Chapter 388 The Battle of Holy Guard City (Part 1)

Having entrusted the task of popularizing superpowers to Emerson, Todd began to focus his attention on the war in the east.

According to feedback from the Knights of Twilight, the Church Alliance has completed its assembly on the border and plans to launch an attack in late autumn.

There were two things about this war that Todd was very concerned about.

First, after Muxi City launched its attack on the Church with the doctrine of "Justification by Faith" and completely severed ties with it, the Church managed to assemble an army from twenty kingdoms in just six months. Such speed and scope of mobilization are unprecedented in the Church's history of external warfare. The only explanation is that the Church had been secretly planning its strategy against Muxi City for a long time, which enabled it to quickly assemble such a massive army.

Secondly, the Church's allied forces launched their attack in late autumn or early winter. From a military perspective, choosing such a time to launch an attack was not a wise choice. The cold weather and snow-covered roads would greatly hinder the morale and logistics of the attacking side. Regarding this second point, after careful consideration and analysis, Todd believed that the Church's decision to take the risk and launch the offensive at this time was entirely due to being thrown off balance by the issue of the Holy Guard throne.

In the Church's original plan, after Sinclair obtained the throne, the Church would regain control of Holy Guard City and include it in the siege of Twilight City. This plan should have been a sure thing.

However, the intervention of the Presbyterian Church, Leoric's ambition, and the appearance of the imposter Feliceld completely disrupted the Church's overall plan and placed someone they never expected—Mary—on the throne of Queen.

Therefore, after careful consideration, the Church decided that taking advantage of the new king's recent rise to power and the instability of his foundation, the only option was to quickly capture Holy Guard City and re-establish the siege of Twilight City.

Having figured these things out, Todd began to focus his attention on the war.

In terms of military strength, the Twilight Knights have three hundred heavily armored knights, all equipped with top-of-the-line gear.

In addition, there are scout successors, sniper successors, and elemental successors. These military forces can all play a significant role in siege warfare.

But the key to the problem lies with the soldiers of Holy Guard City. Those armies originally belonging to different families, although the patriarchs of their respective families had mostly died or been killed in the turmoil, it was hard to guarantee that the other members of these families would not give up and would play both sides in the defense of the city.

Therefore, in Todd's view, whether Queen Mary could firmly grasp these military forces after her accession to the throne might be the key to the outcome of the Battle of St. Acropolis.

Back in the audience room, Todd finished his work and, looking at the darkening sky outside the window, beckoned to Huggins and asked, "Based on the results of the last meeting, the Church Alliance forces should arrive at the battlefield in Holy Guard City today."

Huggins nodded and replied, "That's right, Your Majesty."

Todd tapped the table with his finger: "We'll have a meeting with St. Victory City after dinner."

After a simple dinner, Todd pulled out a map of the Holy Guard City's defenses, as well as maps of the surrounding area. After examining them carefully, he opened his Soul Space and summoned Cumberland and Mary inside.

Cumberland, dressed in knight's armor and holding his helmet in his arms, bowed to the king upon seeing him, then surveyed the room with his gaze before remaining silent.

Mary, dressed in women's chainmail, merely nodded indifferently upon seeing Todd.

Todd sat in a chair in the research institute's conference room, gesturing for the two to sit down. He then pulled Huggins into his soul space and asked, "What's the situation on the battlefield?"

Cumberland didn't speak, but instead turned on the 3D projector and played out his memory fragments.

In the 3D holographic movie, the sky over Moon Creek Plain is gloomy, and the cold autumn wind blows the grass and branches everywhere.

A distant, melodious drumbeat drifted from afar.

At first, only a few dozen fully armed knights appeared in sight; soon, thousands of cavalrymen crossed the hill and arrived on the plains near the Holy Guard City.

Looking at the cavalrymen in the picture, each carrying a different banner, Todd said with a serious expression, "Are these all troops of the Church Alliance?"

“The Kingdom of Hilka, the Duchy of Fenton, the Kingdom of Slobi, the Kingdom of Morroelic…” Cumberland looked at the flags in the picture and counted them one by one. Finally, he sighed and said, “I’ve forgotten how many years it has been since I’ve seen such a grand spectacle.”

As the cavalry began to scout around the battlefield, the enemy's infantry corps slowly came into view of the defenders.

Nearly a hundred formations, each carrying a flag from a different kingdom, entered the battlefield in turn.

At a glance, the mountains and fields were filled with enemies; the towering heads had completely covered the grassland, and the fierce drumming had drowned out the whistling wind.

Todd stared in surprise at the enemy army and said hesitantly, "I originally thought that the enemy's troop numbers were somewhat exaggerated, but it seems that I was wrong."

Cumberland pointed to the formation in the picture and said to Todd, "This square formation is Adran's spearmen, and this one is Milanco's longbowmen... Although the enemy's total strength is said to be 15,000, which seems like a lot, if you look closely at the flags and equipment of the formation, you can find that a large part of them are peasant soldiers responsible for logistics and miscellaneous tasks."

Todd asked Cumberland, "If we take away the peasant soldiers and other non-combatants, how many enemy troops are left?"

“There are probably still about ten thousand men left.” Cumberland shrugged. “I admit, that number still sounds huge, but the enemy’s weaknesses are also evident in their formation.”
