An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Living in the underground world of Terro, Randall cannot see the sun, moon, or stars, and has difficulty discerning the passage of time.
When Karin found him, Randall learned that they had been in the city for three nights and two days.
“Bishop Abel has arrived.”
Karin leaned against the wall, turned her head toward the exit leading to the ground, and whispered, "He wants to see you."
Randall nodded, walked through the long corridor filled with coffins, and came to the gravedigger's hut, where he saw Father Pedro standing beside an old man.
"Gianluca is dead."
The old man's aged and weary voice startled Randall.
"Although our people have no way to access the prison, I learned from the prison guards this morning that Gianluca did not survive last night."
"Of all the academic leaders at the Royal Academy of Teruo, only Professor Yevni, the Alchemy Professor, is still alive," Abel said helplessly.
Randall looked at Abel and said, "We should get to the church prison right now, or it will be too late!"
With Pedro's help, Abel leaned on the table and slowly stood up. As he walked toward the door, he said to Randall, "Come with me."
The two left the gravedigger's hut and came to the cemetery on the ground. They walked past the densely packed tombstones and finally stopped in a small garden at the very back.
In the very center of the garden stands a solitary, inconspicuous tombstone, on which the name 'Tristan' can still be faintly discerned.
Abel gently stroked the tombstone: "He was my best student."
Randall crouched down, looked at the bouquet of flowers placed in front of the tombstone, and said softly, "I've heard about him."
“As his teacher, I couldn’t even collect his body after he died.” Abel looked up at the sky. “After the burning at the stake, the church crushed his remains and poured them into the foundation of the city wall. Before that, I could only secretly bribe a farming couple to bribe the executioners and find a way to buy some of his ashes.”
Randall listened to Abel's words with a frown, without saying a word.
“My old friends couldn’t understand why I devoted myself to the church. They thought I was power-hungry…” Abel sat down slowly, looked at the words on the tombstone, and closed his eyes: “Looking at the whole world, only this student of mine truly understood my good intentions and purpose. However, in the end, he also left me.”
After a moment of silence, Abelard suddenly spoke, "The day after tomorrow, when the moon is at its zenith, I will have Pedro take you to the prison."
Randall watched as Abel turned to leave and asked, "And what about you? Will you leave with us?"
The old man did not answer the question, but simply left the garden with heavy steps.
At the cemetery entrance, Karin, dressed in black, watched Abel slowly approach and asked in a low voice, "Have you thought it through?"
Abel gestured for Pedro to leave first, then said to Karin, "I've thought about this for a long time."
Karin paused for a moment, then couldn't help but say again, "After tomorrow night, your choice will make you lose everything. Won't you hesitate and regret it?"
Looking at this beautiful girl who was no more than twenty years old, Abel smiled: "Why hesitate? Why regret? Don't you have faith in your Holy King?"
"Of course not!"
Abel said softly, “Todd Fischer is a unique individual. He is like a warm and bright sun, dispelling the darkness in people's hearts and inspiring the souls of believers. I fully believe that he can restore God's former glory... He is the most suitable person to be the pope after the unification of the denominations…”
Karin lowered her head, hiding her expression from others, and said softly, "I know."
Abel looked at Karin and sighed almost imperceptibly: "Karin, you helped me a lot during your time in Tero City. Without you and your Alien Association, I might be buried here now. In a way, I owe you a favor."
"Don't overthink it, I'm just following orders..."
"I have read the church's records about your Holy King, and I am very familiar with his deeds. From his entry into the Saint Sidlow Monastery to the founding of the Knights of Twilight, I am very familiar with everything."
Karin slowly frowned.
“Karin Forman, you were one of the first followers to come to his side. You went through the most difficult times together. Todd even risked his life at the Inquisition for you…”
Karin's eyes slowly sharpened, like a mother cat whose tail had been stepped on: "What exactly are you trying to say?"
Abel smiled and shook his head: "When you're with that Holy King, you have to convince yourself not to see him as a god, but as a human being."
After saying this, Abelard climbed the steps of the carriage and disappeared into the carriage.
As the sound of the carriage wheels faded into the distance, Karin felt as if all her strength had been drained away. She slowly leaned against the wall, muttering, "What a nagging fellow."
In a small garden deep within the cemetery.
Randall, who hadn't yet left, looked at Tristan's tombstone and muttered to himself, "Waiting for that destined moment?"
Father Pedro walked up behind him and said, "Brother Tristan has completed his mission."
Randall turned around: "Mission?"
“Many people believe that life is nothing more than a process leading to death, and no matter how hard you try, the end is the same. Instead of struggling, it’s better to go with the flow.” Pedro said, holding the cross on his chest with his right hand. “However, everyone’s birth is not meaningless. We are all travelers carefully arranged by God, and we are given a sacred mission from birth.”
Pedro smiled and said, "You may think I'm exaggerating, but it's true. Some people are born to be heroes, some are born to be kings, some will create epics that will last forever, and some will change history."
Randall said softly, "For that destined moment."
Pedro clapped his hands and said, "That's right, we're all waiting for that destined moment. When that moment comes, your mission will be perfectly accomplished, and your life will be without regrets."
Randall stood up, nodded, and said, "Your insights have been very helpful to me."
Pedro quickly waved his hand and said, "These are not my words, but Lord Abel's admonitions to warn the world."
If the end of my destiny has truly been arranged by the gods, then what exactly is my mission?
With this question in mind, Randall looked up at the sky.
A cold wind swept through the air, carrying a piercing wail that shattered the long-standing tranquility of the cemetery.
Despite being fully clothed, Randall involuntarily shivered.
