Chapter 249 A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Despair

As the dust settled, the mutated bear, Black Fiend, gasped in pain, its massive claws hanging limply at its sides, its gaze fixed on Ning Yu and Mu Xue. Just then, a figure emerged from the darkness, slender yet exuding a chilling aura. He slowly approached Black Fiend and whispered something. Black Fiend let out a low growl, seemingly unwilling to accept defeat, but ultimately retreated slowly, disappearing into the darkness.

Ning Yu and Mu Xue remained lying on the ground, not daring to make a sound. The appearance of that person and the retreat of Hei Sha were both unbelievable to them. They held their breath, listening to the sounds around them. Besides the sound of the wind, there was also... a low, mournful wail, coming from afar.

"Wolf." Mu Xue whispered, almost squeezing the word out between her teeth.

Ning Yu's heart sank. Misfortune never comes singly; their situation seemed even more dangerous. He cautiously peeked out, and in the dim light, he saw a group of eerie green eyes gleaming in the darkness, approaching them. They were mutated wolves, and quite a few of them.

The appearance of the mutated bear had exhausted their last strength, and now, facing the wolf pack, they were almost powerless to resist. Despair began to spread, but Ning Yu forced himself to calm down. He had to find a glimmer of hope, even the slightest one.

Just then, the wolf pack suddenly became agitated, their whimpers turning into terrified growls. They retreated, their gazes shifting in another direction. Ning Yu and Mu Xue exchanged a glance, both seeing confusion in each other's eyes. What had caused the wolves such fear?

They slowly raised their heads, following the wolves' gaze. In the depths of darkness, a massive shadow slowly emerged, accompanied by a chilling howl. What was that? Ning Yu couldn't see clearly, but he knew this thing was far more terrifying than the mutated bear and the wolves.

This is an opportunity!

Ning Yu made a quick decision and whispered to Mu Xue, "Let's go!"

Taking advantage of the wolves' distraction, they slowly retreated. Each step was as light as a feather, for fear of startling the wolves. They found a large rock, hid behind it, and temporarily escaped the wolves' sight.

"You're injured." Mu Xue noticed the wound on Ning Yu's arm; the blood had already stained his sleeve.

Ning Yu nodded. During the fight with the mutated bear, his arm had been cut. He tore open his sleeve, revealing a deep wound that exposed bone.

Mu Xue tore strips of cloth from her own clothes and used them to bandage Ning Yu's wounds. Her movements were gentle, and her eyes were filled with worry.

Ning Yu observed the surrounding environment, searching for possible escape routes. Although the wolf pack was afraid of the new threat, they had not completely dispersed; they lingered not far away, glancing towards the boulder from time to time.

“We…” Mu Xue had just begun to speak when Ning Yu suddenly made a shushing gesture. He had heard something, a faint, unsettling sound… “It’s coming.”

The rough surface of the boulder hurt Ning Yu, but he dared not move an inch. The wolves' green eyes flickered like will-o'-the-wisps in the darkness, each flash feeling like a sharp blade slicing through his nerves. The fear brought by the new threat temporarily distracted the wolves, but this was only a brief respite; he knew they would return sooner or later.

"We must leave here," Ning Yu said in a low, hoarse voice.

Mu Xue nodded, her gaze falling on his bandaged arm. "Your injury..."

"It's alright," Ning Yu gritted her teeth. "I can still hold on."

He looked around, his gaze settling on a patch of shadow beside the boulder. Some low-lying plants grew there, shimmering faintly in the dim light. "That's..." Ning Yu's heart skipped a beat; he recognized the plants—"Starlight Grass," a herb that mutated after the nuclear war, possessing extremely powerful restorative properties.

"I'll go take a look." Ning Yu gestured to Mu Xue, then carefully moved his body, trying not to make any noise.

Mu Xue stared intently at him, her eyes filled with worry. She knew Ning Yu's injuries were severe, making it difficult for him to move, and there were wolves lurking around, ready to pounce at any moment; a single misstep could lead to utter destruction.

Ning Yu crawled forward, his body pressed close to the ground, like a cheetah lurking in the darkness. He tried to avoid dry branches and pebbles to avoid making a sound. The low growls of the wolf pack were not far away, like death knells, keeping his nerves on edge.

Finally, he approached the Starlight Grass. A faint glow illuminated his pale face and the glimmer of hope in his eyes. He carefully plucked a few Starlight Grasses, then slowly retreated behind the boulder.

"This is Starlight Grass, it can help us restore our strength." Ning Yu handed the Starlight Grass to Mu Xue, "Eat it quickly."

Mu Xue took the Starlight Grass and chewed it without hesitation. A faint fragrance filled her mouth, accompanied by a warm current flowing into her limbs. She felt her tired body regain its strength.

Ning Yu also ate a few Starlight Grasses, and his strength gradually returned. He knew that this was only a temporary relief, and they had to find a way to escape as soon as possible.

"There seems to be a cave over there," Mu Xue said, pointing to the shadow on the other side of the boulder.

Ning Yu followed her gaze and indeed saw a dark hole, hidden in the darkness.

"Perhaps we can hide for a while," Ning Yu said in a low voice.

They moved cautiously again, approaching the cave. The low growls of the wolves grew closer; they seemed to have overcome their fear of the new threat and were now focusing their attention back on Ning Yu and Mu Xue.

Just as they were about to reach the cave entrance, Ning Yu suddenly stopped. He sensed a dangerous aura approaching, an aura even more dangerous than that of a pack of wolves.
