Natural disasters were incessant. Ning Xia had survived alone for six years and finally decided to return to her old home in Qianzhou to start anew. Unexpectedly, she rescued two skinny little ones...
Lin Yi was woken up by Sang Sang. The little girl was lying in bed, unwilling to even sit up, with her eyes closed, yelling that she needed to pee. When Lin Yi helped Old Lady Sang up, Ning Xia was bent over with her back to the bed, looking down, and no one knew what she was doing.
Ningxia heard the noise without even turning her head, "Don't sleep if you're awake. Clean up and drink the porridge in the pot. Take care of Sangsang. My hands are not idle." She was going to call him if he didn't wake up. It had been almost twelve hours since eight o'clock last night.
Lin Yi took Sang Sang back after solving his personal problems and found Ning Xia holding a "shoe" with vines on it. He didn't know what she was doing. When he saw the size of the shoe, he realized that it was made for him, "Sister Xia Xia..."
Ningxia looked up and saw Lin Yi staring intently at the semi-finished product in his hand. "I made this for you. I'll make some for Sangsang later. Let's go have some porridge first."
The shoes she had on hand didn't have the right size, and the child had been wearing a pair of sandals with broken soles, and the soles of his feet were covered with thick calluses.
When she couldn't wear shoes before, she learned how to wear them from an old man at the base. It wasn't exactly comfortable, but it was definitely better than being barefoot. Later, when she had enough money, she bought two pairs of boots and finally said goodbye to those straw sandals.
The soles of the shoes were woven from a new species of resilient vine called the reed. Maomao's luggage bag was woven from this very vine. Ningxia had seen quite a bit of it while out and about that morning, and that's when she came up with the idea of making shoes for them.
She also picked up the bedding that was thrown away yesterday, cut several pieces of cloth from it, and took out a small pile of cotton wool inside. She planned to wash and dry the cotton wool and cloth, and put the cotton wool inside and outside the shoes to make them into cloth. This way, the shoes would not be so stiff. Even though the cotton wool was worn out, it was still no problem to wear on the feet.
Sangsang did the same thing. When the two children came over after breakfast, Ningxia had almost finished making the soles. She waited for the cotton and cloth to dry before sewing them on and weaving the uppers. It was quick and could be done in a short while.
When Ningxia stood up, she took a look at the pot. It was spotless. These two little ones were really good eaters. Although the milk pot was not big, it still had some capacity to hold some soup. Every time she cooked a full pot, unless she was extremely hungry, she would only eat less than one-third of it and the two little ones would eat up the rest.
"Are you full?" Ningxia couldn't help but ask as she looked at the clean pot.
"I'm full."
"I'm full too. The fish smells good! It's delicious!"
When his eyes fell on the two round bellies, Ningxia believed it for the time being.
"Let's not go fishing today. Let's go to the pond to wash the dirty clothes. We'll take a walk around in the afternoon." Ningxia said as he gathered the piled up dirty clothes.
"Xia Xia, why don't you catch any fish?" Sangsang didn't quite understand. There were so many fish in the water, and they hadn't caught half of them. Why didn't they catch any more?
"Why, didn't you catch enough yesterday?"
"There's never enough food."
Ningxia couldn't believe Sangsang would actually use the word 'forever'. She squatted down and looked directly at her. "Of course we have to catch more. Once the water dries up, all the fish will be dead too. What a waste. But we killed so many fish yesterday and we're exhausted. Let's take a break and wait for the fish fillets drying on the stone slabs to dry before we catch more."
Sangsang nodded and smiled at Ningxia. No matter how many times, Ningxia could not help but be moved by the purity and sincerity in her eyes.
Several people came to the edge of the pond. Not far away, the rugged rocks at the foot of the mountain formed a large empty stone slab, and there was a towering mountain directly above it. The three people had flushed it yesterday, and the fish fillets were hanging inside and spread all over the ground. Ningxia roughly counted it yesterday and found that there were about twenty fish.
This location allows you to feel the wind but it's not too strong, and you don't have to worry about the fish fillets being blown away. Even the small open space on the outside that can get sun exposure has been covered with honeysuckle by the hardworking Lin Yi.
Honeysuckle tea has a hint of sweetness and fragrance, and is slightly astringent. Lin Yi and Sangsang have completely accepted this taste.
The fish fillets were still a little moist, so Ningxia turned them over with her two children before going out to wash clothes. There were not many soapberries left, and Ningxia planned to save them for washing her hair, so she could only crush the soapberry leaves and use them to wash clothes. She didn't require them to be clean, as long as they could remove the odor.
"Xia Xia, look, it's clean!"
Ningxia looked up at the still dirty clothes in Sangsang's hand. She couldn't say anything against her will, so she could only follow Sangsang's example, holding out her teeth and standing at attention as a perfunctory gesture.
In just two days, Sangsang's spirits improved a lot. Unlike before when he was on the road, the two children were lively and energetic. The stone that had been weighing on Ningxia's heart finally eased.
"Sangsang! Come here and look!" Ningxia found a not-so-tall cherry tree in the forest. After washing the clothes and drying them in a random place, the three of them headed straight for the mountain on the right side of the valley.
Sangsang stood under the tree, looking up at the orange-red fruits rustling on the tree. The sunlight and the shadows of the trees overlapped and gently fell on her innocent little face. "Wow~ Ground berries, growing on the tree~"
Ningxia laughed at his silly look, "These are cherries, not groundberries." Cherries should be ripe at this time of year, but there are only a few left on the trees.
Ningxia casually kicked away the leaves under his feet and found that the ground was covered with red, ripe cherries, most of which were rotten. No wonder he could smell a strong smell of rotten and fermented fruit when standing under the tree.
"Let me do it." Lin Yi called Ningxia who was about to climb up. Ningxia saw that the tree was not very tall, so he let him go.
Most of the fruits that Lin Yi brought down were orange-red, with very few bright red ones, and some had traces of being pecked. It seemed that these little creatures in the sky also knew how to pick the good ones.
