An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Todd, seated on the throne in the audience hall, looked intently at the report in his hand and said without looking up, "You've conducted this soul experiment nearly seventy times?"
Sitting in the chair, Wayne had changed out of his usual dirty robe and was clearly dressed neatly. He respectfully addressed Todd, saying, "Your Majesty, after you left Twilight University last time, I spent three days organizing all the data at hand. Due to the length limitations of the report, you have only seen a portion of all the experiments."
Todd flipped through the report in his hand and gestured to Huggins beside him. A moment later, two cups of warm mead, along with a plate of fried dough sticks, were placed in front of Terrence and Wayne.
“Your subjects include the elderly and children, as well as men and women,” Todd paused for a moment, then continued, “and all sorts of animals.”
Wayne nodded and said, "Yes, in order to compare whether there are differences and changes in the souls of different creatures, I conducted at least ten experiments on each creature to ensure that the data error is minimized."
Todd flipped to the last page of the report, read it three times, and finally said, "Your conclusion is really interesting."
Wayne rubbed his palms together excitedly and said, "I believe that at the moment of death, some kind of substance must be released, and perhaps that is the essence of the soul."
Todd read the original report word by word: "This substance is invisible and intangible. It can trigger certain microparticles to undergo changes in mass and energy, and in a very short time, it can escape from an underground room several meters deep and disappear in a fixed direction."
Terence took a sip of mead and couldn't help but exclaim, "This is utterly a fantasy!"
Wayne ignored the old scholar's sarcasm and said seriously, "In my experiments, I found that the more intelligent a creature is, the greater the changes in mass and energy it causes at the time of death. For example, the old man in the immigrant area three years ago, at the moment of his death, his body weight suddenly decreased by three grams, and the magnetic field indicator also showed a deviation of ±1.5."
Terence closed his eyes and said with a wry smile, "The reduction in body weight may be due to the evaporation of water in the body; the deflection of the magnetic field may be due to the metallic material. Your experimental results simply cannot explain the materialization of the soul."
Wayne shook his head vigorously and argued, "At first I also thought it was due to evaporation and metal, but after repeated experiments, I found an increasingly alarming consistency when all the test subjects died."
"The higher the level of education, the older the age at death, and the richer the life experience of an organism, the more weight it loses and the stronger the deflection of its magnetic field at the time of death. Dozens of experiments from the beginning to the present have proven this conclusion. In contrast, when animals die, except for chimpanzees and apes, which are creatures with rudimentary intelligence, other species do not experience changes in mass or magnetic field."
Terence covered his forehead with his hand and said helplessly, "Wayne Dunlop, these things don't make any sense at all."
“Wayne, I find your experiment very interesting.” Todd’s words surprised everyone.
Terence's eyes widened as he looked at Todd, stammering, "Your Majesty, you...you don't actually believe his experimental results are effective, do you...?"
Todd waved his hand: "I didn't acknowledge the results of this experiment; I just found it very interesting."
Wayne straightened up and exclaimed excitedly, "Your Majesty! You mean you support my experiment?!"
To his surprise, Todd gently shook his head.
The king held up Wayne's report and said solemnly, "I invited you two here today not only to confirm the data in the report, but more importantly, to discuss the matter of using humans as experimental subjects."
After hearing Todd's words, Terence immediately agreed: "I don't object to using animals for this experiment, but using humans for this is a bit too much."
Todd's next words left Terrence stunned once again.
"I am not against human experimentation, but it should be distinguished from animal experimentation, and this type of experiment should have strict ethical requirements."
When discussing his experiments, Wayne retorted, "I don't understand the difference between the two. If we look at it from the perspective of biblical teachings, animals and humans are God's children, and there is no difference in the value of their lives. If we judge it by the standard of truth, animals have contributed a lot of data in academic experiments, so why can't humans?"
Upon hearing Wayne's words, Terrence was speechless for a moment. The latter looked at the tall, thin, and frail scholar and kept shaking his head and sighing.
Hearing the two arguing, Todd slowly closed the report, thought for a moment, and said to Wayne, "Have you ever eaten pork?"
"Yes, Your Majesty, I have eaten."
"And what about beef?"
"I've eaten it too."
Todd stared into Wayne's eyes and said emphatically, "So, what about human flesh?"
The latter was stunned, then shook her head and said, "...No...there's never been a Sakura."
Todd leaned forward: "Then let me ask you a different question. If you knew there was a person who loved to eat human flesh, how would you react?"
Wayne frowned, his voice growing louder: "I think I'll curse him, even beat him up, and warn everyone else to stay away from this guy."
"So what would you do if you met someone who loves eating beef?"
"What should I do? I don't think I know anything..."
Todd patted the report and said calmly, "On the path of pursuing truth, using one's own kind as experimental subjects touches upon taboos that do not only stem from religion, but more so from the fears within the human heart."
