Chapter 95 The Right and Wrong of Power

A knight who harbors resistance or even hostility towards his supernatural abilities...

Todd touched his chin, which was now slightly covered in downy hair, and felt a headache coming on. Alfonso was undoubtedly a steadfast and loyal Papal knight. Perhaps it was the Church's long-standing propaganda that vilified the image of other races, or the psychological trauma of using the "Dragon Bone" ability to kill his wife, that made him have no sense of acceptance towards the use of other races.

Suddenly remembering something, Todd asked Leslie and Walton, "How did you two meet your boss?"

The two exchanged a glance, and Leslie spoke first: "The village I used to live in was a settlement of mutants, with fewer than forty people. One day, the 'Relief Society' found us. At first, they tried to persuade us to join them, but when we refused, they used violence to forcibly abduct people. My father was killed in the resistance. I was put into a prison van and transported to the 'Relief Society's' stronghold. On the way, I met the leader, who saved me, and without his permission, I stayed by his side."

Walton sighed and began to reminisce: "Adelina's husband and I were friends. We lived in a town east of Ravenwood at that time. People would disappear from time to time in the town, but at first we didn't pay much attention. Until one day, Adelina also disappeared. My husband and I followed the clues and found her deep in the forest, where we also encountered an inheritor who had been transformed into a monster. Adelina's husband died protecting his wife from the monster's claws. We were saved by Lord Dekavor who happened to be passing by..."

Upon hearing this, Leslie protested, "Hey! Have you forgotten? I was there too! I was partly responsible for saving your life!"

Walton sneered, glancing sideways. "Save me? I remember you were the first one to rush in like a fool. If the boss hadn't blocked the monster's claws with his sword, would you still be sitting here talking?"

Hearing the two arguing again, Todd slowly stood up from the ground. Alfonso's 'personality puzzle' was gradually taking shape in his mind, and he felt it was necessary to have a detailed talk with the knight.

After gently knocking on the door, Todd entered Alfonso's hut and saw the person sitting in a chair, holding a stone pestle in both hands, doing arm strength rehabilitation exercises.

Adelina, who was boiling water, was somewhat surprised to see that only Todd had entered the room.

“Could I have a few minutes? I need to talk to you about something.” Todd looked at Alfonso de Carver with an unprecedentedly serious expression.

The latter paused for a moment, then nodded to Adelina.

The woman in white robes left the small house, and as she closed the door, she cast a worried glance at Alfonso inside.

Todd found a chair and sat down opposite the knight. He glanced at the thin man in front of him and said bluntly, "Mr. Alfonso, I would like to know your opinion on the alien species."

The man sitting in the chair frowned and said in a deep voice, "Father Todd, I know what you want to ask. I am not a stupid or rigid person, and I do not agree with the Church's definition of the heretics—'the posthumous children of the devil.' In fact, I have seen many kind and upright heretics, such as my three squires."

Todd took a deep breath and said slowly, "You may have misunderstood me. The alien I mentioned in my last sentence was you."

Upon hearing this, Alfonso slowly closed his eyes and suddenly asked an unrelated question: "Father, can you imagine what it would feel like to hand over your body to the control of 'Dragon Bone'?"

Todd shook his head.

"A punch can shatter the hardest rock, a wielded sword can cleave the thickest tree trunk. It sounds wonderful, but I feel trapped in the 'Dragon Bone,' more like a machine of war than a living human being." Alfonso lowered his head, watching his five fingers slowly clench into a fist, a hint of melancholy in his voice: "What terrifies me even more is that I'm slowly succumbing to this power, enjoying this feeling, gradually forgetting a knight's understanding of the true source of power. For me, supernatural abilities are a form of opportunism, a misguided power. Honing oneself and improving one's abilities—that's the proper way for a knight to acquire power."

“Mr. Alfonso, are you mistaken about something?” Todd rubbed his forehead, somewhat helplessly saying, “A knight’s duty is to protect the old, weak, women, and children, and to fight for justice against injustice and evil. As for the abilities of other races, there is no right or wrong. It’s like the sword in your hand; using it for righteous acts represents goodness, while using it for wicked deeds means evil!”

Alfonso leaned forward, his arms gripping the armrests of the chair. "Father," he said, "I don't agree with your view. If, as you say, we don't emphasize physical training and skill development, and rely solely on weapons and strength, then knights wouldn't need swords and spears in combat. Wouldn't it be much more convenient to have crossbows loaded with arrows all over their bodies?"

Faced with such a stubborn knight, Todd's temper flared up: "If the goal is to protect the weak and uphold justice, even a knight should raise that damned crossbow and shoot the arrow into the enemy's heart! Instead of adhering to those rigid doctrines and watching the evil ones slaughter the weak!"

Alfonso flew into a rage, slamming his fist on the armrest and roaring, "This is utterly absurd! Father! You have no idea what chivalry is!"

Annoyed, Todd stood up, opened the door, looked at the two men and one woman who had stumbled in, and walked out without looking back.
