Chapter Forty: The Thunder Pool

There's no doubt they've gotten themselves into trouble.

The wind generated by their running caused almost every rat to be covered in gunpowder, which ignited easily. As the burning rats scurried around, the gunpowder gradually spread from one to ten, and from ten to a hundred.

These rats have suddenly transformed into fire rats engulfed in raging flames.

They also pose a greater danger.

"Retreat! Retreat now!"

Yu Bin shouted loudly, but just as he finished speaking, a rat rushed towards a hunter. The moment the man and the rat touched, the hunter's clothes were ignited. The hunters were so shocked that they hurriedly reached out to try to extinguish the flames, but strangely, no matter how hard they tried, the flames could not be put out.

"I know!" Sun Muchen exclaimed, his eyes wide. "Could it be that the fur used as fuel has burned off, and what's still burning is the grease under the rat's skin? That's why it's so hard to extinguish!"

Upon hearing this, Wang Lan and Yu Bin felt a chill run down their spines. If the situation was really as Sun Muchen described, it would be quite disgusting. However, seeing the long trail of flames trailing behind the rat's scurrying body, which also emitted a foul stench, it seemed that Sun Muchen's words did make some sense.

The thought of this sent chills down Wang Lan and Yu Bin's spines.

The hunter, who had been set ablaze by rats, was dying.

He was already rolling around on the ground, but he didn't know what was different about the flames fueled by rat fat. No matter how much the hunter rolled around, the fire didn't get smaller. Instead, it grew stronger and stronger, and the shrill screams kept rushing into everyone's ears.

But the hunters present had all seen too much life and death and were used to it. Besides, in a chaotic world, who would be kind enough to care about the life or death of others?

He immediately took the man who had been burned to death as a lesson, wielding his weapon even more vigorously while desperately trying to distance himself from the rats, fighting and retreating as he went, afraid of getting even a little bit on them and getting burned.

Under Yu Bin's protection, Lao Zhang and Fatty were safe. They were not injured by the rats scurrying around. Every rat that rushed at them died under Yu Bin's knife or was knocked away by him.

Wang Lan had already opened the Vajra Umbrella and held it horizontally in front of her. At the same time, she pulled Sun Muchen and ran desperately, creating a path. The surface of the Vajra Umbrella was covered with a thick layer of rat carcass oil, and flames swirled around it.

Sun Muchen, meanwhile, was constantly waving her longbow around. Although she didn't have the same strength as Wang Lan, even a little force was enough to make the rats change their course.

But after a few times, the longbow was also set on fire.

Fortunately, the group finally reunited with the hunters.

Many of the hunters were set on fire by rats. The scene was filled not only with the squeaking of rats but also with the screams of the hunters, all of which were stimulating the nerves of everyone.

To cover the others, Yu Bin walked at the back. He swung his knife and cut the rat following behind in two. To his surprise, he found that the rat's flesh was almost cooked. Even so, they were still able to launch an attack with great vigor. It was hard to imagine what kind of life form this was.

However, Yu Bin also noticed that the rats were moving much slower. He immediately told everyone, shouting, "Brothers, run to the market! Don't look back! These rats' limbs are burned beyond recognition. Take advantage of their slowed speed and run! Don't look back!"

Upon hearing this, everyone quickened their pace and ran towards the market, while the rats followed closely behind.

The fire on their bodies ignited the weeds on the ground, and the wind they generated as they ran fueled the flames even more. All the people could hear was the howling of the flames, but none of them dared to look back; they could only run forward.

The market is just a stone's throw away.

Someone glanced back and exclaimed, "They've stopped!"

Only then did everyone dare to turn around and look, only to see that the rat swarm had indeed stopped. The limbs of the leading rats had been burned to charcoal, and with a slight stretch forward, they crumbled into dust all over the ground, then merged with the ashes of the grass.

But they did stop and didn't take another step forward.

"Finally dead."

The hunters breathed a sigh of relief; the rats were incredibly dangerous, but thankfully, the danger was over.

“Something’s not right,” Sun Muchen said, frowning as he looked at the swarm of rats. “Look at those rats. They don’t seem to have stopped because they were burned to death. It’s more like they were burned to death on the spot because they didn’t move forward.”

One of the hunters, catching his breath, said disdainfully, "Hmph, this little girl is just spouting nonsense. Isn't everything you're saying the same thing anyway?"

“It’s not the same thing,” Sun Muchen said after thinking for a moment. “Look closely at those rats; they seem afraid to go any further.”

Hearing her say that, everyone couldn't help but look over curiously again.

The swarm of rats grew larger and larger, but they all stopped at a certain point. Although they still seemed eager to try, they dared not take another step forward. They could only wander in place until they were burned to ashes and died.

Judging from the situation, it seemed as if there was something that frightened the rats, preventing them from daring to cross the line.

"Alright, let's not think about that anymore." Yu Bin stood up after resting on the ground for a while and said, "No matter why they don't come forward, at least we've escaped a disaster and are safe for now. Let's go into the market first, find some useful supplies, and then make further plans."

His words pulled everyone back from the confusion brought by Sun Muchen. Everyone nodded and looked at each other, only to find that of the twenty or thirty people who had set out, only a dozen or so remained.

An infected swarm of rats caused nearly half of their skilled hunter team to perish.

Who could have predicted what dangers awaited them in the future?

Seeing that everyone was in low spirits, Yu Bin called out to them as they were about to enter the market, but at that moment, a hunter suddenly shouted, "Wait!"

A hunter emerged. Wang Lan knew his name: Lu Ren. His weapon was an iron chain.

Lu Ren walked up to Lao Zhang and Fatty while carrying the iron chain. Just as Lao Zhang and Fatty were looking on in astonishment, Lu Ren kicked Lao Zhang to the ground.

Old Zhang was stunned, lying on the ground at a loss, while Lu Ren, with a grim expression, said, "They may not have seen it, but I saw it clearly. You started the rats, and you almost caused us to die here."

Upon hearing this, Old Zhang trembled violently.

The fat man quickly advised, "Brother, calm down..."

"And you!" Lu Ren interrupted him, flicking the chain around the fat man's neck. The heavy chain forced the fat man to his knees.

Lu Ren shouted, "You too!"
