In 2023, swimmer Jiang Jiaojiao died saving a drowning child during a seaside team-building activity.
In 1964, Lin Baoni saved a drowning soldier but died from exhaustion in the sea.
Ji...
The holiday is over, Gu Ye has gone back to work, and Bao Ni is home alone with nothing to do.
Bonnie had originally planned to visit her relatives and neighbors, but she didn't have any presentable gifts. She couldn't even cook, let alone make pastries, so she gave up in the end.
After returning from the cafeteria, Bonnie tidied up the house, did the laundry, locked the door, and then strolled around the residential compound.
They have a division of troops stationed on the island, nearly 10,000 men, and the family compound is quite large.
Bonnie stepped out of her house. There were no more houses to the west of her house. Not far away was the canteen, and to the west of the canteen was a wall. Beyond the wall was the training area.
The main gate is on the south side. There are three rows of houses in front of Bonnie's house, and then there are more. The houses for family members of regimental commanders and above are located further back, and they are relatively larger.
The last house was occupied by the division commander, their highest-ranking leader. Their house was the largest, equivalent to a small villa, with a large yard.
Bonnie walked from front to back. In the family quarters, there was a military service center, a clinic, a children's education class, and a small square.
The small square has basketball hoops, parallel bars, ping-pong tables, a sandpit... It may be small, but it has everything you need.
At this time of year, those with jobs have gone to work, and children have gone to school.
Even those who don't have jobs are busy tidying up their homes, fetching water, washing clothes, and doing housework.
In a short while, Bonnie saw several women carrying water, but she didn't recognize any of them and didn't greet them.
There were also some older people who had come to stay with their sons, sitting at the gate of the courtyard, watching over the younger children in their homes.
Throughout her journey, Bonnie's deepest impression was that everyone was struggling. Of the people she met, nine out of ten had patched-up clothes, and while they weren't exactly emaciated, they weren't exactly plump either.
Although the island is large, there isn't much land suitable for growing food. Besides the family compound, there are other groups of people living there.
This is also the main reason why everyone's conditions are not good.
The families in the residential compound and the workers are a little better off, as they receive wages. The fishermen suffer the most. Team One on the island, like Bonnie's, is considered relatively well-off; they used to earn some money through their skills.
Now everything is public property, and you can't fish privately anymore. You might go beachcombing occasionally, but seafood isn't enough to fill your stomach!
Each family has only a small plot of land for their own use, and there aren't enough vegetables to go around.
We've strayed from the topic; the overall environment is not something any one person can change.
Bonnie walked around for a while, got a general idea of the route to the residential compound, and then headed home.
Back home, Bonnie didn't know what to do. As for food, Gu Ye said he wouldn't be back for lunch, and she planned to go to her parents' house for dinner later.
All three rooms in the house were cleaned up, the kitchen was unused, and the bathroom was spotless. The water tank was full, and Bonnie couldn't think of anything else she could do.
After lying down for a while, Bonnie got a little hungry, so she went back to her parents' house to find her grandmother.
Bonnie hopped on her bicycle and left the family compound, arriving at the island's No. 1 team in just a few minutes. At this time of day, apart from people going to work or going to their jobs, there weren't many people on the road.
"Baoni, why are you back?" Grandma asked, puzzled, as she saw her granddaughter pushing the stroller into the yard.
"Gu Ye wasn't coming back for lunch, and I didn't know what to do by myself. I didn't want to go to the cafeteria, so I came back," Bonnie replied listlessly.
"Suddenly you have nothing to do, and you don't know what to do?" Grandma knew that Bonnie had just gotten married and was not used to it yet, and didn't know how to get through the days.
"Yeah, I feel really anxious." Bonnie felt empty, like she had energy but nowhere to use it.
"Grandma knows, it's alright. Come back whenever you have nothing to do these next few days. Or, we could turn over the yard, plant some autumn vegetables, and raise a couple of chicks or something." The old lady offered her granddaughter some advice, hoping to help this lost lamb find its way home.
"Hmm, let me think, I'll go for a walk over to the other side of the mountain this afternoon," Bonnie said after a moment's thought. She was good at everything, from going up mountains to going to the sea.
"Okay, let's see if there are any mushrooms. It's already September." Grandma can't go up the mountain anymore; her old arms and legs are too weak.
At noon, Bonnie and her grandmother prepared lunch together.
Sweet potato and mixed grain rice, stewed fish, stir-fried greens, and mixed pickled vegetables.
Luckily, we're staying on an island. Brother Lin got up early in the morning to go to the beach and caught fish of all sizes. He stewed a whole pot of them, and there was plenty to go around.
After eating, Bonnie went up the mountain with her basket on her back.
There are many mountains on the island, accounting for one-third of the total area. They are not particularly high in altitude, but they are very steep.
Except for the gentler slope at the foot of the mountain, it gets steeper as you go up, and when you reach the highest point, there is a turbulent sea below.
Because of this mountain, their island is much better off, as it can block some of the typhoon attacks.
Bonnie didn't go up to the top of the mountain. She strolled around halfway up the mountain for a while, picked half a basket of mushrooms, gathered a bundle of wild vegetables, and saw a fruit tree with a lot of fruit on it, all of which became Bonnie's spoils.
With fruit at the bottom of her basket, mushrooms on top, and wild vegetables in her hand, Bonnie walked back.
When they reached the foot of the mountain, Bonnie wanted to check out her secret base, but then realized she didn't have any spare clothes and had to give up.
"Grandma, I'm back." Bonnie called out as she entered the door, not seeing her grandma.
"You're back. Do you have any mushrooms?" Grandma Lin asked as she came out of the house.
"Yes, I picked some. I came across a fruit tree and picked half a basket of fruit, which was quite sweet," Bonnie said as she rummaged outside.
"I've prepared some pickled vegetables and fried a salted fish. Take these home for dinner. Also, take some wild vegetables home. Blanch them in water, and when Xiao Gu comes back, just add some seasonings and mix them together—it'll be delicious." Grandma brought over the basket and filled it with some wild fruits and vegetables for Bonnie to take home.
"Okay, Grandma, I'm going back now. Could you keep an eye out for chicks? I'll buy a few. Tomorrow I'll turn over the soil in the yard, and the day after tomorrow Grandma will help me plant them." Bonnie had made her plans. She needed to raise chickens and grow vegetables, so she needed to find something to do first. Her father wouldn't let her go fishing anytime soon.
