Chapter Twenty-Nine: Phosphorus Fire

Wang Lan: "..."

His stomach churned violently, with stomach acid churning upwards relentlessly. Wang Lan felt as if a raging fire was burning his chest, and then his cheeks puffed up as he vomited with a "whoosh."

The nausea and vomiting caused Wang Lan to tremble violently, and the strength in his hands became erratic. Wang Lan didn't know what happened during that tremor; he couldn't even feel the disgust of the fly in his hand.

He felt something suddenly explode in his hand. It might have been accidentally crushed, or it might have self-destructed out of resentment at being captured. In any case, Wang Lan's hand was sticky, and he felt something tiny wriggling and crawling on his palm.

"Wow--"

He vomited again.

And then, as if by some strange twist of fate, Old Zhang struck another match.

Wang Lan, quick-witted and sharp-tongued, puffed out his cheeks and, the instant the light appeared, spat out the slippery, sticky, warm liquid, extinguishing the flames that were about to ignite.

Old Zhang: "!!!"

"Wow--"

He vomited too.

A mixture of nauseating odors assaulted Sun Muchen's nostrils with every breath. She struggled to suppress her nausea, forcing out a few words through her throat: "Go! Quickly! Go!"

The two of them were so exhausted from vomiting that they felt several times worse than being hit by an eagle or bitten by an animal.

The fat man rushed over upon hearing the noise. His stomach was already empty from vomiting. Although he felt very uncomfortable from the strange smell, he only gagged a few times. Then he said, "There are too many insects. It seems that some are ladybugs and some are flies. The ladybugs went to the money tree, while the flies went to find the piranhas!"

“It’s a ladybug,” Sun Muchen said. “Ladybugs are natural enemies of centipedes. As long as ladybugs are around, you can hardly see centipedes.”

"Stop analyzing," Wang Lan said, his voice trembling, "I've almost vomited up all the acid in my stomach. This batch of flying insects should all be uninfected species. Let's get out of here before they attack us. I can't stay here a second longer!"

He then forcefully shook his hand, trying to get rid of the disgusting stuff on it.

The others, who shared the same idea, quickly helped each other leave.

Behind them, the hissing of centipedes grew louder.

Still shaken, the group quickened their pace.

This year's Eternal Night is far too abnormal. Never before have so many flying insects and birds appeared. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that they have all come out of their nests.

The dangers posed by these flying insects and birds are not only physical, but also cause immense psychological damage. Just like the group of people at this moment, they clearly feel physically and mentally exhausted.

We don't know how far the road to the cave in the back mountain is.

As the piranhas frantically came ashore, they lost their way in their attempt to escape. Although they could still faintly hear the gurgling of the river, they dared not walk along the riverbank because of the danger posed by the piranhas.

They could only keep going forward. When they heard the sound of the river diminish, it meant that their route had deviated and they needed to reorient themselves.

So they continued to explore and move forward in this way.

But this is only the first night of the eternal night; there are still many days to come, and who knows what strange and unusual problems we will encounter.

A gloomy atmosphere gradually emerged from the void, enveloping everyone's heart.

Their steps grew heavier and more difficult.

Hunger was wearing down their already dwindling strength.

Physical and mental exhaustion eroded their will.

I don't know how long I walked.

They finally saw hope.

Those were mountain peaks that stood out clearly even under the cover of night.

The excitement made them feel their strength return, and they quickened their pace and walked forward.

They also hope that the mountains will be safe so that they can get some rest.

However, the group hadn't gone far when they heard Wang Lan sigh.

"One problem after another arises, it's really incredibly annoying."

The group was taken aback for a moment, then looked closely.

In the darkness ahead, two faint, emerald-green lights suddenly appeared…

"This...this isn't over yet?"

Old Zhang slumped onto the fat man's shoulder, covering his face and groaning in pain. He dared not speak loudly, as those two eerie green spots were truly terrifying, and in his knowledge, there seemed to be very few animals that could emit such light.

Sun Muchen was annoyed by the series of troubles. Seeing the green dot appearing and disappearing, floating erratically, he felt it was like a ghost or a spirit. So he drew an arrow, nocked it, and prepared to fire.

Wang Lan stopped her.

Sun Muchen glanced sideways and could vaguely see Wang Lan's silhouette shaking her head slightly. Then she whispered, "If the enemy doesn't move, we won't move either. We don't know what that green dot is, or if it has any accomplices. Besides, it's dark, and the other side might not be able to see us. Let's not make a move unless absolutely necessary."

He simply didn't have the energy to expend any more energy.

Upon hearing this, Sun Muchen pondered for a moment, put down his bow and arrow, and said, "Brother, do you think those two dots could be living things?"

Wang Lan was taken aback, a question arising in her mind, but then she realized something and said, "That's right, you're well-read, quickly learn from..."

"Stop!"

Sun Muchen quickly interjected, "I'm not good at biology, so please don't make me analyze this. What I mean is, is it possible that we've been facing infected people or animals one after another, which has created a subconscious illusion in us, making us feel that any danger comes from infected living things?"

Wang Lan didn't reply, but her face showed a look of sudden realization, as if she understood something.

Sun Muchen continued, "For example, these two green dots. I remember reading in a book that there is a substance that decomposes from rotting corpses in the wild and burns automatically. It is called phosphorescence, and it is this eerie green color."

Wang Lan turned his head and saw that the eerie green light spots had been floating in mid-air the whole time. There was a faint green glow around the two light spots, and when they swayed gently, they would leave a faint trail of flame, which really looked a bit like burning flames.

However, at that moment, the fat man found that his legs were starting to tremble. He suddenly realized that the series of escapes from the jaws of death had accelerated the blood flow from his wounds.

Thinking of this, the fat man felt as if countless steel needles were piercing his feet.

His legs and feet were numb.

He knelt down on the ground with a "thud".

Old Zhang also lost his balance and fell down.

The sound suddenly amplified in the darkness, startling Wang Lan. He quickly turned around and heard the fat man's trembling apology, "I...I'm sorry, I really...couldn't stand up..."

The next moment, a strange howl rang out from in front of them.
