An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
"A month later, Theodore did not return. Instead, he sent a bunch of strange coffins, which he called a gift for us."
"Open those coffins, and inside lie a group of alien species that have long since lost their vital signs."
"When we awakened these people, we discovered that they were the necromancers that Theodore had been researching."
"These necromancers possess stable abilities and can move freely without undergoing mutations, but they have very low intelligence and can only understand very simple commands."
"Even so, this surprised both Illid and me. Neither of us expected that Theodore could reliably generate Necromancers."
At this point, Eleanor's smile vanished: "It was around that time that I learned that Eliard had secretly given the Resurrection Worm to Theodore a long time ago for his research."
"The Soul-Returning Worm is the most important tool in my soul transfer ritual. I lent it to Iliad so that he could study soul transfer, and I made it clear that it could not be taken out of the Elder Council. Iliad broke the agreement between us, and because of this, the gap between us grew wider and wider, until we finally broke up completely."
"I was firmly against continuing Theodore's experiment on the necromancer, while Eliard was in favor of continuing it. Neither of us could convince the other, and at that time I intended to intervene forcefully, but soon, Theodore sent a second gift."
Eleanor touched her lips and smiled, "The second gift was given to me by Theodore, it's a perfect body."
Todd asked, "Body?"
Eleanor said, "A body that can resolve the aftereffects of soul transfer, a product of the Necromancer's technology, an experimental subject capable of achieving immortality... Let's put that aside for now and continue with the Necromancer's matter. After receiving this gift, I temporarily spared Theodore and tacitly allowed him to continue his experiments."
"After that, Theodore's necromancy experiments went very smoothly until one day, he suddenly sent a strange letter."
"The letter said that the Necromancers are a failed technology that will not only fail to save the alien races, but will also create an uncontrollable monster."
"He made a mistake back then, completely reversing the direction of his research."
"Now, he has come into contact with a completely new academic field. With lenses made of glass, one can see the tiny organisms inside water droplets, and with needles made of sea urchin spines, one can inject drugs into blood vessels. These technologies will completely change everything and create a new world."
"He also said in the letter that Sutherland's legacy was not a curse, but a gift from the sages, provided that you find the right way to use it."
Eleanor said helplessly, "The first half of the letter was completely incomprehensible to Elijah and me. But the second half caused a huge uproar in the council of elders."
"Theodore decided to collaborate with a place called Duskwood to study Sutherland's legacy and find a way for the aliens to survive. He also decided to share many technologies with Duskwood, including the Necromancers and the Resurrection Worms."
"And Muxi Town is a small town in the Silver Ring Diocese of the Father Church."
Having heard Eleanor's words, Todd now fully understood the whole story.
Eleanor's statement continued: "Theodore's cooperation with the Father, whatever his reasons, is a betrayal of the Presbyterian Church. Eliade and I immediately decided to send the Legion of Strife as messengers to deal with this defection."
"But a few months later, the news came that Theodore had been killed, the entire envoy of the Legion of Strife had been wiped out, and all the research materials had been taken away by a guy named Throat Bone."
Eleanor let out a sigh of relief and continued, "That's roughly the history of the development of the Necromancers."
Todd went through the timeline of events from beginning to end and determined that Eleanor's account was largely credible, but this still did not resolve his previous doubts.
"You said before that you had a way to deal with the threat of the undead?"
Eleanor smiled and said, "Now for the important part. I'd like to invite you to see something, but only you can come; everyone else must stay here."
Meredith objected, "What trick are you trying to pull now?"
Eleanor ignored Meredith, moved closer to Todd, looked up at his chin, and said softly, "Come with me and you will see hope for saving your kingdom. If you back down, you will only watch the Dragon Kingdom become dust in history."
Todd grabbed Eleanor's wrist and said coldly, "I accept your invitation."
