Chapter 599 The City of Martyrs (Part 3)

The torchlight flickered as a squad of Papal soldiers guarded the checkpoint in front of the city gate, inspecting passing pedestrians and vehicles.

The captain on duty was a burly man with a scar on his face. He looked at the convoy of corpses and asked suspiciously, "Father, why are you entering the city so late?"

Pedro looked at his captain by the firelight and calmly asked, "Where is Balson? He's usually on duty at this time."

"That bastard got drunk and said some blasphemous things about God the Father. He's in jail now repenting!"

Scarface's words startled Pedro slightly. After regaining his composure, he replied, "I am Father Pedro. These are carriages used by the church to transport the bodies of sinners."

The scarred captain asked again, "Why enter the city in the middle of the night?"

Pedro looked at the captain with a strange gaze: "You think it's proper to transport a body in broad daylight under the watchful eyes of everyone?"

Scarface scratched his head, then realized what was going on.

Indeed, it was not a good idea to pull cartloads of corpses out of the city during the day, under the watchful eyes of the citizens.

Scarface pointed to the crowd beside the convoy and asked, "Who are they?"

“The villagers who were my followers helped me transport the body to the crematorium.”

Scarface stepped forward: "Get out of the way, I need to inspect the carriage."

Pedro growled angrily, "Your behavior has exceeded my tolerance limit! Aren't you afraid the Church will hold you accountable...?"

Scarface interrupted him: "If you have any complaints, go talk to Cardinal Jacob. He's the one who signed and issued the martial law decree. We're just following orders."

As the soldiers walked past him toward the convoy, Pedro cried out in desperation, "Aren't you afraid of the Father's wrath?!"

Randall, who was hiding in the carriage, drew a short sword from under his body and gestured to Barbara, whose body began to slowly flicker with pale blue light.

Just then, Karin, disguised as a cultist, walked to the front of the caravan. Concealing herself entirely under her wide robe, she first made the sign of the cross to the soldiers, then reached out to pull back the burlap covering the carriage.

A soldier who inadvertently saw Karin's arm suddenly screamed loudly, as if he had seen the most terrifying thing.

Scarface walked over unhappily and shouted, "What's all the noise about?!"

"Captain, look at her arm!"

Scarface glanced at Karin and gestured for her to roll up her sleeves.

The next second, what the scarred captain saw made him gasp.

Karin's arms were covered with grayish-brown pustules, and dark red blood kept seeping from her skin. In some of the broken wounds, wriggling maggots could be faintly seen.

"Ugh! Get away from me! What are these things?!"

Pedro rolled his eyes and explained to the scarred captain, "You should know that these people have been in contact with rotting and diseased corpses for a long time. The corpse poison has entered their bodies, and they will be infected as soon as they touch it. Moreover, there is also poison on these carriages..."

"Get out! Get out of here right now!" Scarface shouted, waving his hand forcefully as he backed away. "Don't let me see these filthy guys again!"

Feeling the carriage slowly move forward and pass through the city gate checkpoint, Randall breathed a sigh of relief: "We're in the city."

Pedro, sitting in the driver's seat of the carriage, looked at Karin beside him and asked softly, "Your health?"

Karin rolled up her sleeves and vigorously rubbed her arms, and the dreadful, chilling wounds disappeared as if painted away.

“I know someone who can combine different types of drugs to create the effects of blood and wounds.”

Hearing Karin's words, Pedro was curious and wanted to ask what kind of potion could produce such an effect, but after thinking about it, he gave up the idea.

The carriage traveled for more than an hour in the pitch-black night before finally stopping at the entrance of a cemetery.

Upon hearing Karin utter the code word for safety, Aldenan couldn't wait and was the first to climb out of the carriage, lying on the ground to breathe in the fresh air.

"I swear in the name of the Holy King! I will never again step into that coffin-like hellhole in my life!"

Carol jumped down from the carriage and looked at Aldenan with disdain: "Don't be so absolute. When our lives come to an end, coffins will be our only resting place."

Aldenan, gagging, said impatiently, "I'd rather be burned to ashes after I die than have my body buried in a box underground!"

Kellogg, the lizardman, stood at the entrance of the cemetery, gazing into the distance: "Hiss... Instead of arguing, why don't you take a look at where you are?"

The minotaur Bulville stared wide-eyed at the city skyline under the night sky and said incredulously, "If I'm not mistaken, that looks like...?"

"The Father's Courtyard, the center of the universe, the supreme place of descent, the origin of all will." Karin lifted her hood and said calmly, "The complex of buildings before you is the Terro Sanctuary, which has a history of more than 1,500 years."

Barbara followed Randall, gazing at the magnificent and spectacular area in the distance, and couldn't help but exclaim in admiration.

The magnificent religious spires, like stars in the night sky, are densely scattered across the land.

Thousands of ever-burning lamps stand in neat rows, dividing the area into four main sections. From a distance, the building layout resembles a giant cross.
