An associate professor in life engineering travels to a medieval European fantasy world. Using modern biochemistry, he discovers that viruses, bacteria, and parasites extinct in human history are a...
Halfway through the meal, Gougu pushed open the door and gestured to Todd that everything was fine. Todd was relieved; this was because Todd had asked him to check on Karin before the dinner. It seemed the girl was alright.
During the dinner, Theodore was chatting when he suddenly started talking about the sage Sutherland, praising his achievements. One particular passage caught Todd's attention.
"...According to Taro's records, Sutherland, in his youth, built a hut in the Albano crater to conduct alchemical experiments, and lived there for eight years. Such a spirit of dedication to the truth is truly admirable!"
Upon hearing these words, Todd's glass hovered in mid-air, and a sudden roar echoed in his mind, like the sky after a rainstorm, where the dark clouds dispersed and the sun shone down.
"President..."
"Call me Theodore!" The old man glanced at the person next to him.
“Very well, Theodore. I’ve always wanted to learn more about the great deeds of the forefather Sutherland, but as you know, the Church strictly controls these books and articles within its sphere of influence. So, could you please…?”
The president of the "Relief Society," his face flushed from the alcohol, waved his hand dismissively: "No problem! As a member of the alien race, how can you not know Sutherland's life story?! Give Todd a copy of 'The History of Sutherland'!"
Seeing the unintentional excitement on Todd's face after receiving the book, the woman in green took a sip of her drink and smiled slightly. The former, noticing her expression out of the corner of his eye, was startled and quickly put down his book, rapidly changing the subject: "Miss Rachel, I noticed you only had appetizers; it seems you haven't eaten the main course or the grilled dishes."
Upon hearing this, Theodore looked at the table in front of the woman. Indeed, the salad was completely finished, but the stew, grilled fish, and soup remained largely untouched. The old man turned and glanced back, and the servants were instantly terrified, collapsing to their knees like trembling leaves.
The woman stirred the food in front of her with a small spoon, saying absentmindedly, "It's not their fault, it's just that I can't eat ordinary food. If only your so-called alchemy could make this unpalatable food taste better..."
The old man's eyes widened; he wanted to refute, but didn't know where to begin.
Seeing Theodore's increasingly dark face and the servants' terrified and desperate eyes, Todd, feeling a pang of pity, smiled and said, "Miss Rachel, this is not difficult."
Um?
Everyone in the room looked at the speaker, their faces filled with disbelief.
Rachel raised an eyebrow in surprise: "Just so you know, I don't want to eat sulfur or mercury water!"
"Don't worry, it's absolutely safe to eat," Todd said, while asking the maid behind him for paper and pen.
Theodore and Rachel got up from their recliners, and Goatbone leaned over to look at Todd as he wrote down the necessary tools and materials at the dining table. The more they watched, the more alarmed they became.
"Are all these things really alchemical materials?" the woman asked the old man, puzzled. The old man nodded, then shook his head: "I know some of them, but there are others I don't."
With his life at stake, the servants quickly prepared what he needed, and Todd began his alchemical experiments with food.
First, place the wheat bran evenly into a beaker. Open a bottle labeled "hydrochloric acid" in Latin and dilute the liquid concentration to about 34%. Then pour the diluted hydrochloric acid into the beaker and pressurize it to accelerate hydrolysis.
Next, a black hydrolysate was peeled off and decomposed from the beaker, and then decolorized and purified using the blood carbonized part of the animal bone (activated carbon).
Next, the obtained liquid substance is concentrated under high temperature vacuum (deoxygenation) to obtain a white crystal (glutamic acid).
Finally, the white crystals were reacted with sodium hydroxide, concentrated a second time, and then dried over a low flame to obtain a translucent granular crystal (monosodium glutamate).
The experiment lasted for almost two hours, but Theodore and Rachel did not find it boring at all, the former because of alchemy and the latter because of food.
Todd instructed the cooks to add the remaining translucent crystal particles to the broth and meat pot, brush them onto the grilled fish, and then process them again.
The dishes were served again, and within twenty minutes, not a drop of broth was left, not a single piece of meat or vegetable. Theodore ate with wide eyes, while Rachel devoured the rest of the food by herself. Todd then realized that this woman was actually a complete glutton.
When the two finished their meal and asked Todd what it was, the latter blurted out, "MSG."
