The setting sun cast an eerie, blood-red glow over the dilapidated city. Ning Yu, dragging his weary body, staggered towards the makeshift shelter. He carried a few freshly dug root plants in his arms—the only food he had found during his brush with death, which he planned to take back to share with Grandpa Sun.
However, when he reached the vicinity of the shelter, the scene before him struck him like a thunderbolt. There stood Grandpa Sun with his back to him, holding a rusty steel bar in his hand, prying at the barbed wire fence at the entrance of the shelter again and again.
"Grandpa Sun, what are you doing?!" Ning Yu exclaimed and rushed over.
Upon hearing Ning Yu's voice, Grandpa Sun's movements visibly paused, but he did not turn around. Instead, he pried at the barbed wire even harder, as if he had not heard Ning Yu's shout.
"Grandpa Sun, stop! What are you doing?!" Ning Yu rushed to Grandpa Sun's side, grabbed his arm, and asked anxiously.
Grandpa Sun finally turned around, his cloudy eyes staring straight at Ning Yu. His once kind face now looked unusually distorted, as if he had become a different person.
"Who...who are you? Why are you stopping me?" Grandpa Sun's voice was hoarse and unfamiliar, as if it came from the depths of hell, making Ning Yu feel a chill run down her spine.
"Grandpa Sun, it's me, Ning Yu! Don't you recognize me?" A sense of foreboding welled up in Ning Yu's heart, but he still refused to believe that the strange old man in front of him was the same Grandpa Sun who had been taking care of him.
"Ning Yu? I don't know any Ning Yu..." Grandpa Sun forcefully shook off Ning Yu's hand and shouted excitedly, "I want to leave here! I want to find my family! They are all waiting for me!"
"Uncle Sun, your family..." Ning Yu was about to explain when Uncle Sun rudely interrupted him.
"Don't stop me! If you stop me again, don't blame me for being rude to you!" Grandpa Sun said, pulling out a gleaming dagger from his pocket and pointing it at Ning Yu's chest.
"Grandpa Sun, you..." Ning Yu stared at the gleaming dagger before him, his heart filled with shock and disbelief. He never imagined that the kind and gentle old man would point a dagger at him.
"Don't come any closer! If you come any closer, I'll..." Grandpa Sun's emotions grew more and more agitated, and the dagger in his hand trembled even more violently.
"Grandpa Sun, calm down! Listen to me..." Ning Yu tried to persuade Grandpa Sun, but before he could finish speaking, he saw Grandpa Sun suddenly raise a dagger and stab him.
"Ah!" Ning Yu exclaimed, instinctively trying to dodge, but... "Ah!" Ning Yu exclaimed, instinctively trying to dodge, but Grandpa Sun's movements were too fast; he had no time to react. The sharp dagger sliced through his arm, and blood gushed out, staining his sleeve red.
The intense pain made Ning Yu gasp, but he was more worried about Grandpa Sun's condition. He clutched his wound, staring incredulously at the old man who had completely lost his mind.
"Roar!" Just then, a deafening roar came from outside, like the roar of an ancient beast, which stunned Ning Yu and Grandpa Sun.
"Thump! Thump! Thump!" The heavy footsteps grew closer and closer, accompanied by heavy breathing, as if some enormous creature was walking towards the shelter.
A sense of foreboding rose in Ning Yu's heart. Ignoring the pain in his arm, he quickly ran to the door and looked out through the gaps in the barbed wire.
A gigantic, mutated bear was approaching the shelter. It was over two meters tall, covered in grayish-black fur, and emitted a nauseating stench. Its eyes gleamed crimson, and sharp teeth protruded from its mouth, dripping with sticky saliva, as if it were ready to devour anyone at any moment.
Upon seeing this enormous mutated bear, Ning Yu felt a chill run from his feet to the top of his head. He had seen many mutated creatures, but this was the first time he had ever seen one so huge and menacing.
"Roar!" The mutated bear discovered the shelter's existence and roared again, charging towards it. Its massive body slammed into the barbed wire with a deafening "bang," as if it were about to collapse the entire shelter.
"Ah!" When Grandpa Sun saw the terrifying mutated bear, he turned pale with fright, screamed, and collapsed into a corner.
Ning Yu knew that now was not the time to hold Grandpa Sun accountable; the most urgent task was to deal with the mutated bear. He looked around the shelter, searching for anything that could fight the mutated bear, but found... nothing.
“It’s over…” A feeling of despair rose in Ning Yu’s heart.
Grandpa Sun huddled in a corner, muttering to himself as if praying for divine protection. Ning Yu knew he couldn't rely on anyone else; he could only depend on himself now. He quickly scanned the shelter, hoping to find anything useful. However, besides a simple bed and some basic necessities, there were only some worn-out tools—nothing that could be used to fight the ferocious mutated beast.
The mutated bear roared, slamming its massive body against the barbed wire fence, each impact sending the entire shelter teetering on the brink of collapse. The barbed wire emitted a sickening twisting sound, as if it would be torn apart at any moment. Grandpa Sun trembled with fear, closing his eyes in despair.
With a deafening crash, the mutated bear finally broke through the barbed wire fence and charged into the shelter, covered in mud and reeking of blood. Its shadow instantly enveloped the cramped space, and a suffocating sense of oppression washed over them.
