Chapter 76 Old Xu Gives a Gift

Following the path eastward, Lu Fangfang turned south at the fork in the road and walked for another ten minutes or so before arriving at Team Six.

Standing at the village entrance, she glanced around and walked directly towards Xu Huayun's stone courtyard.

It's clear that Old Xu is in a bad situation. The walls of his entire courtyard are made of stone and wooden railings, at most half a meter high, so outsiders can see right into the courtyard and no one can block them.

As for his mud house, it was even more unbearable to look at; it was simply too dilapidated.

The small, broken windows were covered with paper, and the wooden door was made of charred wood, looking as if a gust of wind could blow it over.

Having a place to stay is already pretty good.

Lu Fangfang shook her head. Every time she came here, she would think of Zhu Haiming.

She raised her arm, about to knock, but looking at the dark wooden board, she lowered her hand and called out instead.

"Comrade Xu? Comrade Xu? Are you there?"

"Squeak."

The door was opened, and Xu Huayun, with a melancholy expression, appeared before her.

"Comrade Lu? What brings you here?"

Xu Huayun was quite surprised to see Lu Fangfang.

Since being demoted to the sixth team, this was the first time anyone had come to him except for villagers and people from the farm who came to cause him trouble.

"I came to deliver something to Uncle Guo, and I also wanted to drop by to see you."

Lu Fangfang glanced at the room behind Lao Xu, full of curiosity, "Comrade Lao Xu, would you mind if I came in and sat down?"

"No problem, no problem, Comrade Lu, please come in, please come in quickly."

Xu Huayun quickly opened the wooden door.

Lu Fangfang put down the adobe mold in her hand and walked into the earthen house with curiosity.

The interior was similar in style to the exterior, all dark and dirty.

In the center of the house, there are two dirty wooden pillars supporting the roof.

To the northwest, there was a kang (a heated brick bed), and to the east of the kang was a stove, which was burning and the pot was bubbling.

Upon closer inspection, Lu Fangfang realized that what was being burned was still horse manure.

"I...I'm a bit messy here, Comrade Lu, please have a seat."

Xu Huayun didn't close the door. He quickly walked over, took a wooden stool, and handed it to her.

He picked up the thermos from the ground, poured some water, and said, "Comrade Lu, have some water."

"Old Xu, don't bother. I come from the countryside and I'm not that refined."

Lu Fangfang smiled as she took the teacup and took a sip.

Looking around, she noticed a wooden stool behind the window sill covered with white paper, with several books on it.

Looking at this simple desk, she couldn't help but admire it.

"Glug, glug."

Xu Huayun was a little at a loss. Seeing that the corn porridge he had cooked was done, he quickly took the pot off the stove and poured it into a small earthenware bowl.

The stove in the house had no chimney, so it kept emitting wisps of smoke that were quite choking.

Hearing Lu Fangfang cough a few times, Xu Huayun quickly scooped some water into the pot and put it back on the stove.

"Comrade Lu, have you eaten? I made some porridge..."

"No need, Comrade Xu, don't be so polite. I've already eaten."

Lu Fangfang smiled and waved her hand.

She opened the cloth bag and took out two multigrain steamed buns and a lunchbox of small fish. "I came to deliver the adobe molds to Uncle Guo, and I also brought you some food."

"Comrade Xu, I saw that you liked steamed buns the other day, so I brought you two more. These are small fish that I caught in the river and fried in butter. Try my cooking, don't be disgusted."

Xu Huayun stared at what she was holding in her hand, stunned.

After a long pause, tears welled up in his eyes, and he hurriedly waved his hands, "No, I can't take it, Comrade Lu, I can't take it, I can't take it, sob sob..."

Finally, Xu Huayun couldn't hold back anymore and burst into tears.

With a bleak future ahead, he desperately wanted to end his life.

But looking at what Lu Fangfang was holding and thinking about the villagers' attitude towards him, he couldn't bear to part with it.

"Hey? Comrade Xu, don't cry. It's just some food, it's not worth much, it's not that serious, it's not that serious..."

Lu Fangfang was immediately at a loss.

It's so incongruous to see a burly man, 1.8 meters tall, crying like a child.

Xu Huayun wiped away her tears, turned around and ran out.

"Hey? Comrade Xu? Comrade Xu? Where are you going?"

Fearing he might do something foolish, Lu Fangfang put down what she was holding and quickly chased after him.

She stopped when she saw Xu Huayun running towards the stable.

Upon closer inspection, Lu Fangfang discovered that he was kneeling in the stable, digging something.

After a while, Xu Huayun dug out a large jar and carried it over quickly.

Lu Fangfang looked at him, full of doubt, "Comrade Xu, what's going on?"

"Comrade Lu, I... I don't have anything to give you. These are some local specialties that I dug up when I was herding horses. I dug them up myself. I... I'll give them to you."

Xu Huayun wiped away her tears, her face flushed.

He felt both embarrassed and ashamed that he had cried like this in front of Comrade Lu.

However, thinking back to what he had experienced before, he suddenly felt that it was nothing. Compared to the days when he was despised, losing face was already a good thing.

Xu Huayun forced a smile, then pushed the jar into Lu Fangfang's hands, saying, "Comrade Lu, I'm sorry you had to see this."

After saying that, he scratched his head and quickly went back into the house.

Forehead……

Lu Fangfang looked back at him, then at the jar in her arms, still completely bewildered.

This old Xu comrade... well, he's quite... quite eccentric... cough cough, quite lively.
