Chapter 599 The City of Martyrs (Part 3)

Countless believers dressed in grey robes knelt in the Papal Square, loudly reciting hymns of praise.

“It’s so beautiful! I’ve heard so much about the Thecove in the Papal States’ capital, the Terro Sanctuary, that even the best poets couldn’t describe its magnificence with words.” Barbara exclaimed excitedly, “I’ve always doubted that, but only by standing before it can I truly appreciate its beauty…”

Karin said coldly, "If you close your eyes and listen carefully, the wails of tormented souls in the wind will tell you whether this is heaven or hell."

Barbara glanced cautiously at Karin, then unconsciously hid behind Randall.

Randall quickly changed the subject: "Miss Forman, is this the safe house you mentioned?"

"That's right."

"Hiding in the Holy See's cemetery? Isn't that a bit too risky?"

Karin turned and walked deeper into the cemetery, saying as she went, "The city of Taro is full of church spies. The residents of every neighborhood have become irrational, fanatical believers. Only in this place, where we are surrounded by the dead, can we find a moment of peace."

Kellogg, the lizardman, wagged his tail and followed: "This logic is not wrong. In the current situation, the most dangerous place is the safest place."

Father Pedro, carrying an oil lamp, slowly walked along the mossy path in the cemetery, until he arrived at a keeper's hut built deep inside the cemetery.

Pedro pushed open the dilapidated wooden door of the hut, walked to a row of bookshelves, grabbed the edge of the bookshelves with both hands, and pulled them outward with force, revealing a stone staircase leading downwards.

“People often talk about the thousand-year history of the Temple of Tero, but few know that the underground world of Tero City actually has an even longer history than the surface world.” Pedro said with a smile, “The earliest predecessor of Tero City was an underground refuge for believers, built to escape the invasion of northern barbarians.”

Bourville carefully stepped on the loose and fragile stone bricks, saying, "I can tell you're very knowledgeable about history."

Pedro shook his head in denial, saying, "I'm just an ordinary clergyman who has memorized scriptures by rote. I've only read church books and debates, how could I possibly know this kind of knowledge? Actually, I once had a very knowledgeable friend who had read thousands of books and knew many things that ordinary people don't..."

Bulville stopped and asked curiously, "Once upon a time?"

Pedro's voice trailed off: "My friend's name was Tristan, and he is no longer alive."

Aldenan crouched down, inhaling the stench of decay filling his nostrils, and looked at the mortuary niches embedded in the stone walls beside the underground passage. He whispered to Carol, "Are we going to be living in a place like this?"

Carol said in a deep voice, "If you don't want to stay here, I know a better place that would definitely welcome you."

"Where?"

"The church's prison."

Aldenan spat and kicked the skeleton at his feet in frustration.

The group followed the underground passage of the cemetery to an underground hall with broken statues and stone benches.

Pedro lit the torches around the room and said, "This used to be an underground church in the city of Tero, a place for preaching to the residents who hid underground, but it has been abandoned for a long time. There are some rooms in the back hall of this church; if you clean them up, you can stay for a few days without any problem."

Randall asked Karin, "How long do we have to wait here before we can enter the church prison to find those scholars?"

Karin shook her head: "You shouldn't be asking me this question."

Pedro made the sign of the cross to Randall: "When Bishop Abel has arranged everything, he will come to you."
