An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Sutherland Soul Space.
Todd tilted his head and looked at Sutherland: "Do all of you elders have this problem? You always say only half of what you mean?"
Sutherland lay on the bench, his eyes closed, and said, "Words do not need to be exhausted."
Todd shook his head and said, "If your body continues to absorb the Tyrant's power, sooner or later the power of the undead will suppress your power, this soul space will be completely destroyed, and your soul will become the undead's spoils of war. Is that alright?"
Sutherland: "I don't care how many times I have to tell you, I'm doing this voluntarily."
Todd looked at him incredulously: "When your soul space is destroyed, your family's souls will have nowhere to go, and that's okay?"
Sutherland was momentarily stunned.
After a moment, he slowly said, "They will understand."
Todd sighed heavily. "I don't understand what you're trying to do."
Sutherland waved his hand: "Let's change the subject..."
Todd: "Fine, I don't want to talk to you about anything else unless you let me out of this damn place."
Sutherland said, "I assure you that you will be interested in what follows."
Todd: "I've already said I don't want to discuss anything anymore. Ask me to leave this godforsaken place, I..."
Sutherland: "Would you like to talk about the War of the Chosen?"
Todd shuddered, remained silent for a few seconds, then looked at Sutherland in disbelief: "So, you are...?"
Sutherland winked at Todd: "No need to be so surprised...you are too..."
Todd: "Wait a minute, how did you know I was... oh damn, your superpowers..."
Remembering the other party's ability to read minds, Todd sighed helplessly.
Sutherland: "My powers aren't what you think they are; they're actually... Of course, that's not the point of our discussion. You've already seen Scáthach and Leviathan from the Forerunners regarding the War of the Chosen."
Todd: "So, you've met the Forerunners too?"
Sutherland started counting on his fingers: "I've seen Scáthach, but back then she was called Bilt; I've only heard of Leviathan, it doesn't like humans, so I don't want to risk going to it; Coritiger is a woman who loves to disguise herself, I don't really like dealing with her..."
Todd rubbed his temples hard with one hand and stopped Sutherland with the other: "Just how many Forerunners have you seen?"
Sutherland: "There are some I may not remember, but there were probably more than ten people, right?"
Todd: "More than ten people?!"
Todd stared at Sutherland in astonishment and asked, "I heard Leviathan say that many Forerunners have left this place, some even choosing self-exile. It and Scáthach are two Forerunners who have maintained contact for nearly a thousand years... But how could you possibly have seen ten of them?!"
Sutherland looked at Todd and said with a smile, "You want to ask me how I met these pioneers during my years of life, right?"
Todd nodded.
Sutherland didn't rush to answer Todd's question, but instead muttered to himself, "It seems you haven't remembered yet."
Upon hearing this, Todd quickly asked, "What did you remember?"
Sutherland stroked his chin, pondered for a moment, and slowly said, "Let me think, where should I begin?"
A moment later, Sutherland suddenly asked Todd a strange question: "Have you ever had this experience? That you suddenly have a strange premonition about things that are about to happen in the future; or have an inexplicable sense of familiarity with things that just happened not long ago?"
Todd thought for a moment and nodded, saying, "This feeling is called déjà vu. In my original world, it was also known as the hippocampal effect. It's mainly because the human brain associates sensory feedback, thus creating a feeling of déjà vu or something that has happened before."
Sutherland clapped his hands: "A rather theoretical explanation, but quite different from reality."
Todd: "Gap? I don't understand what you're talking about..."
Sutherland: "More than a thousand years ago, during the time of ancient Tyro, doctors often encountered a strange case when studying mental illness. These people claimed that they could see the future shortly afterward, or had a very strong feeling about past events, which is what you just mentioned as déjà vu."
"Gutero's doctors did not take these cases seriously; they considered them merely associations caused by fatigue or concentration."
"However, a relatively... free doctor conducted a covert investigation of the citizens of the entire city-state and discovered a startling fact."
"More than two-thirds of the population have experienced déjà vu symptoms to varying degrees."
"This illness is like a strange infectious disease; it's harmless, but it's very bizarre."
Sutherland paused, took a breath, and continued, "Until the doctor discovered a special sick boy in the city-state."
"The boy claims that he has memories of his past life, and that these memories are constantly being completed and expanded every day."
"The doctor initially took the child's words as a joke. However, the more he listened, the more frightened he became."
"The boy recounted his past life, a world that shared many similarities with our present world. For example, some place names, some people, and some historical events. However, there were also many differences."
