In 2023, swimmer Jiang Jiaojiao died saving a drowning child during a seaside team-building activity.
In 1964, Lin Baoni saved a drowning soldier but died from exhaustion in the sea.
Ji...
The typhoon raged all night, and the heavy rain poured down all night as well.
The rain outside lessened a bit the next morning, but it didn't stop.
Bonnie got up and opened the doors and windows to let in some fresh air.
"Mom, the yard is a mess again!" Liu Jiu slept well all night and got up on time, while the others were still sleeping, having been up all night and lacking sleep.
"Alright, let's clean up after the rain stops. Looking at the sky, it'll be afternoon by now. Don't go out yet, it's too slippery outside. Mom will go to the cafeteria to see if they have breakfast." Bonnie went out with an umbrella and a basket.
Han Bei and the others inside the house also woke up. It was their first time experiencing typhoon weather, and they were genuinely a little scared, mainly because the sound of the wind hitting the windows was terrifying, making them feel like the roof was about to be blown off at any moment.
"Liu Jiu, aren't you scared? You slept so soundly last night." Zheng Jun looked at the energetic Liu Jiu and admired him greatly. His friend was truly amazing.
"Don't be afraid, we're used to it. We even encountered a bigger typhoon one year."
Liu Jiu saw that the rain outside was getting lighter and lighter, and everything was fine. It was just that the wind was a bit strong yesterday, and there was a lot of clutter in the yard. Fortunately, he had eaten most of the fruit on the fruit trees beforehand, otherwise, they would have all been blown away!
"The residents on the island have it really tough. A typhoon can destroy many crops, and if the wind is too strong, even houses can be damaged." Gu Xuanyu looked at the broken branches and fallen leaves in the yard and felt deeply moved.
“Not only the residents, but the soldiers in the army also have it tough. When there is a typhoon, there will be places that need disaster relief. Didn’t you check that your uncle hasn’t come back yet?” Zheng Tao knew that at times like this, the soldiers in the army could not stay indoors to avoid the rain; they were destined to rush to various places where they were needed.
"Yeah, my dad's never home when there's a typhoon, we're used to it. Once, the wind shattered the windowpane, it was really scary."
The year 69 left a deep impression on me and remains fresh in my memory.
The children spoke from the heart, but there was not much they could do.
"Everyone's awake, so hurry up and wash up and get ready for dinner."
Bonnie carried the basket into the house and called the children to wash up and eat.
The steamed buns and stewed green beans that the canteen made this morning must be from harvesting all the vegetables from the garden, in case they were blown away by the typhoon.
After dinner, the rain gradually stopped.
Bonnie led the children out to tidy up the yard. In particular, the bamboo sticking up the wall in the middle had been almost completely scraped away.
The rain has stopped, but the sky is still overcast, and I don't know if it will rain again tonight.
Bonnie and the others tidied up quickly, just to get some exercise.
A little while later, it started raining again.
The typhoon brought four or five days of continuous rain, and the house felt like it was going to get moldy.
When the sun came out, the children breathed a sigh of relief; they had been suffering terribly and had developed eczema all over their bodies.
Gu Ye returned on the third day after the weather cleared up, looking unshaven and extremely tired.
Bonnie boiled water and told him to take a hot shower. Then, together with Zheng Jun, they made a pot of hot noodle soup. Zheng Jun was quite a surprise; he was a natural cook.
These past few days, Bonnie and the children have been exchanging a lot of dried seafood on the island to take back for the kids, as their holiday is coming to an end.
"Auntie, we'll come again if we have the chance." Gu Xuanyu was quite reluctant to part with Bao Ni and the others. On the island, they experienced many things they had never experienced before.
"Sure, you're welcome to come anytime during your holidays."
Zheng Jun was also talking to Liu Jiu, "Liu Jiu, are you still going to Beijing for the New Year?"
"I don't know. My dad probably doesn't have any leave this year, so he can't go." Liu Jiu remembered that they went back every few years.
"Oh, I see. Then I'll write you a letter. Remember to write back." Zheng Jun knew that Uncle Gu was very busy and couldn't possibly have time off every year. But Aunt Gu could take Liu Jiu and the others back with her if she was free.
"Okay, I'll try my best to reply. I'm not very good at writing letters." Looking at her friend's expectant eyes, Liu Jiu swallowed her refusal. Maybe he'd already forgotten about it; then she wouldn't need to reply.
The person who changed the most during this trip was Gu Xuanyi. He got a deep tan and became stronger after being dragged to morning exercises by Liu Jiu. Because he was beaten up and Liu Jiu had to protect him, he suddenly felt embarrassed and became much more proactive in his training afterwards.
Gu Ye rested for a day and, together with Han Weidong, escorted several children off the island to reunite with the soldiers returning from visiting their families.
"Thank you for your help, children!" Gu Ye handed the children over to the two soldiers.
"We will take good care of the children, please rest assured, Commander Gu." The two soldiers saluted Gu Ye.
Gu Ye returned the salute, and the two sides completed the handover.
Gu Ye and Han Weidong saw them off on the train and reminded them not to wander off and to listen to their two uncles.
The train departed, taking away the passengers from afar.
When the children returned to the Beijing compound after their long journey, they smelled incredibly sour.
"They're back, they're all back. This smell... go wash up."
Parents waiting to pick up their children were relieved to see their kids return safely and quickly urged them to take a shower because the smell was too strong.
The two soldiers brought the child home safely and then returned to their unit.
Sister-in-law Gu has finished her postpartum confinement period, and her face has become noticeably fuller.
"Go take a shower quickly. I'll call your uncle and tell him you've arrived safely."
"Okay, we're going right now. Even we can't stand the smell."
Gu Xuanyu raised his arm and sniffed it. This smell...
Sister-in-law Gu made a phone call, chatted for a few minutes, and then hung up. She could gossip with Bao Ni, but she really had nothing to talk about with her brother-in-law. Gu Ye was only talkative with Bao Ni and the children; he was very reserved with everyone else.
