A Guide to Raising Younglings During Natural Disasters

Natural disasters were incessant. Ning Xia had survived alone for six years and finally decided to return to her old home in Qianzhou to start anew. Unexpectedly, she rescued two skinny little ones...

Chapter 11 An unexpected surprise

As soon as the sky brightened, Ningxia opened her eyes. Her eyes were clear, without the tiredness of just waking up. She hadn't had a full sleep for a long time. Ningxia stretched comfortably, forgetting that the bed was too narrow, and kicked Lin Yi.

"Are you awake? You have to get up. There are a lot of things to do today." Looking at Lin Yi's tired and confused eyes, Ning Xia spoke calmly without blushing at all.

"Oh." Lin Yi rubbed his eyes. He couldn't figure out what he was busy with for the time being. He turned over and got out of bed quickly, not forgetting to cover Sangsang with a blanket.

The wind from the mountains in the early morning was gentle. Ningxia stood at the door of the wooden house and took a few breaths of the sweet air, which dispelled a lot of the coldness on her body.

There was a small pile of firewood under the eaves, which should be enough for breakfast this morning. The stove had already cooled down. Ningxia lit the fire, handed the task of cooking to Lin Yi, and planned to walk around with the knife.

The riverbed in the valley might have dried up, and there were no traces of animals, which made Ningxia breathe a sigh of relief. She walked to the crevice where water came from yesterday and found that the water flow had become smaller. Looking from this end, she could vaguely see shimmering waves not far away. It seemed that it was late yesterday, so she did not realize that the water source was not far ahead.

Heyuan was not far away, which made Ningxia happy. She returned to the wooden house, pulled Sangsang up, and applied medicated oil to her again. The affected area did not show any obvious improvement, but fortunately it did not get worse either.

After a quick breakfast, the three of them grabbed Sangsang's makeshift mount, Maomao, and headed out to the water. Ningxia had even packed a lot of clothes; the family was truly filthy.

The weather was very cool in the morning, and the two men were full of energy after a night's rest. In less than an hour, the river in the distance came into view. It was more like a large pool of water than a river.

The pool was surrounded by a dry riverbed in an irregular circle, leaving only a pool with a diameter of about three meters in the center. Before approaching the pool, Ningxia was a little frightened by the scene in front of him.

There were many dead fish on the dry riverbed, on the surrounding rocks, and in the cracks between the rocks! The closer you got to the riverbed, the more dead fish there were. Ningxia's first reaction was that there was a problem with the water source.

She suppressed her worries and walked closer to take a closer look. The pool was densely packed with fish, and it was impossible to estimate how deep the water was. Before Ningxia had time to be happy, goose bumps appeared all over her body.

Most of the fish inside were taller than her upper arms, and they were fat and densely packed together in a black mass.

There were a few half-dead fish by the water, breathing hard with their gills puffed out. Ningxia thought for a moment and kicked them back into the pool. They rolled their fat bodies a few times without splashing much water. After a few strong swings, they swam back to the school of fish and could no longer be distinguished.

Ningxia breathed a sigh of relief, followed by uncontrollable joy. So many fish, such a precious resource. She has always been a free and easy person, rarely worrying about unknown things. But since she brought the brother and sister with her, the food reserves were dwindling, and Ningxia felt anxious for the first time. The fish in the pond undoubtedly alleviated her anxiety very well.

“Fish! Fish!!” Sangsang shouted excitedly beside the pond. Lin Yi beside him couldn’t hide his joy, “Sister Xia Xia… so many fish…”

There were still many live fish stranded by the pond. Ningxia followed the same method and kicked them back into the water one by one. Lin Yi, who was standing by, followed suit and helped.

Sangsang grabbed the long hair beside Maomao's ears and carefully slid off Maomao, staring at the two of them with bright eyes. Only when the last fish returned to the water did Sangsang cheer happily again, reaching out to cover his mouth which was not covered, and laughing happily.

Ningxia nodded at Sangsang and instructed her, "Sangsang, your brother and I are going to go fishing. Your foot is injured, so can you just sit by and help us watch over the fish we catch?"

Sangsang nodded excitedly and retracted her little foot that was about to step forward.

"Lin Yi, roll up your trouser legs to your thighs, hold my hand, and let's go down together. Once you're down, don't move. I'll grab it and hand it to you, and you throw it on the stone slab next to Sangsang."

"Okay!" Lin Yi rubbed his hands together, and his excitement was not much better than Sangsang's.

There were a lot of fish at the bottom of the pond. Ningxia could catch one of them at a time. They were fat, plump and shiny black. Occasionally, Ningxia would not want a smaller fish and would throw it back into the pond, only catching the biggest ones. Lin Yi would stand in the shallow water at the edge of the pond to catch them. In an hour, more than a dozen big fish were jumping around on the stone slab next to Sangsang. The first few that went up were already dying.

Sangsang on the side also squatted down and looked at the fish carefully. If anyone was so foolish as to try to run away, Sangsang would grab the tail and drag him back, muttering to herself. She was not afraid of these things at all.

"It's almost done, Lin Yi, let's go up first."

Lin Yi looked at the many fish in the pond and felt reluctant to leave, but he still took the big hand Ningxia handed over and went ashore.

"Xia Xia, there are so many fish!" Sangsang rushed over excitedly. Her clothes were not much cleaner than the two people who had gone into the river. Ningxia didn't care and just hugged her. "Yes, there are so many fish. Let's prepare them and take them back. I'll make you something delicious."

Sangsang's expression was ferocious as if he had been constipated for two years. "Kill them all!" Ningxia was so amused that she couldn't help but smile. Lin Yi on the side also had a smile on his face, looking straight at Sangsang. It had been a long time since he had seen such an energetic Sangsang.

The ground was covered with a small area of spoils. Ningxia deliberately took it to a place far away from the pond to deal with it. Although this pond was full of running water, several people would rely on it for water in the future, so it would be best not to dirty it if possible.
