Chapter 73 The Dinner

The last rays of sunlight outside the window disappeared below the western horizon.

In the vast village, the dining hall used for entertaining guests is a huge double-sloped wooden house in the very center of the village.

The interior decorations are strange and rough, featuring medieval indigenous totems, Taro-era long-crowned stone platforms, and the "fire-cotton candle clock" that has recently become popular in southern countries.

Rachel reclined on a wooden and padded chaise lounge, frowning as she looked around the room at the completely mismatched items. She turned to the young peasant woman behind her and asked, "Are the 'village chief' and the guests still chatting?"

The maid who was being questioned knew that the other person was someone she absolutely could not neglect, so she quickly bowed respectfully and replied, "The master and his guests are still inside the main room and have not come out yet."

The woman in the light green dress clenched her fist and slammed it against the wooden table in front of the recliner. Her ample bosom trembled and shook like ocean waves with the force of the movement, leaving the maid speechless: "The sun has already set, aren't they going to eat yet?!"

"Um...excuse me, what did you just say?" Coming to her senses, the peasant woman looked away from Rachel's chest, completely forgetting the other person's question, and had no choice but to ask to confirm again.

"Eat, eat! When can we eat?!"

The maid struggled to focus her attention on the questioner's face and carefully replied, "The cooks have prepared the dishes, and I believe the master will be here soon..." As Rachel turned her face away, the young peasant woman, taking advantage of the fact that no one was looking, secretly lifted the bodice of her dress and peeked inside, then let out a sigh of frustration.

“You mean these symbols and formulas aren’t the alchemists’ codes and codes, but are called that…” A loud voice rang out from outside. Rachel raised her head from the wooden table, looking exactly like a little animal that had heard the command to “eat.”

“Chemical equation.” Todd was the first to enter. He pushed open the wooden door of the large house, then reached out to block the wooden board, leading Theodore behind him into the room.

The old man seemed unconcerned about these formalities, but when the woman in green saw this, her eyes darted around, and a hint of surprise appeared on her face.

Todd turned his head and saw another guest reclining on the chaise lounge, wearing only a tight-fitting long dress and with a shapely figure. He quickly looked away and looked at the president of the relief association with some surprise.

The latter looked at the person beside the table, stroked his beard in distress, and while pondering the wording of the introduction, said in a deep voice, "Let me introduce you. This is Rachel, she is an acquaintance of mine..."

Trying to avoid looking at the other person's body, Todd nodded to the woman, then looked at the strange dining table and recliner in front of him with a headache.

The dinner table was square, surrounded by three cushioned chaise lounges with covers, the edges of which were just higher than the table.

Todd watched as Theodore took off his shoes and settled into the chaise lounge on the left, while the chaise lounge on the right had already been taken by Rachel, leaving him only the main chaise lounge facing the door.

You're supposed to eat dinner lying down?

What kind of rule is this? Besides, isn't it uncomfortable to eat while lying down?

With the idea of "when in Rome, do as the Romans do," Todd took off his shoes and carefully lay down on the chaise longue at the head of the table. His head was facing Theodore. But he simply couldn't bring himself to expose his feet, which hadn't been washed for days, to the woman below. So he simply tucked his legs into his lap, adopting a "curled-up" posture on the chaise longue.

Seeing the strange look on the person in front of her, Rachel immediately understood what the other person was thinking. Overjoyed, she lay down completely, covering her mouth with one hand and slapping the table with the other, laughing out loud.

Theodore glared at the woman opposite him, clapped his hands, and signaled the maids to begin the banquet.

First, a small wooden cup, narrow at the bottom and wide at the top, was placed in front of everyone. The maids poured newly brewed red wine into the cups. Theodore picked up the wooden cup, raised it into the air, and said, "The first cup is dedicated to the three gods of the sky, war, and order!"

After saying that, he drank it all in one gulp.

Seeing the woman opposite him say the same words and drink the wine in her glass, Todd did the same.

The old man quickly raised the second cup and said, "The second cup is dedicated to the glory of Taro!"

Everyone did as instructed.

"The third cup is dedicated to the Savior—Sutherland!"

Listening to the content and order of the first three sentences, Todd vaguely understood.

After finishing his three glasses of wine, Theodore placed the glass beside him and clapped his hands again to signal the next step of the dinner.

The maids brought in various cutlery and laid them out on the table. There were knives, toothpicks, and all sorts of spoons, including long-handled spoons, pointed spoons, and scoops for eating eggs or shellfish.

A sumptuous dinner was served, including appetizers, two main courses, a barbecue, and dessert. The appetizers were a salad made with lettuce and onions, accompanied by eggs, sashimi, olives, and cheese. The main courses were a meat and vegetable soup and a hare stew with bay leaves. The barbecue was flavorful grilled mackerel, and the dessert consisted of fruits such as pomegranates, citrus fruits, plums, blueberries, and mulberries.

As they sipped their drinks at the table, Todd made a strange discovery: unlike the first three libations, the subsequent red wine was clearly mixed with honey and spring water, reducing the alcohol content to a negligible level, making it much easier for him to drink.

To accommodate the moods of both guests, Todd discussed phenomena and reactions in microbiology and chemistry with Theodore, while chatting with Rachel about his impressions of medieval customs, culture, and cuisine. He noticed that the woman showed little interest in other topics, but her enthusiasm was highest when it came to food and drink. So, he catered to her interests and began introducing local delicacies and specialties he had seen on television in his previous life. The group chatted happily, with everyone enjoying themselves.
