Chapter Sixty-Nine: Feeling the Sunshine

"Woo! Woo! Woo!"

The car immediately sounded an alarm, and the airbags quickly deflated. Wang Lan covered her nose and saw two non-opposing arrows flashing on the dashboard.

He looked at Sun Muchen and saw that Sun Muchen looked flustered, but seemed to be alright at first glance. He asked, "Muchen, are you alright?"

Sun Muchen snapped out of his daze, turned to look at Wang Lan, and said, "I, I'm fine, I was wearing my seatbelt." As he spoke, he tugged at his seatbelt and added, "But... crashing is so exciting!"

Wang Lan: "..."

"Old Zhang, how are you?"

He looked at Old Zhang, who was standing with his hands on his hips, his face pale and in great pain. "You...you bastard, my back almost broke!"

Wang Lan got out of the car, and perhaps feeling guilty, she took the initiative to help Lao Zhang out. They walked all the way to another car before Lao Zhang's back felt a little better.

Wang Lan opened the back door, gestured for him to sit down, and said, "Sit tight. This time I'll step on the gas slowly, and there won't be any problems!"

Old Zhang panicked immediately, grabbed Wang Lan and pushed him towards the back seat of the car, saying, "I don't need it, you two go to the back, I'll drive myself."

Wang Lan looked embarrassed, but she couldn't refuse Lao Zhang's hospitality, so she could only walk to the back row with Sun Muchen.

Old Zhang skillfully started the engine, shifted gears, and began driving. The car gradually increased in speed, bypassing the scene of the previous accident, and headed downwards.

Wang Lan looked on with envy and admiration, "Old Zhang, your driving skills are truly exceptional!"

But Old Zhang understood the hidden meaning in her words, "Stop flattering me!"

Wang Lan: "..."

As the car descended further, they realized that the passage was incredibly long, littered with mutilated corpses. However, the further they went, the fewer corpses there were, and the charred blood gradually turned red, as if it had been splashed on the ground and stained the walls.

The orange-yellow light gradually turned into a golden color.

They finally discovered that the downhill road had come to an end, and the road began to become flat and wider. As their view broadened, they saw beautiful and magnificent houses, with gardens in front of them, where flowers of all colors were blooming delicately.

After the car has completely left this section of downhill road.

A beam of warm light shone through the branches and leaves of the trees on both sides of the road, through the windshield of the car, and fell on the faces of the three of them.

That is…

"The rays of the sun..."

Sun Muchen blurted out instinctively that although she had never seen the sun, she had seen descriptions and illustrations of sunlight in books.

It was a warm and bright light, so bright that one dared not look directly at it.

At this moment, golden light shone brightly, shining between the houses. When they looked up, they saw a clear blue sky with a few wispy white clouds that were also tinged with color by the light.

As you look closer to the source of the light, the sky changes from azure to gold, the same color as the sun.

A warm breeze gently blew by, rustling the treetops and causing the flowers to bow their heads slightly. The golden light seemed to be disturbed as well, constantly changing its shape on the ground.

This is a completely different world from the outside.

This is a world that their imagination can never reach.

Tranquil, beautiful, warm...

It's like a paradise on earth.

"This...this is the world of the Final Fortress..."

These words, uttered softly by Wang Lan, were a mixture of longing, jealousy, resentment, and anger—a complex blend of emotions: "There's sunshine, there are roads, and there are beautiful houses..."

Wang Lan got out of the car and took a deep breath.

Although bloodstains were still visible everywhere, the air he breathed in gave him a unique freshness of earth, which combined with the sweet fragrance of flowers and trees—a scent he had never smelled outside.

In contrast, Lao Zhang appeared much calmer.

His gaze swept over the houses, his expression neither surprised nor pleased, but his furrowed brows suggested a sense of bewilderment and incomprehension.

Sun Muchen opened his arms as if embracing the sunlight, while greedily breathing in the fresh air, and said in a daze, "This is the sunshine. It feels so good on my skin, so warm. I never thought that the final fortress would have the sun. They are so lucky."

“That’s right,” Wang Lan suddenly realized, “Isn’t the sun in the sky? We’re clearly already on the ground, so where did this sun come from?”

Sun Muchen was engrossed in her own world when she heard the question, and she began to feel puzzled.

Of course, where would the sun come from in the final fortress?

"Because that wasn't the sun at all!"

Old Zhang said, "That's just an artificial light source that simulates the sun's trajectory and color. It's not like the real sun that can provide heat and energy. This artificial light source is just a facade, and the warmth you feel is just something created through other means."

Wang Lan was taken aback and asked, "How did you know?"

"I…"

Old Zhang didn't know why he knew so much about this place. But when he entered this world, he suddenly felt a sense of familiarity, as if he had seen every blade of grass and every tree here before, as if he had been here before!

He pointed to a tree not far away and said, "I don't know how I know, but go and look at that tree; the leaves shouldn't be real."
