Chapter 291 The Great Escape (Part 7)

After saying this, Todd sent the others out of the soul space.

Their consciousness returned to the warehouse on the second basement level. Ackerman and Kasper exchanged a glance and began to plan their escape.

Abandoning the nearby tunnel, the two found dozens of handcarts used to transport corpses in the adjacent morgue.

The first thing they did was use the artificial blood and weapon wreckage they had on hand to disguise some of the gladiators as corpses, placing them on the bottom of the carts. Then they laid a layer of dry grass on top, and placed some rotting corpses from the morgue on top of these people as cover. Finally, they laid a mat made of cattails on each cart.

The second thing was to go to the warehouse, rummage through the chests and cabinets to find a pile of slave clothes, and have Boyle's people put them on, disguising these men, women and children as slaves transporting corpses.

As for the remaining gladiators, they dressed up as arena guards and pretended to be in charge of watching over and supervising the slaves.

As for Ackerman himself, he found a gladiator uniform and transformed himself into the corpse collector of the "Red Circle".

Ackerman directed the carts filled with 'corpses' from the abandoned ramp on the second basement level all the way to the transport corridor behind the arena.

Before they had gone more than a few steps, a group of soldiers suddenly blocked the convoy.

The Ulster officer at the head of the group, looking at the massive procession of corpses before him, frowned and roared at the leader, Ackerman, "What's going on? Why are there so many corpses today?!"

Ackerman, sporting a fake mustache, cursed inwardly, "How can there be an army guarding a place like this?" But on his face, he wore a fawning smile, bowed, and walked up to the army officer, respectfully saying, "Sir, you don't know, the King personally promised freedom today, so all those gladiators went berserk! The number of dead is several times higher than usual! Add to that the corpses that hadn't been transported out in time, and the morgue is overflowing!"

The officer glanced at Ackerman, snorted, walked to a cart, covered his nose, and used his sword sheath to lift a corner of the mat. The highly decomposed corpse and the white, wriggling maggots revealed inside made him take two steps back. With a look of disgust, he shouted, "Take all these corpses away! Get out of here!"

Ackerman replied with a fawning smile, "Yes, sir, we'll be on our way!"

Just as Ackerman was about to tell the others to move forward, the army officer suddenly walked up behind him and slapped him hard on the shoulder with his sword sheath: "Wait! You stop right there!"

Standing next to the former, Casper's eyes flashed with a sharp, fierce light as he quietly reached his hand under the cart.

Ackerman shook his head slightly at his companion, then turned around with a beaming smile and said, "Sir, is there anything else you need?"

The Ulster officer slapped his cheek with his sword sheath: "You bastard! Have you forgotten the rules?!"

Ackerman was taken aback at first, then suddenly realized what was going on and pulled out a small bag of coins from his pocket, which he presented to the officer with both hands.

The officer weighed the money pouch and grumbled, "Don't think I'm clueless just because I'm new here. Collecting corpses is a lucrative job! Gold teeth, heirloom pendants, women's hair—those are all hot commodities!"

Ackerman hurriedly apologized repeatedly, then took out a small bag of coins from his pocket, stuffed it into the officer's arms, raised his eyebrows and chuckled, "Sir, the previous bag was the proper thing to do, this bag is a token of my respect for you."

The officer smiled and accepted the money pouch, patted Ackerman on the back, and said knowingly, "I accept your respect."

For the rest of the journey, the convoy passed through checkpoints without incident, eventually arriving in the countryside outside the city.

The gladiators climbed out of the hearse and, together with Boyle's people, gazed at the long-lost blue sky and green fields, fully enjoying the happiness and joy that freedom brought.

Some people knelt on both knees, praising the names of the ancient gods and kissing the soil beneath their feet; others looked up at the sky, twisting their limbs like madmen.

"Get up, everyone!" Tears of joy still lingered in Ackerman's eyes, but he kept in mind the task Todd had just given him in the soul space: "We must disguise ourselves as a slave-catching team and get on the road as soon as possible!"

Someone asked him, "Are we heading south next?"

Ackerman and Kasper exchanged glances, burst into laughter, and gave everyone an unexpected answer: "No, we're heading west, our destination is the largest port city in the Kingdom of Ulster—Ancient Gu City!"
