Chapter 237 Sunset Hill
Getting lost was completely unexpected.
Sheen lit another cigarette, completely disregarding whether Bel Hera would choke on it, or even if she did. She was frantically flipping through the map, only to find that the damn thing was utterly useless, because she had no idea where she was. There wasn't a single checkpoint that matched her current situation, and there were practically no straight roads on the entire map. Besides… even if she assumed she'd driven onto some highway not recorded in the database, was that really… accurate? Pandora and He Yu wouldn't deliberately get themselves into trouble.
She tried to turn on the location system that came with the terminal, which was connected to a satellite. She had planned to uninstall it before she set off, but now she could finally use it.
Sheen started it up smoothly—then countless chaotic lines flashed on it, without any specific image or sound, just like the illogical snowflakes flying all over the world.
Fuck you, my luck is really bad.
She thought with great pain that if it weren't for the severe shortage of manpower and her own anxiety to rescue Ethan, she wouldn't have bothered with this damn mission at all.
Then, Sheen tapped the terminal communication function several more times, wanting to call Pandora and ask her if he was still within the controllable area.
As you can imagine, no matter how she pressed the buttons, her field of vision remained blank—completely useless.
That's absolutely right, perfect attendance.
She can finally enjoy her twilight years in a corner abandoned by human civilization.
After complaining, Sheen, cigarette dangling from her lips, started the car again and drove off. What could she do? For now, she could only keep driving, wanting to see what even more outrageous things would happen next.
About ten minutes later.
A flash of blue light suddenly appeared in front of the SUV. Sheen was very focused and slammed on the brakes the moment he saw the light. He looked closely and found that it was just a dilapidated sign painted with reflective paint. Judging from the degree of weathering, it seemed to have been there for hundreds of years.
She turned on the headlights to make it easier to see what was on the sign—it said there was a tunnel ahead, a full fifteen kilometers long, called Sunset Hill—it sounded pretty damn literary.
The fuel in her tank was running out very quickly, only a third left. Usually, there are supply points in tunnels like this. Even if there aren't, she had to go. Besides checking if there were any other routes, she didn't know where else she could go now.
Thinking this, Sheen prepared to restart the car. Just then, Bel Hera suddenly got out of the car, without even putting on a down jacket. He stood there, arms wrapped around himself, staring grimly at the sign across the street in the biting wind and snow.
Sheen rolled down the car window and warned, "I advise you to go back inside and sit down right away, Dean. You'll freeze to death if you stay outside in your current condition."
The other person didn't react at all, just stared at the road sign as if they had seen something astonishing.
Sheen took a deep breath and said impatiently, "We're almost out of oil. We can't wait any longer."
Only then did Bell turn his head and stare at her. In the car headlights, her deep brown eyes shone even brighter, their depths unreadable, yet they possessed a chilling quality. Like part of this desolate world, they exuded a gloomy darkness that confused one's reason.
“We…we’d better not go into that tunnel.” Bell managed to utter this with great effort, his expression gloomy and disgusted.
Sheen couldn't understand why she was acting so crazy. She cursed and then jumped out of the car. It was already almost minus twenty degrees Celsius outside. She didn't have time to play word games with this madwoman.
So she rushed to Belle, shoved her forcefully into the back seat of the car, and shouted, "Stop talking nonsense, get in! I'm not going to die as ridiculously as you! Even if I were to die, it wouldn't be here!"
Bell stopped struggling, looked at her with an ambiguous gaze, and finally cooperated.
“Listen, we are indeed in trouble,” Sheehan said. “My ability can raise the temperature of everything in sight, to about the level of the sun’s core. So, barring any unforeseen circumstances, you probably won’t freeze to death. But being trapped in a region with different time-space currents isn’t a solution either. Who knows what era we’ll be in when we get out?”
“You’re right, we are indeed in big trouble.” Bell stared intently at her, a look that made Sheen inexplicably uncomfortable, filled with too much… madness.
“We’re in big trouble,” the madwoman said again.
“Okay, I was just kidding.” Sheen belatedly realized that the other person had suddenly become so normal, so he tried his best to reassure him, saying, “If we just investigate, maybe there’s a supply point and a signal station in that tunnel. Then everyone can take a good rest, and maybe even get some sleep. Don’t you like sleeping? We’ll be out of there when we wake up, don’t worry.”
“That tunnel,” the person in the back seat said to himself, not listening to her at all, “could absolutely…absolutely kill you.”
Sheen's tactical lean back, is that even a bit too much? Even though I'm not a professional stunner, those traits are pretty impressive, okay?
“I’m sorry, it seems you’ve misunderstood me.” She added, “Although I know I know about your conceptual abilities.”
"It's like ignoring the laws of all things and simulating divinity, but I'm not exactly trash either. I heard that your special ability requires certain conditions to activate, but... Eoubs has sealed all your data. But you can be B01, ma'am. You're just one step away from being an A-level being. We're both experts, so there's no need to be so cowardly."
"Besides, we have no other choice. The snow outside is getting heavier and heavier. If we keep wandering around aimlessly, the car will run out of gas. I don't want to be carrying you around in the snow."
"It's because of... my characteristics," the person in the back seat suddenly said.
Sheen raised an eyebrow, turned around and looked at him, puzzled. "Hmm? That's quite a lot of information."
“When you came to Black Goat Asylum, I used my special ability.” Bell curled up in his seat and said in a low voice, “I shouldn’t have done that… Damn it, I should have continued to be crazy, that way I could have lived a long and peaceful life in the ward.”
Sheehan tried hard to connect the two things.
"You activated your special ability, isn't that a good thing?" She clearly didn't quite understand, so she continued to ask, "So what direct impact does it have on our journey to the tunnel?"
“That characteristic is called imperfectionism. Once it’s started, it can only be restarted after the pre-selected goal has been achieved.” The madwoman sighed repeatedly, looking very distressed. “Anything I’m prepared to do will eventually be completed, but it will never be perfect.”
"So we'll be taken to the Sunset Hill Tunnel."
"That place... is hell."
I hate everyone.
