A Guide to Raising Younglings During Natural Disasters

Natural disasters were incessant. Ning Xia had survived alone for six years and finally decided to return to her old home in Qianzhou to start anew. Unexpectedly, she rescued two skinny little ones...

Chapter 14: Picnic

So, at the Shuguang base, every year to stockpile food, a large number of people would go to the mountains to find various wild products and vegetables, dry them for storage, and hunt. They would only grow easy-to-raise crops like potatoes, wheat, and corn.

There is a soybean field, but it is grown for oil extraction. Ordinary people cannot eat it. They all eat whole-grain cakes and meat from hunting. Only when it is the coldest will the base distribute some broth. It is not so much broth as it is the water used to wash the fried meat for the people above.

"Sister Xia Xia, what is this?"

Lin Yi's voice interrupted Ningxia's recollection of the bitterness and sweetness. She took the leaf handed to her by Lin Yi and saw that it was wild garlic. She looked carefully at the field in front of her and found that it was a small field of mature wild garlic!

"It's garlic!" Ningxia went forward and dug out a piece. After clearing the dirt, a tender white garlic bulb was exposed. Wild garlic was completely different from the ones I grew myself. The ones I grew myself had several cloves tightly wrapped together, like an unopened lotus flower, and the leaves were also relatively large. Wild garlic was a small, white bulb. Although the leaves were small, they had a strong fragrance.

"It looks like onion to me." Lin Yi touched his head. He didn't dare to confirm it when he saw it. If it was an onion, the leaves would be flat and some would even have flowers. Onions don't have flowers.

"This is wild garlic, different from the ones I bought before. It's normal that you don't recognize it. Pick all of this and take it back!" Ningxia waved his hand, intending to collect them all. Wild garlic is perfect for pairing with fish to remove the fishy smell and enhance the flavor!

The three men did not even spare the smaller seedlings and picked them all. The small piece of land was like a swarm of locusts, with no grass growing.

Ningxia looked at the leaves and fruits in his hand, which weighed about three or four pounds, and smiled with satisfaction.

It was almost one o'clock in the afternoon, and seeing that it was almost time for them to go out for exercise, Ningxia took the two children down the mountain to cook and eat.

"Xia Xia, where are you going?" Sangsang looked at Ningxia packing her things in confusion. Ningxia packed a bunch of chili peppers, the wild onions left over from this morning, and a lot of wild garlic she had just picked into her bag.

"Let's go to the pond and grill some fish."

Lin Yi's eyes lit up, but Sangsang still didn't understand. Ningxia took Lin Yi to pack up and set off.

"Lin Yi, go collect firewood, I'll take care of the fish. Sangsang, don't run around. Go to the hole in the stone slab and turn the fish fillets over." After Ningxia gave the instructions, he rolled up his trouser legs and went into the water.

At this moment, nearly one-third of the fish in the pond had disappeared. Ningxia picked out two relatively large fish with small bones, and caught a boneless fish for Sangsang and threw it in, and then slowly came up.

While she was catching fish, Lin Yi had already come back with a pile of firewood of different sizes. Sangsang followed him and took two wooden sticks, muttering to herself as she walked.

"Sangsang! Have you finished flipping the fish fillets?"

The little head drooped heavily. Lin Yi immediately understood what was going on and quickly responded, "I'll go right away."

"I was just teasing her. Why would she need to turn over so frequently after just turning over the pages this morning? I was just worried she'd run around, so I wanted to give her something to do."

"No, running around, pick up my brother." Sangsang retorted in a low voice.

"Okay! I'm not running around, but Sangsang, you must remember to tell me or your brother no matter where you go, okay?"

Sangsang nodded obediently.

"Lin Yi, go pick some more leaves and release the fish."

Lin Yi turned around obediently. When he was about to leave, he looked back and saw Sangsang's expectant eyes. "Sister Xia Xia, can I take Sangsang with me? She's right there." After saying that, he raised his finger.

Ningxia saw that they were not far away. She spoke loudly enough for them to hear her. She found the two children's anxious and expectant expressions very amusing and said, "Go ahead."

Sangsang happily took her brother's hand and left, while Ningxia stayed there to kill the fish.

After killing and cleaning the fish quickly, Ningxia also cleaned herself casually. She was very careful when killing the fish and tried not to get any stains on her clothes.

Lin Yi squatted beside Sangsang and washed the leaves they brought back. Ningxia took out the ingredients they brought and marinated Sangsang's fish first.

She coated the fish inside and out with a thin layer of salt, then stuffed a handful of wild garlic and wild onions, as well as a few chopped perilla leaves, into the fish's belly. She then used a sharpened perilla stalk to close the fish's belly and wrapped the whole fish tightly with the leaves.

Lin Yi and she ate the same way, the only difference was that she ground chili peppers and mixed them with salt and rubbed them all over the fish. She and Lin Yi both loved spicy food, and Lin Yi's eyes lit up when he saw her rubbing the chili peppers.

"Xia Xia, why are you carving wood?" Sangsang looked at Ningxia in confusion as she carved one side of a piece of wood into a sharp point.

"Fish on a stick."

When the disaster came, Sangsang was only two years old and was forced to be weaned. She obviously didn't understand this kind of eating behavior.

After the fire was lit, Ningxia dug up the stones on the ground at both ends to expose the moist soil, and inserted a "fork" on each side so that he could put the fish on it to roast without having to hold it with his hands.

The fire burned for a while. Seeing that Ningxia did not make any other moves, Lin Yi was curious, "Sister Xia Xia, aren't you going to roast it?"

"Wait until these larger pieces of firewood are burned out before you roast them."

"Why?"

Lin Yi was a rare talker, so Ningxia patiently explained, "Because grilling the fish directly over fire will burn it, so we'll take out the wood and grill it over the charcoal on the ground, and the fish won't get burnt."

These were experiences accumulated through blood and tears. Once, Mo Guanshan caught two tits with extremely tender meat and asked her to roast them. She took them and started roasting them. When Mo Guanshan came back, the two tits he had caught with great effort had turned into charcoal. When she peeled off the outermost shell, the meat inside was still bright red.

Thinking of Mo Guanshan's helpless twitching mouth corners, Ningxia lowered her head and raised the corners of her mouth.
