"You guys can grow vegetables? That's amazing!"

Xu Yi's younger brother, Xu Yang, looked incredulous. He didn't recognize many kinds of vegetables; he had only ever seen cooked ones and had hardly ever seen any raw ones.

“We grow vegetables every year, it’s a habit. Brother Xu Yi, we’re going to plant vegetables again this afternoon. Today, review what you’ve learned before, and I’ll teach you something new tonight.”

Sanqi opened the door and let them in. The land in their yard was all prepared, just waiting for his mother and sister to come back so they could plant the vegetable seedlings they brought back.

"You grow vegetables in your yard too? My grandma also likes to grow vegetables. We used to grow vegetables in our yard, but they never grew well."

Xu Yi looked at the Gu family's courtyard. He hadn't noticed it before, but today he saw that one side of the courtyard had already been prepared with ridges, one after another, very straight.

“My second aunt loves to grow vegetables. She grows them every year and is an expert at it.”

Gu Xuanyi learned to grow vegetables in the last two years; his family had never grown vegetables before.

None of them went inside; the sun was shining brightly outside, making them feel very comfortable.

Before long, Bonnie and Liu Jiu returned on their tricycle, which was loaded with vegetable seedlings.

"Mom, sister, have some water. I've let it cool down for a while, it's not hot anymore."

As soon as Sanqi saw his mother and sister come in, he quickly brought them two mugs of warm water.

"We're really thirsty." Bonnie and Liu Jiu took the teacups and gulped down half of the water.

Xu Yi watched all this silently. He thought the Gu siblings were amazing. They could cook, do laundry, and clean the table. They knew a lot of things, especially Sanqi. He could always think of details that others would not notice, such as letting his mother and sister cool water.

"Xu Yang is here too. We'll be planting vegetables in a bit, and you can learn from him. It'll be quite interesting."

Bonnie believes that learning should be balanced with relaxation and not too stressful.

Xu Yi has been learning English with Sanqi for over a week now. He's been studying very diligently and earnestly, and Sanqi says he's making rapid progress. The exam is in a little over a month, so he needs to stay calm.

"Great! I've never grown vegetables before."

Xu Yang had come with his brother a few times and had become quite familiar with the Gu family. He was a year older than Sanqi, about the same height, but he was fleshier and more sturdy than Sanqi.

After resting for a while, Bao Ni and Liu Jiu started digging holes, while Xu Yi and Gu Xuanyi poured water into the holes—water that had been specially dried in the sun that morning. San Qi placed the vegetable seedlings into the holes, and after the water seeped in, she covered them with soil.

Xu Yang followed suit and learned to recognize cucumber vines, eggplant vines, tomato vines, pepper vines, strawberry vines...

Many hands make light work. In just over an hour, Bonnie had filled the soil in the front and back yards with plants. There were still some vegetable seedlings left, but there was nowhere else to plant them.

"Second Aunt, it's such a waste that there's nowhere to plant these vegetable seedlings."

Gu Xuanyi looked around but couldn't find a suitable place. There was a shed in the backyard where his second aunt had grown vegetables that were ready to eat.

"There's no space left to plant them, so we've raised a lot of seedlings this year."

Bonnie had originally planned to plant some around the fishpond, but unexpectedly, the flowers from before had sprouted again, so she didn't plant them there.

"Aunt Gu, could you give me those vegetable seedlings? I'd like to plant them at home. My grandma likes to grow vegetables, but she's not very good at it, and only a few plants grow each year."

Looking at the Gu family's vegetable garden, Xu Yi thought he wanted to plant some at home too, and it made him feel really good.

"I'm giving them all to you. Take them home and plant them. You won't need to buy vegetables all summer."

Bonnie went to the backyard and picked a basketful of bok choy, radish sprouts, cilantro, mustard greens, spinach, and scallions from the shed, then brought them over.

"Xu Yi, take these vegetables back and have a taste. They're the first batch this year. You've worked all day, so taste the bounty of the land."

Bonnie loves growing vegetables and enjoys sharing them with others, which makes her feel very happy.

Xu Yi did not refuse and accepted it readily.

"Thank you, Aunt Gu. We're in for a treat. I'll have my grandma fry some egg sauce tonight. Just thinking about it makes my mouth water."

After eating cabbage and potatoes all winter, how could I not be excited to see these lush green vegetables?

Xu Yi, carrying a basket of vegetables, and Xu Yang, carrying half a basket of seedlings, ran home to plant the seedlings as quickly as possible.

In the Xu family's courtyard, Grandma Xu was directing Brigade Commander Xu to turn the soil. She was very confident that she would be able to successfully grow vegetables this year.
