Lin Wanqiu had just coaxed Shen Nian'an to sleep when her fingertips accidentally touched the jade pendant around her neck, a warm sensation spreading from her fingertips. A thought struck her—since activating the space, this jade pendant had only shown a faint reaction when she needed resources, but today the reaction was unusually strong. Could it be that there had been a new change?
She gently tucked Nian'an in, and using the moonlight filtering through the window, closed her eyes and focused her mind. When she opened her eyes again, the familiar white mist had dissipated, and the space before her was brighter than usual. In the open space by the warehouse entrance, a silver-gray box had appeared out of nowhere, the red cross printed on it particularly conspicuous under the light—it was a first-aid kit!
Lin Wanqiu strode over, and the box popped open automatically the moment her fingertips touched the lid. Inside, the items were neatly arranged: iodine and alcohol wipes for disinfection, gauze and bandages for bandaging, several boxes of common cold and fever medications, and even a thermometer and tweezers. Most thoughtfully, a "Basic Medical Handbook" was tucked at the bottom of the box, its cover bearing the bold words "Beginner-friendly, richly illustrated."
"This space really understands me!" Lin Wanqiu couldn't help but laugh as she flipped through the manual. A few days ago, Nian'an had a fever, and she could only rely on the herbs in the space to make herbal decoctions. She didn't even have a thermometer and could only estimate the temperature by touching her forehead. Now that she has this medical kit, she and her daughter won't have to panic if they have a headache or fever in the future.
Following the steps in the manual, she first picked up iodine and cotton swabs to simulate disinfecting the wound. When dipping the cotton swabs in iodine, she paid special attention to the amount used—the manual said not to use too much iodine, otherwise it would irritate the wound. Next, she picked up gauze and tried to bandage the "wound." Her fingers were a little clumsy when wrapping it, and it took her several tries to secure it. Finally, when she tried to fasten it with tape, she accidentally got some of her own hair stuck to it, making her wince in pain.
"Looks like bandaging is a skill in itself." Lin Wanqiu rubbed her arm and flipped to the "Common External Injury Treatment" section of the manual. It contained clear diagrams, showing how to clean abrasions, how to stop bleeding from cuts, and even how to apply cold compresses to sprains. She became increasingly engrossed in reading until she heard Nian An's murmurs coming from the inner room, at which point she remembered she should go out.
Just as they exited the spatial dimension, they heard hurried footsteps outside the courtyard gate, mixed with a woman's cries: "Wanqiu! Is Wanqiu home? Please go and see her quickly, something has happened to Zhuzi!"
Lin Wanqiu's heart tightened; the voice belonged to Aunt Li from next door. Zhu Zi was Aunt Li's youngest son, only six years old, and he always loved to follow Nian An around. She quickly put on her clothes, opened the door, and saw Aunt Li holding Zhu Zi, her face covered in tears. Zhu Zi's trouser legs were covered in blood, and his face was as white as paper.
"What happened?" Lin Wanqiu quickly ushered Aunt Li into the house and placed Zhuzi on the kang (a heated brick bed). She lifted Zhuzi's trouser leg and saw a two-finger-wide wound on his calf, with dirt still clinging to the edges and blood still flowing intermittently.
"Zhu Zi was fishing by the river when he accidentally cut himself on a rock!" Aunt Li sobbed, "I wanted to take him to the commune clinic, but it's the middle of the night and the roads are dark. I'm too scared to walk. Wan Qiu, I know you know a little about medicine, please save Zhu Zi!"
Lin Wanqiu looked at the wound and quickly calculated in her mind: the wound was quite deep, she needed to disinfect and stop the bleeding first, otherwise it might get infected. She remembered the medical kit in her space, gritted her teeth—saving people was the priority now, she couldn't worry about exposing her space for the time being.
"Aunt Li, don't panic, I'll treat Zhu Zi's wound right away." Lin Wanqiu had Aunt Li hold down Zhu Zi's leg, and then she made an excuse to go to the kitchen to get something, and quietly entered her spatial dimension. She quickly took out iodine, gauze, and hemostatic powder, and put the medical manual in her pocket—just in case she forgot the steps later, she could secretly glance at it.
Back inside, she first handed the alcohol swabs to Aunt Li: "Aunt Li, please hold down Zhuzi's knee to keep him from moving. I'll use the alcohol swabs to clean the mud around the wound."
When the alcohol swab touched the wound, Zhu Zi cried out in pain and struggled to push Lin Wanqiu away. Aunt Li hugged him tightly and said, choking back tears, "Zhu Zi, be good, bear with it, it won't hurt anymore once it's clean."
Lin Wanqiu moved more gently, wiping the wound while coaxing, "Zhuzi is a man, he's not afraid of pain, right? After the wound is treated, I'll get you some candy." She remembered that there were fruit candies in her space, and she would take out two later, which would surely appease the child.
After cleaning the wound, Lin Wanqiu disinfected it with iodine. This time, although Zhu Zi was still crying, he didn't struggle much anymore, only tightly clutching Aunt Li's clothes. After disinfecting, she sprinkled some hemostatic powder on the wound, and the bleeding stopped quickly. Finally, she bandaged the wound with gauze, wrapping it twice around his calf, and then secured it with tape.
"Alright, the wound has been treated." Lin Wanqiu breathed a sigh of relief, took out two fruit candies from her pocket, and handed them to Zhu Zi. "Look, this is a reward for you. A real man should be this brave."
Zhu Zi took the candy, tears still on his face, but he had stopped crying and whispered, "Thank you, Aunt Wanqiu."
Looking at the neatly bandaged wound and then at the fruit candy in her hand, Aunt Li's eyes reddened again: "Wanqiu, thank you so much. This candy is so precious these days, and you still gave it to him. And this medicine of yours, it must be expensive, right? Name your price, and I'll bring you the money tomorrow."
"Aunt Li, what are you saying?" Lin Wanqiu waved her hand. "We're neighbors, it's only right to help each other out. Besides, this medicine isn't anything expensive. It was sent to me by my family before, and it's just sitting there. Don't mention the money, or I'll get upset."
Aunt Li knew Lin Wanqiu's temperament, so she didn't insist anymore. She just held Lin Wanqiu's hand tightly and said, "Wanqiu, you are such a good person. If you ever need anything in the future, just tell me. I will definitely help if I can."
