Ten years in Huating have been turbulent, with behind-the-scenes capital always omnipresent. Beneath the calm surface, undercurrents always churn; lights flicker on and off, and human affairs ebb a...
In the current dormitory area, apart from families like theirs with students taking exams, most of the middle-aged and young employees have moved away, leaving behind mostly elderly people.
Reaching the stairwell, Qin Suisui picked up her suitcase and headed upstairs. The suitcase wasn't heavy, and she carried it with relative ease.
"Sui Sui, why are you back today?"
Zeng Zhaoxia, carrying a trash bag, hadn't taken two steps down when she saw Sui Sui carrying her luggage upstairs, and she looked pleasantly surprised.
"Aunt Zeng!"
As Qin Suisui climbed the stairs, she ran into Zeng's mother on the second floor. Her mother and Zeng's mother had the best relationship before she passed away.
Later, my father remarried, and the two families had less and less contact.
Since Qin Suisui went to university, the two families have basically only exchanged nods of acquaintance for the past few years.
She tilted her head back and smiled brightly.
"Aunt Zeng, I graduated this year."
Zeng Zhaoxia put down the trash in her hand, strode down a few steps, and hugged her tightly.
Her eyes reddened as she patted Qin Suisui's back forcefully.
“You silly girl, you didn’t even come back for Chinese New Year last year. You had a phone number but didn’t tell your mother. I asked your father for your phone number, but that bastard of a father stammered and didn’t give it to me no matter how many times I asked.”
As always, Zeng's mother's arms were warm and comfortable.
"Aunt Zeng, I miss you so much!"
Qin Suisui put down her suitcase, wrapped her arms around her, and rested her head on her shoulder.
Zeng Zhaoxia wiped her eyelids with the back of her hand, her voice slightly nasal. She lifted her suitcase with one hand and half-embraced Qin Suisui.
"Sui Sui, come on, I'll take you home. Your dad and his family of three haven't been back for long."
Qin Suisui quickly reached out to stop her: "Aunt Zeng, I'll carry the luggage. You know I've always been strong since I was little."
"Smack!"
Zeng Zhaoxia gently slapped her hand away and gave her a reproachful look.
"Your mediocre skills were learned from your father, Qi. Do you think I don't know your own limitations?"
She easily lifted Qin Suisui's suitcase and pulled Suisui up to the fourth floor.
Seeing this, Qin Suisui smiled and took Zeng's mother's arm to follow her upstairs.
