Chapter 198 The Flesh and Blood Mill (Part 2)

The smell of blood and corpses, carried by the strong wind, guided the monsters in the direction of their attack.

After the initial shock, Huggins gradually regained his composure. He calmed himself down and began to observe the situation on the battlefield as the horde of war beasts drew closer.

Seven bat-like birds, four poisonous iron crocodiles, and eleven giant wolves with bone spikes—these barbarian war beasts were unlike any of the mutated wild animals he had seen on the northern border in terms of appearance, size, and fighting prowess. To make a comparison was like putting a lion and a wildcat together.

When did the barbarians acquire such terrifying fighting power?

In terms of advantages and disadvantages, our greatest advantage lies in the strategic location of the fortress. Therefore, the bat-like monsters that can fly over the city walls are the highest priority targets for attack.

From Harkins's "Dragonbone," the sound of rattlesnakes swishing their tails echoed, and commands reverberated through the sonic vibrations into the minds of every commander: "Heavy infantry, advance to form a shield wall! Longbowmen and crossbowmen, fire from behind your shields! Lancers, dismount and escort the snipers! Prioritize targeting the aerial monsters! Shrink formation and ensure mutual support between battle groups!"

The horde of war beasts drew ever closer, with bat-birds charging ahead using their flight abilities, bone-spiked giant wolves sprinting through the middle, and the cumbersome, poisonous iron crocodiles bringing up the rear.

Huggins calculated the distance between the strange bird and the fortress, and once the latter was within firing range, he issued the order for a long-range attack.

The longbow and powerful crossbow, combined with the advantage of a tailwind, propelled the arrows, imbued with immense kinetic energy, through the air, piercing the strange birds' bodies like a torrential rain. Three birds were immediately shot down from the sky, falling to the ground with mournful cries.

The four survivors dodged two waves of aerial attacks with their agile aerial maneuvering and flew to the top of the city wall. They first used a dive attack to try to attack the weakly protected archers in the back row.

Thanks to their dense formation and mutual support, the swooping attack of the four strange birds did not cause many casualties; only one unlucky soldier was caught and thrown off the city wall. Meanwhile, the Knights of Twilight, relying on their spears and arrows, managed to bring only two of the strange birds back into the air.

The remaining pair of strange birds no longer approached the city walls, but instead circled the fortress, occasionally spewing blobs of green acid into the soldiers' formation. The Inheritor sniper's precise strike sealed the fate of the last two bat-like birds.

Eleven giant bone-spiked wolves followed closely behind the city walls. These monsters, covered in sharp bone spiked bodies, were three meters long, and their claws and teeth were like steel blades, easily piercing into the stone walls. Their actions surprised everyone; these monsters, using their four claws, began to climb the city walls.

Under the commander's lead, the heavy infantry began their attack. They went to the battlements and hurled the stones and logs they had prepared. Longbowmen and crossbowmen climbed the two towers and used the towering arrow towers to launch crossfire at the bone-spiked wolves on the city walls.

One mutated beast after another fell beneath the city walls, but three lucky ones managed to scale the top using their agility and nimble movements. These three escaped giant bone-spiked wolves inflicted considerable casualties on the Twilight Knights.

The giant wolf stood on the city wall, howled to the sky, and then violently shook its body. The bone spikes all over its body detached one by one, like hundreds of long swords shooting in all directions.

Screams echoed from the city walls as heavy infantrymen fell in droves as bone spikes pierced their shields, helmets, and chests. The archers on the flanks, fearing friendly fire, ceased their attack, with only the Inheritor snipers continuing to provide fire support to the heavy infantry.

Melee inheritors and elemental inheritors rushed to the front line. The former used their "metal skin" and "regeneration" abilities to directly resist the attacks of the bone spike giant wolf, while the latter used "fire breath," "freeze," and "sonic shock" to provide support attacks. The heavy infantry put down their longswords and flails and other short weapons, and raised chevaux-de-frise or siege lances to provide mid-range support.

Under the combined attack of multiple squads, the four bone-spiky giant wolves, covered in wounds, fled to the edge of the city wall, where they were strangled and thrown off the wall.

Now only the last monster remains—four poisonous iron crocodiles.

The crossbows fired from the arrow towers barely caused any damage to these large, mutated crocodiles covered in steel armor; apart from the clanging sounds, there were only faint, negligible traces.

The Poison Gas Iron Crocodiles cannot fly or climb walls, but these monsters, whose every step is like a small earthquake, pose a greater threat to the entire fortress. They use the iron horns on their heads and their huge bodies to repeatedly ram the fortress gates.

Each impact caused such a tremor that even the soldiers on the city wall could not stand and almost fell over.

Huggins issued orders to the Knights, and the soldiers, led by their commander, used falling rocks, rolling logs, and javelins, but still could not inflict any real damage on these massive siege beasts.

Seeing this and feeling anxious, Huggins lowered the iron cover of his helmet, stepped down from the city wall, and came to the midst of the knights who were fully armed and ready to go. He raised his arms and shouted, "Knights, mount up! Let us use our lances and our warhorses to prove our bravery and fearlessness to the Father and the Son!"

As the city gate winch slowly turned, the massive iron gate slowly opened. The inheritor knights gripped their lances and shields tightly, while their exotic warhorses excitedly pawed the ground and neighed softly.

The terrifying face of the monster outside the city gate gradually appeared before everyone.
