Chapter 199 On the Road

Two hours later, they successfully drove the car out of Yangzhou.

After everyone got used to Huang's driving skills, they weren't so panicked anymore, although they might have just gone numb.

When it was time for the next shift to be driven, everyone got off to get some fresh air.

Liu Liu, who had been huddled at Cheng Zhi's feet, also shakily got down and ran away to vomit.

This is the first time I've ever seen a wolf vomit.

Seeing Liu Liu's miserable state, Cheng Zhi scratched her head awkwardly, "I forgot Liu Liu was under my feet, and there was no seatbelt."

Xiao Feiran patted Cheng Zhi on the shoulder, then turned around and took a bottle of mineral water from the car. "It's okay, I'll drive it later. I'll make sure it's steady."

After saying that, Xiao Feiran took the bottled water to find Liu Liu. The child had a hard life, so let her rinse her mouth.

After a short rest, they set off again.

After settling down, Huang Yiyi picked up her phone, which she hadn't used in a long time, typed a message, and handed it to Cheng Zhi to read: "Zheng Wan and the others set off around 2 p.m., we might run into them on the way."

Cheng Zhi nodded to indicate that she understood and that it was good that they had set off.

Suddenly, another thought occurred to her. She took Huang Yiyi's phone and typed, "Did they tell Qi Yanche and Chen Yiyi that they left?"

Huang Yiyi took it and looked at it, then shook her head and replied, "I don't know. She didn't mention it on the note she left, but I think she probably did."

While looking out the window, Huang's mother suddenly turned to Huang Yiyi and asked, "We've moved away, so what happened to your two male classmates from Yangzhou?"

Unexpectedly, Huang's mother still remembered them. Huang Yiyi said, "I went to look for them before the earthquake, but they were not at home. I heard from the neighbors that they seemed to have moved away. Now I don't know where they are."

“Yes, I was worried a couple of days ago, so I went there again, but they were still not there. The letters Qi Yanche sent to them were temporarily received by the neighbors.” Huang Yiyi said this and then stopped talking.

Huang Ma nodded, muttering, "I hope they've run to a safe place by now."

Perhaps it was because Huang Ma mentioned Lu Yuan and Shen Lingfeng that Cheng Ma also thought of Zhou Lin. She wondered how the child's experiment was going and whether she had received any news so that she could leave Yangzhou quickly.

They drove smoothly for the next three hours.

They passed through both the suburbs and the city, but they didn't see a single person, not even a shadow.

Cheng Zhi put her leg over Huang Yiyi's leg. "Sigh, it seems that infectious disease took away a lot of people."

Leaning against the window, Cheng Ye looked at the distant, dusky horizon and felt a deep emptiness in his heart. He rested his head on Cheng Zhi's shoulder and said, "It feels like there are only a few of us left in the world. I feel so empty inside."

Cheng Zhi looked down at her younger brother, whose eyes were filled with melancholy, patted his head, and said comfortingly, "No, when we get to Jiufeng Mountain, we will have more companions."

The vehicle drove on for a while longer, and then the night completely swallowed the world. Apart from the little light in front of them, they could see nothing else.

Cheng Zhi replaced Xiao Feiran, and after driving carefully for another two or three hours, they found a small shop that had been robbed by the roadside. The area was deserted, so they decided to spend the night there.

Cheng Zhi shone a flashlight, kicked away the trash on the ground, and then dismantled two bed boards from the inner room, announcing that she would sleep there tonight.

Mr. Huang, who was standing at the door, immediately waved his hand, "Sleeping here is no different from sleeping on the street. No, no, all you girls should go to the car and stay there. The three of us men can keep watch."

Cheng Ye, who was rummaging through the counter, nodded. "I can keep watch all night by myself. I'm not sleepy at all."

Everyone had their own opinion, and Cheng Zhi, unable to persuade them otherwise, made a slight concession.

"Alright then, four of us will keep watch tonight, two for the first half of the night and two for the second half. We'll set off as soon as it's light."

Cheng's father wanted to argue, but before he could open his mouth, Cheng Zhi retorted, "Don't say that a retired veteran can guard the area alone; we need two! I am the commander-in-chief of this operation!"

After some discussion, Cheng's father and Cheng Ye decided to keep watch for the first half of the night, while Cheng Zhi and Cheng's mother would keep watch for the second half.

Originally, Mr. and Mrs. Huang wanted to try again, but Mr. Cheng patted Mr. Huang on the shoulder very seriously and said, "Brother Huang, how can you stay up all night? We need you to drive tomorrow!"

These words made Huang's father feel embarrassed. Did he really think he was that important?

He adjusted his glasses with great determination. "Brother, don't worry, I'll definitely perform exceptionally well tomorrow and try to reach our destination by tonight!"

Cheng's father: "..." That's not necessary.

Cheng's father and Cheng Ye sat in the convenience store keeping watch. Cheng Zhi kept turning back to say, "Don't fall asleep! Stay alert! If you see anything unidentified, chop it down, understand?"

Cheng Ye nodded frantically, and Cheng's father also repeatedly agreed.

Cheng Zhi got into the car and leaned against her mother. She set an alarm and closed her eyes to rest.

When the time came, Cheng Zhi and her mother got out of the car to relieve the two of them, and also brought Liu Liu along.

Fearing that the two men would make too much noise, Cheng's mother added, "You two should be quiet later. Feiran is a light sleeper, so don't wake her up."

The mother and daughter sat down, and Cheng Zhi stroked Liu Liu's fur before letting it run around and play outside on its own.

Sitting by the door, Cheng's mother looked up at the stars in the sky and couldn't help but sigh, "The last time I saw a sky full of stars was when I was eight or nine years old. After that, the world was full of lights, and slowly I couldn't see the stars anymore."
