Cotton's body was torn to pieces and scattered on the ground. The sounds of the giant wolves gnawing on flesh and crushing bones echoed in the arena, sending chills down everyone's spines.
Someone recognized the true nature of these monsters—war beasts.
Panic spread like wildfire.
Terrified audience members shouted and screamed as they rose from their seats and scrambled to escape to the exits at the back.
As for the gladiators in the arena, they were only a dozen meters away from the wolf pack and were already terrified by the bloody scene before them.
"Cunning Fox" Besen was the first to react. He whispered to the people around him, "Don't make any noise. While these war beasts aren't paying attention to us, slowly retreat."
The crowd did as instructed and retreated. Before they had gone a few steps, one of them, unable to bear the horrific sight before him, turned around and ran away.
A giant, alert wolf noticed the unusual sight before it, raised its head to look at its prey not far away, and let out a long howl. The other monsters stopped eating and turned their heads toward the gladiator.
"Oh, damn it!" Seeing that the situation was getting out of control, Bessen turned and ran.
As he ran, he pulled out several throwing knives from his pocket and hurled them without hesitation. The targets were not the giant wolf behind him, but the thighs or insteps of the gladiators around him. He used the lives of his companions to buy himself time to escape.
Todra led Deirdre to the wall at the end of the arena. In front of them was a towering wall, and behind them, the wolf pack was getting closer and closer.
Looking at the trembling woman beside him, Todd anxiously looked around, with only one thought in his mind: what should he do next?
Screams echoed from afar as several more gladiators were caught by the giant wolves and instantly torn to pieces.
Just when he was on the verge of life and death, an item suddenly appeared in his line of sight and caught Todd's eye.
The iron chain that was removed from the winch.
"Stay here and wait for me to come back!" Todd left Deirdre behind and ran quickly toward the chains in the center of the arena.
With a roll on the ground, Todd slung the chains over his shoulder and began running at full speed back to Deirdre's side.
Todd tied one end of the chain into a slipknot, aimed it at the iron railing at the top of the wall, and threw it up with force.
The gladiators who fled the giant wolf all perished in its jaws, leaving only "The Cunning Fox" Bessen, still running for his life.
Seeing Todd take the chain, Bessen instantly understood his plan, changed direction, and fled in their direction.
Just as Bessen was a dozen steps away from Todd, seeing that the latter had already fastened the chains, a wicked glint flashed in Bessen's eyes. He took out three throwing knives and threw them forward.
The throwing knife traced a straight line through the air and pierced Todd's back.
Ding ding ding!
Contrary to Bessen's expectations, the throwing knives struck Todd's back with a metallic sound before bouncing off to the ground.
Todd glanced back at Bessen with a cold, unfriendly look that sent chills down the latter's spine and made him dare not act rashly.
Helping Deirdre up, Todd had her climb up the chains first and scale the wall to the stands behind. Then he picked up the sword and shield on his back and climbed up as well. Bessen followed behind him, the last one to climb up the stands.
Looking at the wolf pack pacing and howling below the wall, Deirdre, who had survived the ordeal, asked Todd with joy, "Are we safe?"
To Deirdre's surprise, Todgra grabbed her hand and ran at full speed towards the exit of the stands, shouting, "No! It's too early to say it's safe!"
The facts proved Todd right.
The pack of spiky wolves placed their front paws on the wall, their sharp, blade-like claws piercing into the stone, causing the beasts to begin climbing up the wall.
As early as the end of the Battle of Northern Stone, Huggins gave a detailed report to Todd on the war beasts of the northern barbarians, with particular emphasis on the giant wolf that could climb walls.
Seeing that the giant wolf would soon be able to climb onto the stands, Todra pulled Deirdre along, with "Cunning Fox" Bessen following behind, and the three of them ran together toward the exit of the passageway at the back of the stands.
When they finally arrived at the exit of the stands, the three of them were stunned by what they saw.
People, people everywhere.
Those audience members who should have fled the venue were all stuck here. The narrow passageways and the small square in front of the gate were packed with people, numbering at least a thousand.
Amidst the noise and cries, Bessen pushed through the crowd, yelling, "Are you all crazy? Why aren't you running away?!"
Someone pointed desperately to the gate, and only then did Bessen realize that the gate to the stands had been sealed off long ago after the audience entered.
This also means that the thousands of people in this confined space will soon become food for the wolves.
"Those war beasts have already climbed onto the stands." Queen Maeve looked down at Conchierber and said in a drawn-out tone, "The doors to the stands are still closed. Are you still not going to order them opened?"
Conchierber's eyes were bloodshot, like a wounded wild beast. He gulped down a large mouthful of red wine without uttering a word.
"That gladiator and his lover may die in the jaws of wolves, but many other civilians will also die. Does that matter?"
"There will always be sacrifices..."
Conchierber's almost heartless words drew a disdainful look from Maeve.
In front of the grandstand gate, people pounded on the door, and the cries for help, pleas, and prayers of men, women, the elderly, and children mingled together, clearly audible even from hundreds of meters away.
