"You mean Myris?!"
Realizing what was happening, Todd stood up from his chair and raised his voice by three points.
Seeing Todd's expression, Rachel sighed almost imperceptibly: "The Alien Society spotted them at the back gate of the Governor's Mansion..."
Todd recalled the kind old monk and his time in the monastery, and he stood there motionless as if in a trance.
Rachel leaned closer to him and whispered, “I must warn you, Bone is a very dangerous and insane man, and Myriel, who is with him, has certainly been influenced by him.”
Todd asked Rachel, "Are you saying that Myris has become dangerous and unpredictable?"
"Over the years, there have been rumors that, under Saladin's command, Throat Bone has been doing some 'dirty work' that no one else is willing to do. For example, helping the empire eliminate rebels and purging the old noble forces. Since Myris is with him, he is naturally involved in these tasks as well."
Todd asked curiously, "But the question is, how did Myris end up with him? I've never been able to understand why this old man suddenly abandoned everything at the monastery, leaving without saying goodbye."
“I don’t know the specific reason either,” Rachel said in a low voice. “In the past, the Elders’ Council sent people to infiltrate the military camp of the throat bone in the hope of finding out some intelligence, but all the people sent never came back.”
Todd picked up his robe from the chair, dressed himself, pulled down his hood, and said to Rachel, “Tell me where the governor’s mansion is? I want to see it.”
Rachel looked at him with concern: "I'll go with you."
"No, you stay here and protect those ancient notes. I assure you, nothing will happen to me."
After saying this, Todd used his "transformation" ability to change his appearance and even his voice was completely different from usual.
Rachel pulled a map from her sleeve and pointed out the location of the target to Todd, then reminded him again, "Remember! If anything goes wrong, you must leave this city immediately. Don't worry about me; I have a way to leave safely."
Todd pulled down his hat brim, nodded to Rachel, and left the tavern.
Walking down the streets of Anuda, Todd followed the map Rachel had given him and headed toward the port governor's mansion.
The closer you get to the destination, the more guards you'll encounter along the way.
Upon arriving at the governor's mansion, hundreds of imperial guards surrounded the entire residence, repeatedly questioning and searching every passerby.
Todd glanced around from a distance and, finding the defenses too tight, abandoned his plan to sneak in and instead returned to the tavern the way he came.
Just then, an old voice rang out behind Todd: "You shouldn't have come here."
Todd turned around, and Myris's familiar face appeared before him.
However, compared to the past, the old man had become so thin that he was unrecognizable, his face withered and skeletal. Most alarmingly, his eyes had turned completely white.
Todd, prepared to challenge him at any moment, tentatively asked, "Do you know me?"
Myris stroked Todd's head and suddenly laughed: "My ability allows me to see the colors of souls, and your soul is the brightest of all... Todd Fisher."
Todd conjured a dragon shape with one hand from his sleeve, and waved the other in front of Myris's eyes: "Your eyes?"
"How ironic that I once healed your eyes with these very hands. But God, to punish my sins, took away my sight and forced me to face the ugliest things in the world."
Recalling the scene at the monastery where Master Myris healed his eyes, Todd's voice became hoarse: "Master Myris, come with me, let's go home, there are many people waiting for you there... Karin, Edgar, little Jerry..."
Mylis shook his head: "Todd, I have fallen into the clutches of evil and have forever lost God's grace. Don't let my footprints defile that sacred land. This is a place of right and wrong; you should leave as soon as possible."
Todd whispered, "You were my first teacher. Without you, I wouldn't even have had the chance to live... No matter what you become, the door of God will always be open to you..."
A look of emotion and guilt crossed Myris's face. He opened his mouth as if to say something, but nothing came out.
Just then, an Imperial Guard commander approached Myris and said, "Sir, the Caliph is looking for you."
When he walked up to Myris, he immediately looked at Todd suspiciously and asked, "I don't recognize this person. Who is he?"
Mylis quietly tugged at Ratold's sleeve, signaling him to be quiet: "He's a scholar from the North, and also a friend of mine. He came specifically to discuss academic matters with me. Unfortunately, he has to go back now..."
"A scholar from the north?" The captain of the guard stared at Todd and said with a smile, "That's perfect. The Caliph is just about to discuss academic matters with you. I don't think His Majesty the Emperor would mind having one more person."
Just as Myriel was about to say something more, the captain of the guard summoned soldiers without warning, signaling Myriel and Todd to go inside as soon as possible.
Walking in the garden of the governor's mansion, Myris leaned close to Todd and whispered, "When you meet the emperor later, don't be too reserved, but don't be too casual either. Saladin has always been tolerant of scholars' words and deeds, but that doesn't mean his patience has no limit."
