A Guide to Raising Younglings During Natural Disasters

Natural disasters were incessant. Ning Xia had survived alone for six years and finally decided to return to her old home in Qianzhou to start anew. Unexpectedly, she rescued two skinny little ones...

Chapter 123: Harvest

"Taking Meeme out to play again?" Ningxia glanced at the lamb in Sangsang's hand.

The little girl either played with Qingtian or with Maomao, and the three chicks raised in the yard often fell victim to her harm.

At worst, she would rather hang out with this little lamb she named Mee Mee than learn a single extra word.

"Oh, Meimee said she's hungry," Sangsang shook the rope, "I'll come back to study after I've fed her!"

"I don't even want to talk to you. You forgot the three words you learned the day before yesterday, and you forgot the words you learned the day before yesterday! And you still think about going out to play all day. It's been so long since you learned pinyin, but you haven't even learned ten words!!"

Sangsang froze in place, his head down, his mouth curled up, playing with the knot in his hand. Meimei seemed confused as to why he had stopped, and bleated several times in succession.

"Still standing there? Go back and study!"

Sangsang was not afraid at all. He looked up at Ningxia and, after confirming that there was no room for negotiation, he said "Oh" in an extremely unhappy tone and walked back with Meimee by his hand.

Ningxia was almost biting her teeth, she didn't expect her child to achieve anything in school.

But for someone like Sangsang, who only learned the extremely simple numbers from one to ten in half a month and often made mistakes, this is too much.

Moreover, Ningxia had ignored her for the past half month, and she had obviously become thicker-skinned. She didn't take it to heart at all even if someone yelled at her loudly.

This only proves one thing: a child won't grow up without being beaten. She has to plan to give her a good beating one day so she'll behave herself. Otherwise, she'll always think she's just talking big but not delivering, and won't have any authority at all.

"Where's Sangsang? Is he playing in the woods with Meeme again?" Ningxia was packing up the farm tools. The cabbages, tomatoes and radishes in the fields could be harvested. She and Lin Yi would be busy for several days.

"No, she's in the woods, digging worms for the chickens."

"Take her with you to the fields."

"Okay, I'll go call her."

During this period, Lin Yi took Sangsang to take care of the fields. Ningxia hadn't visited for several days. Calculating that it was time for the crops to be harvested, she decided to pack up and go home.

"Wow! Big tomatoes!"

Lin Yi glanced at her and said, "Don't you come here every day? Why are you acting like it's your first time?"

Sangsang grinned, "Because Xia Xia doesn't know! I was telling her so she could hear it."

Ningxia raised her lips and said, "Thank you so much. The last time I came to see you, you were already mature, just not as red as you are now."

A small corner was filled with red tomatoes the size of an adult's fist. Many of the tomato branches were directly broken in the ground. It was unknown how long it had been, and a large part of the branches had dried up.

This thing can't be kept for long, and not much is grown in Ningxia. It is mainly used to improve the diet of the two children.

"I'll leave the tomatoes to you, okay?"

Sangsang nodded without hesitation.

Ningxia went to the other side and pulled out a radish, which must have weighed two or three pounds. She peeled off the skin with a knife and it was sweet!

"Sister Xia Xia, am I chopping cabbage?"

"Come and help me pick the radishes. Let's pick the tomatoes and radishes first. Once we get home and process them, we can pick the cabbages."

They planted quite a lot of Chinese cabbage, and the harvest would have been about two or three hundred kilograms. There was no time to clean it up.

The three of them were immersed in the joy of the harvest, and Maomao was even happier than them. All the old radishes fell into his mouth, and each bite was crisp and juicy, which made him very happy.

After a busy day, the tomatoes were almost all picked, but there were still some radishes left. Ningxia looked at the harvest in the yard with a sincere smile, saying, "Great, a good harvest!"

"You two just stay home and wash the radishes. I'll go to your aunt's house and get two jars. We'll make kimchi."

Ningxia went out carrying two big radishes and a dozen red tomatoes.

"Why are you here?"

Liu Ximu and Mu Yuanqing were both collecting herbs in the yard when they saw Ningxia coming from afar.

"I'll bring you some food." It was sunny, and since she couldn't sit still, she must be sleeping.

"Come on, what's the matter? Tell me."

"Hey, I came to you to get two shrinking jars that the master used to store medicine for making kimchi."

Mu Yuanqing then took the thing from her hand and said, "You're pointing at the good ones, why don't you take them?"

The jars they use to store medicine at home are made in large quantities by someone else. They are white, translucent, and collapsible jars. When they are opened, they become three-dimensional jars, and when they are flattened, they are easy to store.

Liu Ximu's herbs are very light after being prepared, so using jars like this is very convenient for temporary storage. They have a lot of them at home.

"I'm not asking for it for nothing. I'll make some kimchi and bring you two jars. It's so delicious with a bowl of hot porridge when it's cold."

"Then I'll wait. How much?"

"Three of the ten-jin (10-pound) ones, ten of the five-jin (5-pound) ones."

"You want to sell it? So much?"

"Do you have to send two cans to the sentry post as well? I'll exchange them for fresh fish to nourish your sunny day." Ningxia grinned.

"Okay! You're welcome. Take it away."

"What are you doing with the eggs?"

Mu Yuanqing rolled his eyes at her and said, "You've already harvested the tomatoes, so shouldn't you make some scrambled eggs with tomatoes for the kids?"

"No, save it for Qingtian. She can't eat much anyway."

"Take it. There are still a lot of them at home. I have exchanged a lot of them, and I can't keep them anymore."

Ningxia then accepted the ten white and tender eggs, but she didn't know when the three cubs at home would allow her to be egg-free.

That night, the three siblings all had rice with scrambled eggs and tomatoes, and Ningxia added some sugar for flavoring.

Sangsang said that he had never eaten anything so delicious before and he wanted to pick up the plate and lick it.

"Okay, who are you cooking for? You've already eaten a lot. I'll make it for you next time. I don't have any for today."

Sangsang giggled and put down the plate in her hand reluctantly.

"Lin Yi, don't share any with her. If she eats too much, she will feel uncomfortable at night." After giving the instructions, Ningxia got up and went to wash the radishes.

Lin Yi avoided Sangsang's gaze. He had more food than the other two. There was no other way. He wouldn't be full without it, so Ningxia always gave him more when she cooked.

He picked up the plate and dug into his mouth. In a few seconds, half of the food was in his mouth. He picked up the plate and shook it towards Sangsang to indicate that it was gone.

"Hmph!" Sangsang turned his face away and got off the bench angrily, determined not to play with his brother anymore!

"Sister Xia Xia, is it enough to wash these?" Lin Yi looked at the pot of radishes on the stove.

Ningxia nodded. "Well, make a big can of spicy food for the two of us. Make a small can of sweet and sour food for Sangsang. And send a small can of spicy food to your aunt Qing and Uncle Lao Hu and his family. These are almost enough."

Lin Yi nodded, washed the dishes, and then helped Ningxia cut the radish into cubes.

Ningxia's kimchi-making skills are unique, especially the spicy cabbage. When he was at the Shuguang base, Mo Guanshan could eat three bowls of spicy cabbage in one go.

Ningxia was a little dazed when she suddenly thought of someone she had forgotten for a long time. Then she smiled and thought that living a good life was the real thing.
