Yun Ling, who had been surviving in the apocalypse, accidentally transmigrated into the youngest daughter of the ancient Yun family. The family had few men, with only her father and crippled grandp...
Seeing Pei Lin's reaction, Yun Ling couldn't help but harbor wicked thoughts. She put down the wooden axe, placed her hands on Pei Lin's head and chin respectively, and then, keeping her distance, looked at the cabinet shelf, nodded, and said thoughtfully:
"To be honest, the size is still just right."
Pei Lin grabbed Yun Ling's hair by the hair, slightly displeased.
"Try talking nonsense again."
"Let go. When are you going to change your habit of pulling other people's hair when you're angry?"
"I'll take it, I'll take it."
Pei Lin said this, but his hand still obediently moved from Yun Ling's hair to the back of Yun Ling's collar.
Yunling had no way to deal with the child's temperament, so she just let him be.
"Tell me, what exactly do you use this cabinet for?"
"Are you even a son? Why are you so gossipy and incessantly chattering, just like a woman haggling over a price in the market?"
Pei Lin was speechless at Yun Ling's words. He wanted to pull her hair again, but fearing her resentment, he simply tugged at the back of her collar.
"Tell me about it. If you do, I'll treat you to dinner tonight."
"Having a meal?"
"Yes, I suppose you rarely visit the city's night markets. They're so lively and have all sorts of delicious food."
The mere mention of night markets seemed to conjure up the aroma of fried rice. She felt that sometimes, the fried rice from roadside stalls was even more delicious than the abalone, sea cucumber, and shark fin in fancy restaurants. However, the fact that this guy was inviting her to dinner was like the sun rising in the west; she wondered what kind of wicked scheme he was up to.
"I'm not going."
Yunling's resolute decision shocked Pei Lin. He had only intended to invite her to dinner to deepen their relationship, so why was she so wary? He felt truly wronged.
"Hey, you really don't want to go? There's so much delicious food there! There's roasted mutton, wild duck, pork offal, and pig intestines. And since it's hot right now, there are all sorts of cold dishes and iced drinks, mainly to whet the appetite and aid digestion. The other day I had a bowl of sour and spicy noodles, and the taste was absolutely wonderful."
Yunling had been craving that fried rice, and now, hearing Pei Lin talking about such mouthwatering things, her muscles naturally softened.
"Alright, alright, since it's your treat, I might as well go. But it's a deal, you can't go back on your word just because I ordered too much."
Pei Lin was overjoyed upon hearing this. He would never hesitate to spend money; even if Yun Ling asked him to buy everything in the city, he would be willing.
“I’m not like you, you little bug, always plotting something bad. But now you can tell me what this cabinet is for.”
Yunling was very thirsty and intended to take a sip of the fragrant drink before speaking to Pei Lin, but she noticed that the pot of fragrant drink beside her had already been destroyed by Pei Lin. She gave him a disgruntled look and said:
"I'm currently in the business of selling things like briefs, aren't I? We have a network at the matchmaking corner."
"Network? What network?"
Yunling thought that perhaps this person was from Ren'an Hall and might not understand these kinds of business matters, so she became more patient and explained:
"This internet is a trendy item in the city. Anyone who wants to buy our products can place an order online, and someone will deliver the order to me. Initially, it was delivered to the Yun family, but now that this shop is under my control, it's naturally cheaper to deliver it here."
Pei Lin found this intriguing.
"So this cabinet is for storing those things?"
"Yes, I divided them into compartments, and then I marked each compartment with a small number. Each compartment with a number corresponds to a single sheet, making it convenient to take them out. Even if there are handovers in between, we can still follow the numbers."
"You certainly have a lot of clever ideas."
Pei Lin glanced towards the backyard, then looked outside the shop and continued:
"But since there are mostly young women here, even if there is a music hall next door, it won't be of much help in preventing theft or trouble. You should be careful."
“I can think of that. I plan to split the shop door in two, make one half a door and the other half a small window. The door can be opened and closed quickly during the day, leaving only one window open. At night, the window can be closed as well.”
Since Yunling said that, Pei Lin naturally couldn't say anything more. Besides, Yunling didn't live in the shop often, so if something bad happened, it wouldn't hurt her. Therefore, he didn't want to gossip.
Pei Lin simply nodded and lent a hand to help Yun Ling assemble the cabinet.
Summer days are long, and even after the street lanterns are lit, the sky is still bright. Yunling wanted to go back to the shop and keep busy until it was completely dark, as she felt that shopping would be more interesting then.
However, Pei Lin caught her in her retreating motion. Fearing she might change her mind and refuse to dine with him, he tightened his grip on her arm.
What are you doing?
"I was just thinking of waiting until it got dark before I went shopping."
"Now that you're out here, you should settle down. Besides, you're the boss now, how can you not give your subordinates a break? You're really no good."
"You're the one who's a 'thing,' your whole family are 'things.'"
Pei Lin was holding Yun Ling's arm, his hand not far from hers. He secretly thought of it as holding her hand, which made him feel happy, and he didn't mind Yun Ling's little temper.
“When I worked at Ren'an Hall, it was fine when patients came to see me, but if there weren’t any, I had to study medical books and dry herbs. It was extremely boring. I wanted to catch my breath for a long time, but the boss’s eyes were as sharp as a golden eagle flying in the sky, forcing me to keep busy with this and that without daring to take a breath.”
"I remember the happiest day was when there were very few patients and the landlord was not there. I moved a recliner to the yard and sat in the sun. I felt extremely relaxed and ate two extra bowls of rice for dinner that night."
Yunling felt a pang of emotion upon hearing Pei Lin's words. She had never considered herself an employer; she only saw Tang Ling and the others as business partners, working together on projects.
Yunling hadn't considered whether Tang Ling and the others thought that way. Perhaps they saw her as their boss, or perhaps they, like Pei Lin, hoped she would leave so they could enjoy a moment of leisure amidst their busy schedules. Who knows?
"Just let them off the hook. You have no idea how miserable it is to have nothing to do but still have to find something to do and wait until the workday ends."
Yunling found this somewhat comical, yet not without merit, and nodded in response:
"Since we're already out, let's not go back."
Pei Lin suddenly felt that it wasn't so bad to just talk to the person in front of him properly, discussing things together.
