Chapter 89 The Price of the Marriage Contract

Gan Tang forced a smile and continued, "The city must be defended, and food must be eaten. It's all for the future of our country, so why distinguish between us? No matter how well-trained an army is, it can't fire a gun without bullets; no matter how powerful airplanes and artillery are, they can't fly without fuel. Uncle Chu has been silently protecting all of these things."

Since we've already brought it up, let's say more. Since we've offended Old Master Chu, we have to appease Chairman Chu. If he could disobey his father once, he might as well do it again.

Gan Tang continued, "The extremely cold plateau didn't originally have electricity. It was Uncle Chu who personally led people up there to bring electricity so that the army could be stationed there to protect the border. How can a warrior who arrived on the cold plateau even before the army be called a deserter?"

“I heard from Jia Hehe that this is why Uncle Chu developed a fear of the cold.”

When Gan Tang gets nervous, she speaks like she's writing an essay. After stating the importance, she talks about the achievements; after talking about the achievements, she adds another wave of emotion; then she concludes with a summary and emotional sublimation.

“I think that your eldest and second uncles inherited your mantle, but Uncle Chu inherited your lofty ideals.”

In the silence of the room, the little boy who wanted to eat crab clapped his hands and said, "Auntie is right."

The eldest aunt quickly grabbed her eldest grandson's hand and asked with a smile, "Where did you find this precious girl, third sister-in-law? She's not even married yet, and she's already so protective of her parents-in-law."

Laughter and cheerful conversation returned to the dining table, except for Gan Tang, who was sweating nervously. Fortunately, Grandpa Chu didn't seem to have any objections to her.

As the birthday banquet was about to end, Grandpa Chu said, "After Jiahe gets married and has children, our family's four generations living together will be complete."

Because of this one sentence, everyone chimed in and, with their own comments, actually settled on the date for Chu Jiahe and Gan Tang's engagement.

The spring night was slightly cool, carrying the fragrance of grass after a light rain. A hearty laugh pierced the sky as Chu Jiahe, holding Gantang, danced along the long flower-lined path.

"Jiahe, I'm dizzy, I'm dizzy, put me down."

With her feet firmly on the ground, Gan Tang still felt a little unreal; things were going much more smoothly than she had imagined.

"Jiahe, we're getting engaged. Tell me, what have you done to marry me?" Of course, she didn't think it was her somewhat naive and impassioned speech that moved Grandpa Chu.

Chu Jiahe took Gan Tang's hand and walked forward.

"The reason why Grandpa always disliked Father was because he felt that Father was the son who most resembled him, and he always wanted Father to inherit his mantle. But Father preferred business. Father and son were at odds all their lives, and they always had to settle their differences."

At this point, Chu Jiahe stopped and looked at his beloved girl: "I promised Grandpa that as long as I can marry you, I will not inherit the Chu Group."

This means that the war ended in the old man's victory.

Gan Tang felt a pang of sadness upon hearing this: "This is too unfair to you."

"How could you feel wronged!" Chu Jiahe comforted, touching her delicate cheek. "I've never liked doing business anyway; my job at the Chu Group is just a side job."

"So what is your main job?"

"Academician of Princeton University Graduate School"

That's the best university in the world. No one has ever become a fellow of Princeton's graduate school at the age of thirty. Never.

Gan Tang was stunned into silence.

Chu Jiahe lightly pinched Gan Tang's cheek with slight dissatisfaction and questioned, "Don't you care about your fiancé at all?" With the capabilities of the Lu Group, it's impossible that they couldn't find out this information.

“Who would bother looking into those things, especially your grandfather?” Gan Tang gasped. “If I had known, I would never have dared to say those things to you back then.”

What did you say about me?

"You're just being delusional!"

Chu Jiahe remembered, smiled, and touched Gan Tang's forehead, asking, "So am I now?"

"Of course not."

As soon as he finished speaking, Chu Jiahe kissed the red lips that were so close to his. He had never imagined that he would so quickly entrust his life to a woman he had only known for half a year.

A black sedan ran over the intertwined figures, then slowly backed away. The window rolled down, revealing a gloomy, dark face.

Chu Mingxuan said fiercely, "Go home right now."

After saying that, the car sped away.

He looked genuinely angry. Gan Tang emerged from behind Chu Jiahe, asking fearfully, "Uncle Chu, do you not hate me now?"

"How could that be? He'll only like you more."

Gan Tang asked, puzzled, "Why?"

“I can’t be the heir to the Chu Group, but you can. Dad has lamented to Mom more than once that you’re a business genius.” Chu Jiahe whispered in Gan Tang’s ear with a chuckle, “Right now, Dad is probably crying in Mom’s arms. After he’s done crying, he’ll say with a pitiful look, ‘Your son is ruined, you’ll have to raise your grandson!’”

Gan Tang was amused by him and said happily, "Then I'll be the heiress of two major conglomerates from now on, a top-tier rich woman. Hey, you've made me do all the work, what are you doing?"

Chu Jiahe suppressed his smile and looked troubled.

"What's wrong?" Gan Tang sensed something was amiss and asked anxiously, "What else did you promise Grandpa?"

“Grandpa often said that his children and grandchildren are all being trained for the country. When my term at Princeton ends, I will go to the classified department, where I will most likely be researching secret weapons.”

Secret research is a noble endeavor, but it comes at the cost of freedom. No wonder Grandpa Chu urged him to get married and have children.

"Jiahe..." Gantang's voice trembled with a sob. She had thought he only knew how to tinker with a few oddly shaped generators.

"Xintang, it's nothing. That's just something I enjoy doing." Chu Jiahe gently wiped away the tears from Gantang's eyes and said apologetically, "I just feel sorry for you, for making you live like a widow."
