"Operator, hello. If you are hearing this broadcast, it means the erosion has already begun, and we have started to be forgotten by the world."
"If the erosion goes too deep and c...
"Very interesting."
"It seems you've never heard of the [layered] feature. Within this space... any act of violence is futile if I so choose."
"I can't die at all."
"In reality, I can completely isolate myself from the harm you have caused me."
"Don't waste your energy, buddy. Instead of wasting your time, why don't you sit down, have a drink, and brag a bit?"
Outside the Dolphin Hotel lay the remains of dead operatives, their bodies emitting a putrid stench under the light.
Apart from the main building, all other buildings had completely collapsed. They arrived half an hour ago—under the instructions of the branch's higher-ups, they even contacted the observers at the terminal before taking action. At that time, those who weren't completely dead said that the place was in complete chaos. Joseph threw He Yu into the wave layer and then left, seemingly to cause trouble.
The scapegoats quickly counted the number of people and found that only three were still breathing. All the observers found it unbelievable that there were still lucky survivors, although they were no longer in their right minds. But they could be sent back to Eoubs and they would survive—they would find a way.
The next step is to wait for new instructions, for higher-level operatives to come and clean up the mess, or to hope that the first few to get in will pull off a miracle.
Adam was still talking about the partition when a sudden ripple came from the entire space.
Carlos bit the rim of his wine glass, listening expressionlessly as he said, "I know it's not good for you to suddenly relax like this, but so what? Your teacher will give you a quick and painless lesson later—"
The voice was so arrogant, yet it could penetrate deep into one's mind. He felt his heart pounding, his hands trembling uncontrollably, and the murderous intent that had finally subsided was stirred up again because of that damned thing he had been forced to agree to, that so-called 'fate'.
Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, another inexplicable flash occurred within the clouds above the dome, and the fire reignited, making the blood-splattered ruins resemble a vast scene from a master-level oil painting.
One could even faintly hear a bunch of helpless, angry shouts and commands. Adam continued, "What should we do next? Let's ease the tension. Carlos—my friend, please don't make that face. Your altered notes are completely useless now. We all know how disgusting the higher-ups' methods of torturing people are, and my characteristics... are already merciful enough. As long as you and Merlink are obedient enough, you won't suffer."
He pulled out the pen hidden in his wrist.
My anxiety and boredom reached their peak; standing in the afterglow of the blood-red light, I felt as if I would melt away at any moment.
Merlink turned to look at him, about to say something, when Carlos suddenly sprang up, raised his hand and reached for Adam's right eye, forcefully stabbing it down.
Instantly, he heard something scream with heart-wrenching pain. The sound was so loud, it seemed to come from inside his own body, but he didn't think much of it and just let it engulf everything. The pain was synchronized with the frequency, almost making him faint.
He released the pen, reached in with his fingers to grab the ball-shaped thing inside, pinched it hard with his thumb and forefinger, and pulled it out.
The movement was too exaggerated and carried an indescribable malice. The pain at that moment felt like it was tearing his entire brain out. Blood and mucus drew an arc in the air, swept past, and splattered on the floor, but he did not stop moving, without the slightest hesitation.
Adam's voice vanished instantly, and he collapsed to the ground, finally, it was fucking quiet.
At the same time, Carlos lost his sight for a short while, as well as his consciousness, before finding himself still standing—his right eye was completely vacant, and blood was streaming down half of his clothes. Merlink supported him, checking his condition with a helpless expression.
He grabbed the other person's eyeball with his right hand; it was cold and trembling, as if it wanted to be shoved back in.
Then he stared at it again, suddenly looked up, and gave Adam's corpse—it was a little hard to see, but it was in that spot—a smug smile.
At this moment, Carlos's hands were covered in blood, which dripped down his fingertips. He casually waved it a few times, then threw the thing at his feet and stuck his foot in place.
Then, with a sudden stomp, the thing underneath turned into a pulp, leaving only a trail of slime and blood.
He turned to Merlink and said, "This idiot talks too much, I can't stand it."
The man smiled at him, his expression gentle yet somewhat somber. He patted his shoulder, his hands covered in blood, but he didn't seem to care.
He said, "I understand, but it's no use."
"Yes, it does nothing but cause you pain."
Almost at the same time, Adam got up, and the wound around his eye had completely healed.
“I’ve already said, any attack is useless against me. I can deflect them and then inflict them on you.”
"The same applies to the qualities you are so proud of."
"This is... what my teacher taught me."
"Have you ever heard of the theory of fairness? If you damage something, someone will inevitably take revenge on you."
The scene was clearly bloody, but Adam remained as indifferent as an emotionless machine.
"You can continue doing that. It doesn't matter if the two of you are together. You won't die."
"Because I can handle it."
"But... what about you?"
In anxious silence.
Something unexpected happened—He Yu pushed open the door and walked in.
He walked over to Melink and Carlos, but did not sit down. He simply stood there calmly, taking in his surroundings.
