Natural disasters were incessant. Ning Xia had survived alone for six years and finally decided to return to her old home in Qianzhou to start anew. Unexpectedly, she rescued two skinny little ones...
"Xia Xia! You're back!" Sangsang put down the bowl in his hand and went to greet her.
Lin Yi also stood up and said, "Sister Xia Xia, I left some food for you." Lin Yi brought over the plate with a bowl on top of it from the table beside the bed.
At this time, the two children had been washed and changed into clean clothes, leaving Ningxia alone, still smelling bad.
Ningxia put down the bag in her hand, put the kettle on the table, and took the plate handed to her by Lin Yi, "Why didn't you go out to eat?" When she came back, she heard the loud gongs and drums outside, which was very lively.
"Uncle Jun got a bottle of wine, and they wanted to sing a drinking song. They didn't want to scare Sangsang, so they asked me to take Sangsang back to the room to eat."
Ningxia suddenly realized that drinking songs were a traditional part of the Monan dinner table. Even from the room, she could hear the men outside singing louder and louder. No wonder she was afraid of scaring Sangsang; she was a little frightened.
Ningxia looked at the food on the plate: stir-fried green beans, cold-mixed dandelions, a small pile of stir-fried rabbit meat, and even a steamed bun made of wheat flour. Although it was not sweet, the soft and dense texture still touched Ningxia.
Ningxia then remembered the hot soy milk she had brought back and quickly opened it, "Sangsang, Lin Yi, I bought this soy milk outside. Drink it quickly, or it will taste fishy if it gets cold."
Sangsang blinked her eyes and watched Ningxia unscrew the lid. "Soy milk? What is it?"
Not only Ningxia, Lin Yi was also stunned by the way he was eating. During the disaster year, Sangsang was only two years old. Sangsang...
Ningxia hid the pain and sadness in her eyes, smiled and touched Sangsang's furry head, "It's sweet milk!"
Sangsang's eyes lit up, "Sweet!"
Lin Yi put down the bowl and held the kettle to feed Sangsang. Sangsang took a sip, and a circle of white foam floated on his upper lip, which was very cute. "It tastes good!" After saying that, he lowered his head and took a big sip before looking up and pushing the kettle towards Lin Yi, "Brother, drink it!"
Lin Yi smiled, his eyes, which had just begun to show some determination, were filled with tenderness. "Brother drank it before, and I'll leave it for Sangsang."
"But, brother is young and has forgotten the taste. Drink it quickly, and it will be sweet when you remember it!" Whenever Sangsang's sentences became long, she would become incoherent, but Ningxia and Lin Yi were already familiar with her usual way of speaking and understood her effortlessly.
The unfamiliar face suddenly appeared in Lin Yi's mind. It was his mother.
Before the disaster, his father hadn't perished in the earthquake and was running a publicly listed company. Although his mother often went shopping and partying, she still occasionally cared about him and took him out to play. After his father's death, she changed... Even though many years had passed, that man's gentle and kind face remained deeply engraved in his mind, unforgettable. His mother, on the other hand, had become increasingly blurred.
Ningxia looked at Lin Yi's gradually red eyes, put down the plate in her hand and touched Lin Yi's head. Lin Yi buried his head in Ningxia's warm shoulders and said in a muffled voice, "Sister Xia Xia..." Ever since he stepped into Bluebird, he has been weighed down by something in his heart and dared not say it out loud.
Ningxia thought he was just thinking about someone else and could only offer dry comfort, "The past is the past. There will always be soy milk in the future." Ningxia patted Lin Yi's head. This child had been incredibly sensible since they met him, but in fact, he was incredibly soft-hearted. It seemed that his past experiences hadn't made him extreme, but instead made him cherish everything he had now even more.
Seeing the two of them hugging each other, Sangsang also rushed over and said, "Brother, don't be sad, Sangsang. Don't fight with me for Tiantian."
This made both adults laugh. Lin Yi readily took the drink and took a sip, a hint of sweetness filling his heart. Those things weren't all bitter. At least, he had met Sangsang and Sister Xia Xia, hadn't he?
The tofu shop owner was quite generous and made a large amount of soy milk. Sangsang didn't drink much, but took it all home. Ningxia kept drinking it, and she was worried she'd get up at night and wouldn't be able to eat after drinking soy milk. So she simply collected the soy milk and threw it into the well in the yard, to drink tomorrow.
Even so, Sangsang still left most of the steamed bun uneaten, and there were some spicy dishes. Ningxia put the steamed bun away for her, and the rest of the dishes all went into Lin Yi's stomach.
Ningxia washed herself and said, "Let's go. Let's go to the Government Affairs Office to check out the situation and help digest our food." Holding Sangsang's hand, with Lin Yi following behind, the three of them left the stop and walked out.
The docking point, trading point and government office formed a triangle. The trading point and government office were across the street, and the three of them found them effortlessly.
"Hello, what can I do for you?"
The familiar rhetoric and nonchalant attitude made Ningxia wonder if she had returned to the years before the disaster. She looked at the staff in front of her and said, "I want to ask about the diaspora."
The woman was called Sister Ming. She was a middle-aged woman, very thin, with a righteous look between her brows. She was out of place in this small office.
From Ningxia's words, and the way he was dressed, Sister Ming knew these people couldn't afford the shelter. She sighed inwardly. They were scattered, making it difficult to manage. She remained calm and replied, "Are there any residency requirements?"
“Are there designated forest areas?”
Sister Ming looked up at her in surprise, then saw two skinny children standing not far away. She looked away again and saw Ningxia's fairly well-proportioned figure and obviously good mental state.
Sister Ming remained calm and said, "Okay, please wait a moment. I'll help you check."
Ningxia nodded and looked around. It was called the Administrative Office, but it was actually just a small bungalow, less than 40 square meters. The walls were painted with a slightly rough layer of putty, a pale gray. A waist-high wooden wall separated the staff from the people who came to do business, but it still looked presentable.
