Chapter 4 Seeking Refuge, Crisis Unresolved

"Where is this place?" Widow Li's voice rose a few octaves with doubt. She hesitated and stopped, not daring to rush through the iron gate.

Ning Yu didn't answer. He crouched down and quickly walked in, surveying his surroundings in the dim light. It was an abandoned subway station, the air thick with the smell of dampness and decay. Large tiles had fallen off the walls, revealing the mottled surface, and several rusty rails stretched into the darkness, disappearing into the distance.

Although dilapidated, the place had the advantage of being spacious and having only one entrance, making it easy to defend and difficult to attack—truly a good refuge. Ning Yu secretly rejoiced at his luck. He glanced back and saw Widow Li peeking inside.

"What exactly do you want?" Widow Li asked, mustering her courage, instinctively feeling a sense of unease.

Ning Yu ignored her, picked up a broken brick from the ground, and threw it forcefully into the depths of the subway station. The brick bounced a few times on the ground, making a dull thud that echoed in the empty platform.

"Come out!" Ning Yu shouted at the air. "I know you're here!"

His voice echoed in the empty subway station, but there was no response. Widow Li was startled by his sudden action and instinctively took a few steps back.

"Who...who are you talking to?" Widow Li's voice trembled slightly.

Ning Yu didn't answer. He stared intently into the depths of the subway station, his palms sweating as he gripped the iron bar. He knew he wasn't being overly pessimistic; this abandoned subway station was definitely not as peaceful as it appeared.

"Da, da, da..."

A soft footstep came from deep within the subway station, sounding exceptionally clear in the silence. Widow Li's expression changed, and she instinctively tried to run away, but Ning Yu grabbed her arm.

"Don't make a sound!" Ning Yu said in a low voice, then pulled Widow Li behind a concrete pillar.

The footsteps grew closer, and soon, several figures came into Ning Yu's view. It was a small group of about ten people, led by a burly middle-aged man who held a homemade spear and wore a wary expression.

"Captain Chen, it looks like someone has been here before," a thin man in the group said, pointing to the bricks on the ground.

The man called Captain Chen nodded. He walked to the cement pillar, his sharp eyes scanning the surroundings. Finally, his gaze fell on the place where Ning Yu and Widow Li were hiding.

"Come out, I can see you," Captain Chen said in a deep voice.

Ning Yu knew he couldn't avoid it any longer, so he pulled Widow Li out from behind the concrete pillar.

"Who are you people?" Captain Chen looked Ning Yu and Widow Li up and down, a hint of wariness flashing in his eyes.

"We..." Ning Yu was about to explain when Captain Chen rudely interrupted him.

"We found this place first, you'd better look for another spot," Captain Chen said firmly.

"What?"

"What?" Ning Yu frowned, not expecting the other party to be so domineering. He looked around. Although the abandoned subway station was dilapidated, it was spacious enough to accommodate dozens of people, so there was no shortage of space.

"Brother," Ning Yu suppressed his displeasure and tried to speak in a calm tone, "I found this place first, and I'm just one person; I also need this place to survive."

Captain Chen sneered, sizing Ning Yu up and down with contempt and disdain in his eyes. "Kid, I advise you not to refuse a toast only to be forced to drink a forfeit!" he said gruffly. "There are so many of us in the team, and we all need a safe place to stay. You're taking up such a large space by yourself; aren't you being incredibly ungrateful?"

"That's right, if you know what's good for you, get lost!" A thin man in the group chimed in, holding a rusty iron rod in his hand, pointing it at Ning Yu, his eyes full of ferocity.

Ning Yu was burning with anger, but he knew it was not the right time to fight head-on. The enemy outnumbered him, and he was alone; a direct confrontation would only lead to his defeat. His eyes darted around, and a plan came to him.

“Alright,” Ning Yu said with a sigh, feigning helplessness, “Since you need this place, I won’t force you. I’ll leave now.”

Captain Chen's face showed a smug look. He waved his hand, signaling his men to make way. Ning Yu lowered his head, pretending to be lost and dejected, and slowly walked out of the subway station.

"Wait!" Captain Chen suddenly called out to Ning Yu. He walked up to Ning Yu, extended his palm, and said, "Leave your supplies here."

Ning Yu suddenly raised his head, a cold glint flashing in his eyes. He stared coldly at Captain Chen without saying a word.

"What? You want to renege on your debt?" Captain Chen's face darkened, and the men behind him immediately surrounded him, each with a fierce look on their faces, their weapons gleaming coldly.

"I was just thinking," Ning Yu said with a cold smile, "what gives you the right?"

Before he finished speaking, Ning Yu flashed out like a cheetah, grabbed the thin man closest to him and shielded him in front of him, while simultaneously smashing the iron rod in his hand hard at another man who was trying to get closer.

"Bang!"

With a muffled thud, the iron rod struck the man's shoulder. The man screamed and fell to the ground, clutching his shoulder and groaning in pain.

"You're asking for death!" Captain Chen roared, raising his spear to stab Ning Yu.

Ning Yu was prepared; he dodged the spear attack by sidestepping and punched Captain Chen in the chest with his backhand. Captain Chen grunted and staggered back a few steps.

Chaos erupted inside the subway station as Captain Chen's men rushed towards Ning Yu, attempting to subdue him. Ning Yu fought and retreated, using the complex layout of the subway station to maneuver around the crowd and avoid direct confrontation.
