“Your Majesty, should there be a next life, this concubine wishes to never have met you, and to never see each other for all eternity.”
Yu Jingchen hated her, yet the last thing she did i...
Nan Zhiyun quieted down, and Yu Jingchen did not disturb her. Not long after, the inn's waiter, led by Xing Lai, brought up today's meal.
The food outside the palace wasn't as refined as that inside, but at least it tasted pretty good. Yu Jingchen glanced around and frowned when he saw that there was fish and meat in the dishes served today. "Take all this fish and meat away," Yu Jingchen said.
Xing Lai glanced at it and understood. He naturally knew that Nan Zhiyun was allergic to fish, but Yu Jingchen liked it, so he had it served. Actually, it wasn't just because Yu Jingchen liked it; he also wanted to test His Majesty's attitude towards Consort Shu.
It seems His Majesty has taken a liking to Consort Shu quite seriously. Following Yu Jingchen's instructions, I've had the waiter remove all those kinds of fish; I guess they won't need them when dining with Consort Shu anymore.
Just as Yu Jingchen was about to sit down at the dining table, he seemed to remember something, so he turned around and walked to Nan Zhiyun: "Aren't you hungry? Let's go get something to eat." Yu Jingchen said to her.
Nan Zhiyun was somewhat surprised, but only by his action of having the fish taken away. She was about to stand up when, in that instant, Yu Jingchen picked her up. Nan Zhiyun gasped, startled by Yu Jingchen's action.
"Isn't your foot injury still not healed? Didn't you just say it hurt? Can you walk over by yourself?" Yu Jingchen glanced at her, and Nan Zhiyun remained silent. Yu Jingchen didn't say anything else, but instead carried Nan Zhiyun to the dining table and made her sit down, while he sat down next to her.
Fortunately, she was quick to prepare the meal, but Yu Jingchen stopped her. She looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"Step down." Yu Jingchen didn't explain, he just said this.
Fortunately, no one asked too many questions. His Majesty probably just wanted some alone time with Consort Shu. So, he wisely took everyone away.
“There’s no one else around today, so you can relax and don’t bring any of the palace rules with you,” Yu Jingchen said, picking up his chopsticks. Nan Zhiyun hadn’t said a word. She had only mentioned wanting to eat to avoid awkwardness. She wasn’t actually hungry, but seeing the dishes before her, she felt a little tempted. Her mouth was watering, and she couldn’t resist starting to eat too.
Yu Jingchen had actually been paying attention to her movements. Now that he saw her start eating, his eyes flickered slightly. It was a good thing that she was willing to eat. Although he hadn't been to He'an Palace before, he had some basic knowledge of her, especially regarding food. His subordinates had always said that she had a poor appetite, so it was certainly something to be thankful for that she was now willing to eat something.
Perhaps it was because the food outside was quite special, but Nan Zhiyun had a good appetite today and ate quite a lot. Yu Jingchen actually couldn't eat much right now, but seeing Nan Zhiyun like this, his appetite was also whetted, and if he stopped eating, she probably wouldn't continue either.
So, to accommodate Nan Zhiyun, Yu Jingchen slowed down his eating pace, thinking that he could let Nan Zhiyun eat more, since it was quite difficult to do so.
Nan Zhiyun ate for about half an hour. She was able to control herself at first, but the food was really delicious, so she couldn't resist. Today's meal was probably the most she had eaten since she became pregnant.
"Is it ready?" Yu Jingchen asked, seeing that Nan Zhiyun had almost finished eating.
Nan Zhiyun felt a little embarrassed when she realized she had eaten so much in front of Yu Jingchen today. She put down her chopsticks and said, "I'm done eating..."
"Then let it go. Is there anything else you'd like to do?" Yu Jingchen asked her again.
Nan Zhiyun thought for a moment and realized there seemed to be nothing to do. But if they couldn't find anything to do, were they just going to sit there doing nothing?
"I want to read a book..." Nan Zhiyun said this because she couldn't find anything else to do.
Reading? Okay, Yu Jingchen didn't ask any more questions. He stood up, opened the door, and gave instructions to Xing Lai outside. Then someone came in to clean up the mess.
Because there were other people present, the atmosphere wasn't particularly awkward, but Nan Zhiyun still felt uneasy. Was she going to be in the same space as Yu Jingchen all night and for the next two days?
Nan Zhiyun had something on her mind. Yu Jingchen glanced at her but didn't say anything bad or overthink it, treating her as if she were acting the same as usual.
Before long, Xinglai brought the book as Yu Jingchen had instructed, and Yu Jingchen took it and placed it in front of Nan Zhiyun.
"Didn't you want to read books? Is this enough?" Yu Jingchen asked her.
Nan Zhiyun looked at the two books in front of her, not knowing what was inside, but she was sure these two books would be enough. So she nodded.
Yu Jingchen only dismissed Xinglai after seeing Nan Zhiyun nod, but... Xinglai's expression as he left was somewhat indescribable. His Majesty had just instructed him to find books, and he'd assumed it was His Majesty wanting to read them himself, but who knew it was Consort Shu? Those books... Consort Shu certainly wouldn't be interested in them, so he was currently in a dilemma.
But it was too late to say anything now, so after thinking it over, he withdrew. Nan Zhiyun also picked up the books from the table, but... what were these books? She was dumbfounded when she saw them. She couldn't understand some of the military strategy and historical treatises, and she didn't want to read them.
