A charming military wife travels back to the 1960s, escaping famine across five provinces before finally reaching the cavalry regiment at the foot of the Qilian Mountains, where she begins her life...
"Smack."
"Smack."
Lu Fangfang took the air gun, quickly loaded it, and fired two more shots.
She only stopped when the marmot was out of sight.
"It's really hard to use."
She knew she would miss her prey the first time she fired a shot, but the lead bullet she fired was just too far from the marmot.
If she had a slingshot, she would have been able to hit that marmot on the first shot.
She took out the lead bullets from her pocket, put them in the gun compartment, and then looked around.
Seeing no other prey, she led the black horse to the marmot mound not far away.
These marmots must be a large group; she spotted the marmot scouts keeping watch on the hillside from a great distance.
"Ah...ah..."
Hearing the marmot's calls, Lu Fangfang stopped and did not go any further.
As the black horse grazed, she raised her air rifle and aimed at the groundhog that had stood upright in the distance.
These creatures graze on wild grass, berries, and moss on the grassland, growing plump and healthy. She estimated that just one of them could yield a large jar of oil.
"Smack."
With a soft thud, the lead bullet disappeared without a trace, and the marmot in the distance was so frightened that it quickly scurried into its burrow.
After a while, in another burrow on the earthen slope, a plump marmot peeked out and peered around.
"Smack."
"Ah...ah..."
The marmot cried out twice in fright, then fell silent.
Lu Fangfang skillfully compressed the air, loaded the lead bullets, and waited for the next marmot she was destined to meet.
These chubby, adorable creatures are timid yet incredibly curious; before long, another one popped out.
"Smack."
"Ah...ah..."
Lu Fangfang sighed and loaded the lead bullets again.
It was still early, and she wasn't in a hurry to go back.
She found a clean rock, plopped down, grabbed her air gun, and blocked the entrance to the groundhog's house, starting a game of whack-a-mole.
"Smack."
"Smack."
"Smack."
"Ah...ah..."
...
After firing half a box of lead bullets, the groundhogs in the distance gradually got used to the sound of the air gun.
One by one, they emerged from the hole, peeking out and looking at Lu Fangfang curiously, not understanding what she was doing.
"Ah...ah..."
"Ah...ah..."
The groundhogs were calling to each other, as if they were discussing something.
Lu Fangfang: "..."
She always felt that these little things were mocking her.
She took out the air gun instruction manual from her pocket and began to study it carefully.
After a while, she understood a little. She estimated the distance between herself and the groundhog and adjusted the scale on the air gun to the "5" position.
She raised her rifle, about to try again, when she saw a Tibetan fox peeking out from behind the swarm of marmots, peering at the marmots at the entrance of their burrow.
Lu Fangfang wanted to laugh as soon as she saw the Tibetan fox's face.
She recognized the Tibetan fox; it was the same one she had seen last time.
Taking a deep breath, Lu Fangfang raised the air rifle and aimed at a groundhog at the entrance of a hole in the distance through the sights.
"Smack."
"Bang!"
With a soft thud, the lead bullet grazed the groundhog's fur and struck the stone.
Lu Fangfang wasn't disappointed even though she didn't hit the groundhog; she felt she was gradually finding the knack for shooting.
In the distance, the groundhogs were startled and all looked toward the stone that had made the sound.
Just then, the Tibetan fox suddenly darted toward the nearest marmot and bit its neck.
"Ah...ah..."
Hearing their companions' screams, the groundhogs were so frightened that they all ran back to their burrows.
As for that unlucky fellow, he was bitten tightly by the Tibetan fox and dragged into the grassland.
Lu Fangfang noticed that the Tibetan fox seemed to glance at her before leaving.
To be honest, if she hadn't attracted the marmots' attention, the Tibetan fox wouldn't have been able to hunt them so easily.
Of course, this was a huge misfortune for the groundhogs.
After waiting a while longer, the groundhogs still didn't come out. It seemed they were really frightened this time.
With her air rifle slung over her shoulder, Lu Fangfang mounted her horse and rode off into the depths of the northern grasslands.
From the family compound, she could see the endless mountain peaks to the north, with snow-capped mountains overhead and forests covering the mountainside. She had been curious about this for a long time, and now that she had the chance, she decided to go and take a look.
This place is truly magical, where snow-capped mountains and forests coexist, and there are grasslands, Gobi deserts, wetlands, and all kinds of terrain. She definitely wants to explore the Qilian Mountains someday.
"Giddy up!"
"Giddy up!"
Lu Fangfang truly experienced the meaning of the saying "looking at the mountain makes the horse run itself to death".
She thought the distance wasn't far, but it took her more than half an hour to reach the foot of the mountain.
Looking up at the mountain, the entire mountainside was covered with a vast expanse of spruce forest, a truly magnificent sight.
"This is the primeval forest of the Qilian Mountains."
Lu Fangfang murmured to herself. Only when she reached the foot of the mountain did she truly appreciate the magnificence of the forest.
After a while, she walked to the edge of the woods and tied the black horse to a small spruce tree.
Looking back, Lu Fangfang could no longer see the family compound; it was already quite far away.
After hesitating for a moment, she turned and walked into the primeval forest.
As soon as you enter the forest, you are surrounded by dense spruce trees, and the light immediately becomes much dimmer.
From time to time, the calls of unknown birds and animals could be heard from all around, and goosebumps rose on Lu Fangfang's arms.
Fortunately, unlike other trees, spruce trees don't grow very straight. There are gaps between the trees, allowing sunlight to shine in.
"I wish this were a pine tree."
