An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Todd watched as Sutherland slowly landed beside him, raising his paw and pointing it into the darkness: "Tell me, what are these? Are they also figments of your soul space?"
Sutherland slowly shook his head and said, "No, they are different."
Todd: "I don't understand why something like this would appear in your soul space? I need an explanation."
Sutherland: "It's a long story, but perhaps we should go somewhere else."
Todd: "Why can't we say this here? Wait, these things are growing..."
The black parasites on the ground, like the rising tide, were slowly eroding the earth.
In less than half a minute, the black boundary extended inward by more than a meter.
Sutherland: "It's not safe here. I'll wait for you at the manor."
After saying that, Sutherland vanished into thin air.
Todd glanced in the direction he had come from and froze on the spot: "Does this mean I have to fly back?"
Five hours later, when Todd flew over the vineyard, he was so exhausted that he landed face-first on the ground.
Looking at Sutherland approaching, Todd weakly waved his paw and said, "Let me catch my breath."
Sutherland placed a barrel of red wine in front of Todd, lifted the lid, took out a glass, scooped out a cup, and downed it in one gulp.
Todd licked his lips, leaned close to the barrel, and drank most of it in one gulp.
Sutherland sat down next to Todd, looked up at the starry sky, and said, "A hundred years ago, the Elders used a forbidden ritual to create a body for me that could contain my soul... the one you saw in the volcano before."
Todd nodded: "A product of the combined effects of the Tyrant Virus, Sutherland Archaea, and Resurrection Worms."
Sutherland: "In the early stages of adapting to the new body, I could sense a strange power within this creature, a power that craved flesh and blood."
“At first, no one paid any attention to these things. Until one ceremony, an elder’s assistant accidentally touched my severed limb. Some black insects crawled out of the gap in the limb and burrowed into his skin.”
"In a very short time, the man died in agony amidst screams, and countless black worms crawled out of his body, turning him into a soulless walking corpse."
Todd: "Is it from that time that you finally discovered the existence of the necromancy?"
Sutherland: "At first, we didn't know that these insects could turn living beings into undead. But after a series of experiments, the scholars in the Elder Council discovered how terrifying these insects were."
"They started trying everything they could to get rid of these dangerous insects. I suggested that we destroy the body and nip this threat to the entire world in the bud."
Todd: "But the elders didn't agree to your proposal?"
Sutherland: "No, they agreed... They tried to destroy the body—fire, cold, pulverization... but found that no matter what they did, the black worms always survived. And after that, they found that destroying the body didn't help the whole thing at all."
Todd: "What do you mean?"
Sutherland: "Shortly after that incident, a fishing village near the Elders' Council pulled something out of the sea—a fish infected with black worms."
"After learning about this, the Elders immediately began to inspect the Resurrection Experiment Field, only to discover that the cave at the bottom of the Supuha Mountains was connected to the sea, and the undead plague had already spread into the sea along with the ocean currents."
"The whole thing has completely spiraled out of control."
Todd: "You mean the necromantic virus entered the ocean, and the source is you?"
Sutherland: "Yes."
Todd: "Didn't the Elders try to control it?"
Sutherland: "We tried everything, every possible means, but the necromantic virus is spreading faster and faster in the ocean, and the extent of its harm is terrifying."
Todd took a deep breath and asked again, "Then what about those undead I saw in the soul space today?"
Sutherland: "The Elders inadvertently created a necromancer. After discovering that they could not destroy this body, they tried to extract my soul and store it in a safer environment."
"However, once my soul leaves this body, this created monster begins to attack everything in its path, and almost nothing can stop it."
Todd: "So, to stop the monster's actions, they once again placed your soul inside its body, using your consciousness to stop its attacks. But you still haven't explained why undead parasites appeared in your soul space..."
Sutherland: "This is what I'm about to tell you... My soul resides within this monster, and as time goes by, I've gradually discovered that my control over this monster is weakening day by day, while the power of the undead is increasing little by little."
“Every day, I can feel my consciousness being eroded by the necromancy within me, my sanity is fading little by little, and my craving for flesh and blood is growing stronger every day.”
Sutherland sighed deeply: "I don't know what happened, but the undead and I are not only fighting for this body, but more so for my soul."
Todd understood somewhat: "You mean, the undead are corrupting your soul, which is why traces of the undead are appearing in your soul space."
Sutherland: "I try my best to stop the necromancy every day, but I don't know how much longer I can hold on."
Todd thought about it carefully.
The resurrection worm, after being modified by the tyrant, extracts the souls of living beings and disperses them.
It seems that the necromancy is indeed affecting Sutherland, and the situation is far from optimistic.
Todd suddenly remembered something: "Wait a minute, there's something else I don't understand."
Sutherland: "Ask away."
Todd: "If you and the undead are fighting for control of your soul, why do you keep absorbing Tyrants? Don't you know that Tyrants can make the undead in your body stronger and accelerate the collapse of your soul space?"
Sutherland looked at Todd, nodded slightly, and said, "I understand everything you're saying, but I have to do it."
Todd: "Why?"
Sutherland: "It's not the right time to talk about this."
Todd's eyes widened: "Now is not the time?! What are you talking about! The necromancer is about to invade your soul space. If you stop absorbing the Tyrant now, you still have a sliver of hope to save your soul. If you continue to absorb the Tyrant, as the power of the necromancer continues to increase, your soul will eventually collapse completely! Do you understand what I'm saying?"
Sutherland: "I understand, but I can't stop."
Todd: "You..."
Sutherland: "Todd, the final moment is coming soon. Before long, you will know all the answers."
