An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Back in the catacombs, Randall gathered all the team members and said, "The time for the operation has been set for the night after tomorrow."
Bulville stamped his hooves happily: "Great! Finally, we can leave this awful place!"
Kellogg flicked his forked tongue and asked Randall, "How do we sneak into the prison?"
“Bishop Abel will send Father Pedro to accompany us; he will help us get into the prison.”
The lizardman rolled his eyes and asked in a skeptical tone, "Don't blame me for being suspicious, but can we really trust the people in the church?"
Karin, standing next to Randall, suddenly spoke up: "I also dislike the church, but based on my observation, Bishop Abel is a trustworthy person."
Kellogg shrugged, giving him a "you decide" look.
Carol asked expressionlessly, "Will there be any fighting during the operation?"
Karin explained, “We go through the underground tunnel into the Holy Court Square, and then through the Sacred Corridor into the Inquisition. The Church of Abel has made all the arrangements for this journey, so we can avoid all battles.”
Carol pressed on, "And then?"
"The prison guards are all die-hard supporters of the church's pro-war faction. There is no other way but to launch a direct assault. That is why we need a strong squad to carry out this mission."
"Troop strength?"
"Two squadrons of church knights, and a full-fledged order of holy judgment believers."
"The location of the rescue target?"
"The map for the southwest section of the third level of the prison is ready; I will give it to you later."
Carroll crossed her arms and said, "I'm fine now."
Aldenan cried out anxiously, "Wait! Wait! The biggest problem is how we retreat?!"
Karin glanced at the werewolf: "The day after tomorrow morning, Lord Cumberland's expeditionary force will arrive at Tyro City, and the enemy will focus all their attention on defending the city."
"The day after tomorrow night, before we take action, Bishop Abel, together with the Heterogeneous Society, will try to find a way to open the west gate of Tero City. If the gate is opened, then we only need to wait for the expeditionary force to enter the city, and then leave at our leisure."
Aldenan asked, "What if we rescue the people, but the city gates remain closed?"
"Just like the initial plan, either we hide in the safe houses in the city and wait for the war to end; or if the situation in the city becomes critical, we call the Valkyrie Squad to take you out of the city."
Carol said to Aldenan with a hint of annoyance, "So? Are you satisfied now?"
Aldenan rolled his eyes and stopped talking.
Barbara, who hadn't uttered a word from beginning to end, was pale and had fine beads of sweat on her forehead.
She suddenly stood up and said to everyone, "Excuse me, I'm going to get some fresh air."
Ignoring everyone's stares, Barbara ran quickly out of the room.
Carol wanted to stand up, but after hesitating for a long time, she sat down again.
Karin tossed the map she was holding onto the table and said, "You guys continue making plans, I'm going to check on her."
Randall looked in the direction Barbara had left and said worriedly, "Should I...?"
Karin walked out of the room without looking back: "You don't understand women's affairs."
After searching for a long time in the underground corridor, Karin finally found Barbara hiding in a corner of an underground ventilation shaft.
The latter knelt on the ground, his hands gripping the wall, and kept dry heaving.
"Why not tell him?" Karin crossed her arms and leaned against the wall, her face calm. "He has the right to know everything."
Barbara wiped her mouth and slumped to the ground: "Now is not a good time."
Karin shrugged noncommittally.
“He has more important things to do, and I don’t want to disturb him at this time.” Barbara placed her right hand on her lower abdomen and lowered her head as she said, “For that man, loyalty to the kingdom and His Majesty is always the top priority.”
Karin pressed the back of her head against the wall, looked up at the ceiling, and said softly, "This is very unfair to you."
Barbara braced herself on the ground, struggling to stand up.
Karin went over and pulled her up, helping her sit on a stone bench.
Barbara sighed and looked at Karin softly, saying, "There's never any fairness when it comes to matters of the heart."
Karin's hands froze in mid-air, and she stood there stunned.
"In the face of love, women are always the weaker party. We yearn for more love from our lovers, yet we fear that it will lead to resentment and cause us to drift further apart."
Barbara said calmly, "Men are different; they always have things that are far more important than family."
A look of loneliness and sadness appeared on Karin's face as she slowly sat down next to Barbara without saying a word.
Barbara brushed a strand of hair behind her ear and laughed self-deprecatingly: "But what men don't know is that the most important thing in a woman's life is him all she has left."
After saying this, Barbara stood up, leaning against the wall: "Let's go back. We shouldn't have been out for too long."
Karin watched Barbara's retreating figure and suddenly asked in a low voice, "Have you ever regretted it?"
Barbara turned around, a bright smile on her face: "Regret? Why should I regret it? He made my life more complete and meaningful."
Terro City, the sixth temporary morgue.
Countless black parasites crawled out of the throat bone's body, writhing and twisting on the floor like demons craving flesh and blood, searching for a sacrifice.
