Wu Qiaoqiao and her husband struggled to survive for about 50 years in the apocalypse. In the final war of that world, the couple both died.
Unexpectedly, they got a chance to wake up again, ...
After everyone finished eating, the group wanted to stay and help Wu Qiaoqiao and the others with their chores, but Wu Qiaoqiao said that she had so many people in her family and they didn't need them. After all, they had been training all day and were tired, so she urged everyone to go back and rest. However, a few of the women stayed behind.
Liu Mingfeng then led Commander Yang and Sun Wenzhong to his study, brewed them some of his own roasted barley tea, and then came out to help.
However, after he came out, Wu Qiaoqiao sent him back. Liu Mingfeng saw that he was not needed outside, so he went in to talk to the regimental commander and political commissar about some things. When he entered the study, he saw the typewriter on the large desk. The regimental commander was holding the few sheets of paper that had been typed out, and political commissar Sun was standing to the side of regimental commander, craning his neck to look at them.
Soon, Commander Yang finished reading the papers in his hand and waved them at Liu Mingfeng, who had just entered.
"Was it written by your wife?"
When they first saw these few sheets of paper, they realized that they were actually the first few pages of a martial arts novel. After seeing these sheets, Sun Wenzhong told Commander Yang what Wu Qiaoqiao and Nie Ying had said that day. Knowing that Wu Qiaoqiao could write, he assumed that it was written by Wu Qiaoqiao.
Liu Mingfeng stepped forward, took the papers, tidied them up a bit, and put them in a box next to him. He then took out even more papers from another box and handed them to the two of them.
“Those are the ones I wrote, but this is the one my wife wrote. You all know that every time I come back from a mission, I always have to find something to do, and I always like to write something occasionally. They’ve always been left there. Now that my wife is here, she’s helping me organize them. That’s what she’s organized from what I’ve written on and off over the years.”
Commander Yang and Sun Wenzhong took the papers again and began reading. The more they read, the more they appreciated the couple's work; both wrote martial arts stories, but their styles were distinctly different. They weren't satisfied with just reading this much, so they started following Liu Mingfeng's updates. Later, every time the couple copied a novel, it would pass through Liu Mingfeng's hands before being sent out. Sometimes, when the plot ended at a crucial point, Liu Mingfeng would be pressured relentlessly, because the couple felt awkward about nagging Wu Qiaoqiao, so they would instead urge Liu Mingfeng to hurry up.
After Wu Qiaoqiao ushered Liu Mingfeng inside, she led her sisters-in-law and Feng Mingyue to tidy up. Liu Xiangjun and Liu Xiangqin, the two older children, also picked up brooms and swept the floor. When they came to two large tables that had been moved from the logistics department, they found it a bit inconvenient. Seeing this, Wu Qiaoqiao went over and carried the tables with both hands to the spot where the two children had already swept.
The women watching were dumbfounded. Later, rumors even circulated in the army that Battalion Commander Liu's wife was a super strong tigress. When Aunt Zhou and Nie Ying heard the rumors, they told the people spreading them that Qiaoqiao was actually a cultured person.
The reason Liu Mingfeng and Wu Qiaoqiao displayed these things was simply because they would be staying there for a long time. If the land allocated to them by the military wasn't cultivated for an extended period, people would inevitably gossip. So, they displayed these things so that others could cultivate the land later, and they could simply grow some vegetables to meet their daily needs. The military wives in the army knew that although Wu Qiaoqiao didn't farm, she was busy writing articles—something only educated people could do—so no one was saying anything. Although the two of them weren't afraid of what others might say, too much gossip wouldn't be good for their four children.
With the help of several military wives and Feng Mingyue, Wu Qiaoqiao quickly tidied up the yard and the pots and pans that needed washing. As for the two large tables, they could only be returned tomorrow, since it was already very late.
When the women who had helped her were about to leave, Wu Qiaoqiao gave them some leftover meat and vegetables that had been prepared in the kitchen but hadn't been eaten or cooked. After all, although there were quite a few people in her family, there was still too much left over, and they couldn't finish it all. If they didn't share it, it would spoil.
The women who helped carried the dishes home happily. They hadn't expected that just by sweeping the floor and washing the dishes, each of them would get such a big bowl of meat and vegetables. They could take these home, add some side dishes, and make another delicious dish.
After they finished cleaning up outside, Commander Yang and Sun Wenzhong came out of their study. They nodded to Wu Qiaoqiao and then went home.
Everyone woke up late the next day, as they were all exhausted from the previous day. Liu Mingfeng, however, woke up very early because he was returning to his unit that day. After getting up, Liu Mingfeng went to the army canteen and got some steamed buns and mantou (steamed bread). He planned to cook some porridge and heat it up when they woke up.
Everyone at home slept until 10 a.m., and when they woke up, they were still groggy and sat in the yard. After eating what was neither breakfast nor lunch, everyone went back to their rooms to rest. However, they couldn't fall asleep again in the afternoon, so they got up again.
After getting up, the children wrote large characters, and the adults sat there with nothing to do. Wu Qiaoqiao, however, had something to do; she needed to type some things out on the typewriter. Later, Feng Mingyue and the others got really bored, so they said goodbye to Wu Qiaoqiao, took the keys, and went to town to check out the supermarket that Wu Qiaoqiao was going to open.
Wu Qiaoqiao didn't go with them. She spent the whole afternoon in the study. When Feng Mingyue and the others returned, they told Wu Qiaoqiao about the supermarket. Everything was arranged in the supermarket, and they were just waiting to open for business. So, everyone decided to open the store tomorrow morning and prepare for business.
Since the decision to open had been made, Wu Qiaoqiao decided to inform Yang Damei when she went to the store the next day, as her supermarket had a landline.
When Liu Mingfeng returned in the evening, Wu Qiaoqiao told him about it. Liu Mingfeng asked Wu Qiaoqiao if she wanted to prepare any ceremony or anything, but Wu Qiaoqiao said it wasn't necessary. After all, she opened the supermarket to pass the time. She said that she could just set off firecrackers the next morning to remind the surrounding villagers that the supermarket was open.
