“Your Majesty, should there be a next life, this concubine wishes to never have met you, and to never see each other for all eternity.”
Yu Jingchen hated her, yet the last thing she did i...
Yu Jingchen looked at the sleeping person in his arms and released her pressure points. Then he adjusted her position so that she could lean against him more comfortably.
About fifteen minutes later, Xinglai arrived with a few guards.
"Your Majesty, all the assassins have been killed. I have already sent people to investigate this group of assassins." Xinglai reported from outside the carriage, bowing. Yu Jingchen did not speak.
"No need to investigate anymore, let's return to the palace," Yu Jingchen said after a while.
“Yes…” Although Xinglai was puzzled as to why Yu Jingchen would just let it go like that, she still agreed.
Just as Xinglai was about to order someone to drive the carriage back to the palace, she heard Yu Jingchen say, "Wait, let's go back to the inn and return to the palace tomorrow morning."
"Yes..." Xinglai agreed, but what's the difference between tonight and tomorrow morning?
The carriage headed towards the inn. Yu Jingchen gently coaxed the girl in his arms, telling her that he had promised her he wouldn't return to the palace today.
Upon arriving at the inn, Yu Jingchen carried Nan Zhiyun down from the carriage and went straight back to the room they had stayed in earlier that day. He carefully placed her on the bed.
Perhaps because of the commotion, Nan Zhiyun slowly woke up.
"Did I wake you up?" Yu Jingchen spoke very softly, his low, husky voice carrying a hint of magnetism.
"Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun didn't seem to be fully awake yet.
Yu Jingchen reached out his hand, and Nan Zhiyun naturally hugged his arm.
"What's wrong? Hmm?" Yu Jingchen gently supported the person.
"Where is this? Have we returned to the palace?" Nan Zhiyun asked sleepily.
"We're at the inn now. You just fell asleep on the boat," Yu Jingchen replied.
"It's getting late, why don't you go to sleep?" Yu Jingchen coaxed.
Nan Zhiyun rubbed her eyes, her thoughts gradually clearing. She looked at Yu Jingchen somewhat blankly, then shook her head.
"Don't want it?" Yu Jingchen asked softly.
"I'm awake, I'm not sleepy anymore." Nan Zhiyun's voice still had a slightly childlike quality.
"What does Yun'er want to do?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
Nan Zhiyun shook her head again: "I don't know."
Yu Jingchen: "..."
Yu Jingchen helped her sit up and then let her lean against him: "Do you still want to go out?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
"I don't know what to do anymore." Nan Zhiyun didn't want to sleep.
"Why are you acting like a little kid? Why are you making a fuss and refusing to go to sleep?" Yu Jingchen smiled helplessly.
"Does Your Majesty wish to rest?" Nan Zhiyun asked him.
"I still have some things to take care of," Yu Jingchen replied.
"Your Majesty may continue with your work. May I sit here?" Nan Zhiyun asked cautiously. She didn't know how she had fallen asleep again, but now she really couldn't sleep, since she had slept almost the entire afternoon.
"Alright, it's up to you then." Yu Jingchen didn't try to persuade him further; if he didn't want to sleep, then he didn't have to.
Yu Jingchen had Xinglai bring some important matters from the day to the room. Nan Zhiyun lay on her side on the bed, feeling incredibly lazy. Normally, she would have paid attention to these rules, but now she had completely forgotten about them.
Yu Jingchen sat to one side and began to deal with the things at hand. Fortunately, he took some storybooks and delivered them to Nan Zhiyun.
"Your Majesty, this is what His Majesty asked me to bring. If you're bored, you can take a look to pass the time," Xinglai said.
Nan Zhiyun took the book and, thankfully, tactfully withdrew. She opened the book; she quite enjoyed reading these kinds of books, but she could only manage a few pages before giving up. It wasn't that it was bad, or that she disliked it, she simply couldn't get into it.
Nan Zhiyun looked at Yu Jingchen, who was busy on the side. To be honest, Yu Jingchen was different when he was seriously handling matters compared to his usual self.
Nan Zhiyun wasn't sure if it was just her imagination, but she vaguely sensed that Yu Jingchen seemed to be in a bad mood. Was it because of the things he was dealing with?
Nan Zhiyun stayed obediently. She wanted to ask, but she didn't dare to make a sound, so she was still quite conflicted.
Yu Jingchen was not happy at all. Looking at the things presented by the people below, he began to exude a fierce aura. He only restrained himself and did not show it openly because Nan Zhiyun was there.
"Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun's voice came from the other end. Yu Jingchen concealed the storm in his eyes and tried his best to make himself look less frightening.
"What's wrong?" Yu Jingchen asked in a soft voice.
"Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun hesitated, wanting to speak but stopping herself.
This time, Yu Jingchen really had no idea what Nan Zhiyun was thinking.
"Is there anything you want to say or do? Hmm?" Yu Jingchen asked again.
"...Was Your Majesty angry just now?" Nan Zhiyun asked him after hesitating for a moment.
Yu Jingchen was taken aback. Was it that obvious? Or was it because Nan Zhiyun was too sensitive? And she always seemed so cautious; Yu Jingchen felt a pang of sympathy for her.
Then Nan Zhiyun got off the bed. Yu Jingchen looked at her, somewhat confused about what she was going to do. Nan Zhiyun came over to Yu Jingchen's side.
"What's wrong?" Yu Jingchen asked her, pulling her to sit down beside him. Looking at Nan Zhiyun's bare feet, Yu Jingchen frowned slightly and quietly covered her feet.
"Be careful not to catch a cold," Yu Jingchen said. Although the room was warm, the floor was cold.
"What do you want me to do?" Yu Jingchen asked Nan Zhiyun.
"Was Your Majesty angry just now...?" Nan Zhiyun asked.
"It's just some trivial matter, don't overthink it." Yu Jingchen patted Nan Zhiyun's head. He was afraid that Nan Zhiyun would overthink things and think that he was angry because of her.
"Was I too reckless today? Did I waste Your Majesty's time?" Nan Zhiyun had this thought in her mind. Yu Jingchen was the emperor, so busy all day long, yet he had spent the whole day playing with her.
"It was my idea to come, how could it be a delay? I'm very happy today, so I want to thank Yun'er." Yu Jingchen relaxed.
"Your Majesty..." Nan Zhiyun seemed to want to say something, but she also seemed to be holding back something.
Yu Jingchen noticed, so he took the initiative to ask her, "What's wrong? Is there anything else you want to say? Didn't I tell you today that you shouldn't be afraid to say or do anything you want to say, just be direct?" Yu Jingchen slowly guided Nan Zhiyun.
Nan Zhiyun looked at Yu Jingchen, hesitated for a long while, and then slowly said, "Your Majesty, I was a little scared just now. Seeing Your Majesty's appearance just now, I..."
Although Nan Zhiyun didn't finish speaking, Yu Jingchen already understood what she meant. Yu Jingchen helplessly picked her up and carried her towards the bed.
