Lin Wanqiu breathed a sigh of relief, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and said, "Mother, how are you feeling? Are you still in pain? We'll take you to the hospital right now."
Grandma Shen shook her head and said weakly, "No need, I just had a little to drink and got upset, that's why I'm like this. I'll be fine after a rest." She looked at Lin Wanqiu, a complex emotion flashing in her eyes, a mixture of gratitude and guilt.
Lin Wanqiu knew that Old Madam Shen was strong-willed and unwilling to go to the hospital, but her health condition was not optimistic. She insisted, "Mother, you have acute angina, you can't take it lightly. You must go to the hospital for a detailed examination to find out the cause so that you can get the right treatment. Old Shen, let's take Mother to the county hospital now."
Shen Tingzhou nodded and said firmly, "Mother, listen to Wanqiu, let's go to the hospital now." He picked up Old Madam Shen and walked quickly towards the door.
Lin Wanqiu quickly said to Shen Nian'an and Su Wanqing, "Nian'an, Wanqing, I'll leave this to you. Take good care of the guests. Your father and I will take Grandma to the hospital."
“Mother, don’t worry, we’ll take care of things here,” Shen Nian’an said. “I’ll call you anytime if anything happens.”
Su Wanqing also said, "Auntie, Uncle, be careful on the road. Grandma will be alright."
Lin Wanqiu nodded, picked up the first-aid kit, and quickly followed Shen Tingzhou. The guests watched them leave in a hurry, whispering amongst themselves, their faces showing concern.
"I hope the old man is alright, it was really frightening."
"Wanqiu is such a good daughter-in-law. Although her mother-in-law is not good to her, she still does her best to treat her."
"Old Mrs. Shen is really something. She had to make such a scene at a perfectly good celebration banquet, and now she's suffering herself."
Shen Nian'an and Su Wanqing quickly reassured the guests, saying, "Thank you for your concern. My grandmother seems to be alright; we've already taken her to the hospital. Please continue your meal and don't let this affect your mood."
Seeing that Shen Nian'an and Su Wanqing were so calm, the guests gradually relaxed and continued to eat and chat, but the atmosphere at the scene was much more somber than before.
Shen Tingzhou carried Old Lady Shen and quickly walked towards the Jeep parked at the door. Lin Wanqiu sat in the passenger seat, constantly observing Old Lady Shen's condition, her heart filled with worry. She knew that Old Lady Shen's health had always been poor, with a history of high blood pressure and heart disease. This sudden illness was likely due to emotional distress and excessive drinking. Although she was very dissatisfied with Old Lady Shen's actions, they were still family, and she hoped that Old Lady Shen would be alright.
"Old Shen, drive faster, try to get to the hospital as soon as possible," Lin Wanqiu said, her voice tinged with anxiety.
“I know.” Shen Tingzhou nodded, stepped on the gas, and the jeep sped towards the county town.
Throughout the journey, Old Mrs. Shen leaned against Shen Tingzhou's chest, her eyes closed, her face still somewhat pale. She coughed occasionally, and her breathing was a little rapid. Lin Wanqiu kept wiping the sweat from her forehead, gently comforting her, "Mother, hang in there a little longer, we'll be at the hospital soon, and everything will be alright once we get there."
Grandma Shen didn't speak, only nodded slightly. Her heart was filled with regret and guilt. She regretted causing trouble at Nianxi's victory celebration banquet, and regretted being so harsh on Lin Wanqiu. If it weren't for her willfulness and selfishness, she wouldn't have triggered her heart condition and worried everyone.
The jeep sped along and soon arrived at the county hospital. Shen Tingzhou carried Grandma Shen and rushed into the emergency room. The doctor immediately conducted a thorough examination and diagnosed Grandma Shen with an acute myocardial infarction. Her condition was extremely critical, and she needed immediate surgery.
"Doctor, please, you must save my mother!" Shen Tingzhou gripped the doctor's hand tightly, his eyes filled with pleading.
"Don't worry, we'll do our best," the doctor said. "Now we need a family member's signature, and we'll prepare for surgery immediately."
Lin Wanqiu immediately signed the surgical consent form. Watching Old Lady Shen being wheeled into the operating room, both Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu felt a heavy weight in their hearts. They waited anxiously outside the operating room, silently praying that Old Lady Shen would pull through.
Time ticked by, the operating room light remaining on. Shen Tingzhou paced back and forth, his face filled with anxiety. Lin Wanqiu sat in a chair, her hands clenched tightly, her heart pounding with unease. She recalled all the hardships Shen Laotai had endured for her, her harshness towards Nian An, and her greed for the spatial resources—a complex mix of emotions welled up within her. But at this moment, none of that mattered; she only hoped that Shen Laotai would be safe and sound.
After what seemed like an eternity, the operating room lights finally went out. The doctor emerged, removed his mask, and said, "The surgery was successful, and the patient is out of danger. However, her condition is quite serious, and she will need to be observed in the intensive care unit for a few days, followed by long-term treatment and care."
Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu finally breathed a sigh of relief. They exchanged a glance, both seeing relief in each other's eyes. "Thank you, doctor, thank you so much!" Shen Tingzhou said quickly.
"You're welcome, it's what we should do," the doctor said. "The patient is still very weak. You can go in and see her, but don't stay too long."
Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu entered the intensive care unit and looked at Old Mrs. Shen lying on the hospital bed. She was covered in tubes, her face still pale, but her breathing had become much more stable. Old Mrs. Shen slowly opened her eyes, saw Shen Tingzhou and Lin Wanqiu, and a tear welled up in her eyes. She weakly said, "Tingzhou, Wanqiu, thank you..."
"Mother, don't speak, just rest." Shen Tingzhou held her hand, his voice choked with emotion. "From now on, you must take good care of your health and not be willful anymore."
