Chapter 14: Conversation with Vera (Part 1)

I leaned against Nice's tombstone and fell asleep quietly. It seemed that this was the only way to make me feel at ease.

I vaguely heard a pair of footsteps coming towards me, and it felt like he was walking next to me.

Vera looked at me and kicked me awake. I was startled and felt extremely confused looking at Vera in front of me.

Me: "Ms. Vera, are you going to the cemetery to scare people?"

Vera placed a lily directly on Nice's grave, then sat down and drank the synthetic wine.

I felt a little speechless: "Miss Vera, it's a bit strange that you put lilies on the tombstone."

Vera took a sip of her wine and yelled at me, "Why are you talking so much nonsense? You're here to see Nice, too."

I nodded, and Vera put down the bottle: "I always feel that what I said to him before was a bit too much, so I came to take a look."

Vera finished the entire bottle of wine, then stood up and began to ramble, "Lord! I kneel in this white church, begging for your forgiveness. You said your believers will become angels to bless the world, but why are my hands stained with blood? I've forgotten who I'm kneeling to."

I thought I was drunk, so I just looked at Vera quietly, but then Vera suddenly pushed me to the ground: "Hua Qi, no, Commander Grey Crow, tell me, am I an angel or the god of death?"

I looked at Vera's drunken face, which was filled with hidden sadness. "I want to hear your story."

After listening to it, Vera lay down on the grass nearby and laughed, saying, "That's a very long story."

In 2099, 10 years after the Great Revolution, in the city of Cawdor in the European League.

My mother was leaning there, sitting next to the fireplace. I walked over gently and rested my head on her legs. My mother touched my long hair with her hands.

At this time, a man opened the door with snow on his body and walked into the entrance hall. The man patted the snow off his body and hung it on the clothes rack.

Looking at the scene in front of him, he said gently: "Vera, how old are you? Are you still clinging to your mother? Can't you give your great father a hug? My back hurts every day."

I said angrily, "Who told you not to play with me yesterday? Besides, you just got home and you're cold, so you don't want a hug." The man smiled but said nothing. I was only eight years old at that time.

In 2109, the underground power plant of Nitus was occupied by infected bodies, and all countries in the European Union lost nearly 70% of their electricity.

The infected bodies are surrounding us, and there are strange whales in the western waters. The European Union is under siege.

Even so, I would go to church every Sunday to pray that my parents were well in heaven. They should be blessing me now.

In 2112, my father died on the Nitous Plateau, and my mother passed away within two months. My mother was a doctor, and I inherited her clinic.

I was fiddling with medicine in the clinic when a bald man pushed the door open and came in. I quickly stepped forward to greet him: "Hello, Commander Connie."

Connie sat in the chair and whispered, "Vera, haven't you always wanted to go to the front line as a battlefield doctor?"

My eyes lit up and I quickly said, "Is it finally my turn this time?"

Connie: "There are too few medics on the front lines right now. I have no choice but to let you go."

I was overjoyed: “I feel so honored to have been able to save others.”

Connie: "You should know the horror of the battlefield! So you still want to go?"

Me: "Didn't my father go too? This is a very honorable thing, and I think what I'm doing is meaningful."

Connie sighed and said, "You two are really alike. So, you will report to the front tomorrow."

After saying that, Connie quickly walked out of the clinic, muttering in his heart: "I'm sorry, old friend."

I was so happy at that moment that I even started singing hymns, and I was so excited that I stayed up all night.

Early in the morning, I excitedly packed my bag and set off. I walked through the sparsely populated streets. The rumbling sound of artillery could still be heard in the distance. I quickly passed the checkpoint and climbed over the barbed wire and arrived at the front-line base.

Even though I was outside the door, I could hear chaos inside. Screams were heard constantly, which was very creepy. I calmed myself down and slowly lifted the curtain. The situation inside could really be called hell. The ground was covered with blood, and there were broken limbs everywhere. There were hundreds of wounded people, but only a dozen nurses and doctors were busy working frantically.

"Where's the doctor's serum?"

"The wounded man is still bleeding."

"He needs an amputation."

"He's not breathing anymore. Why are you trying to save him? It's a waste of time."

“Medications are totally inadequate.”

"What should we do?" No one noticed me at all, but I walked over and started treating the wounded.

When I was bandaging a wounded man, a nurse said sullenly, "What are you doing?"

Looking at his gloomy face, I felt a little uneasy: "I'm bandaging him."

The nurse scolded loudly, "This is completely unnecessary and should be used on more seriously injured patients. You look like a newcomer, right? Please leave now, but leave your medicine behind. You are not experienced enough. You will only waste more lives and cause more trouble."

I said in panic, "But." Before I could finish, the nurse snatched my luggage and pushed me out the door.

I sat outside the house, blankly, feeling very confused because I didn't play my role. The soldiers passing by didn't even look at me, and their faces were very numb.

In this way, they were busy all night, and I found a shabby house, spread a bed and fell asleep.
