I've been a courier for over three years, delivering many bizarre packages. Now, I'm here to tell you about some little-known incidents involving the delivery of human ashes!
That day...
Feng Ling!
Last night, when I went downstairs to the front desk to ask for food, I made a phone call to Feng Ling. As the police chief, she had the authority to track me using satellite positioning. I asked her to locate my current location, then contact the hotel's higher-ups and have all communications from anyone in the hotel for 24 hours reported to the police.
In other words, the phone call I just made with the murderer had already been eavesdropped by Feng Ling. Now I just have to call Feng Ling and ask her where the other party is.
I took Xiao Bingbing downstairs to the front desk, asked for her number, and called Feng Ling. When I left Guangdong for Yunnan, she'd secretly written her number on my backpack, and I didn't even notice it at first! When I called her, Feng Ling quickly answered and asked who I was. I said it was Xu Fei, and she bluntly said, "For your sake, I risked being severely scolded by my superiors and helped you behind their backs. Before I tell you the outcome, you have to give me an explanation. What are you doing? Are you trying to stalk a girl? Are you a sex maniac?"
A sex… maniac? Oh my god, is there any need to think of me as that? But come to think of it, I didn't tell Feng Ling that I was investigating the killer in the Death Game because I knew that if I told Feng Ling, she'd most likely be murdered. So I just made up a lie and said, "Here's the thing. I came to Yunnan to look for my friend, but she seems to have been kidnapped and disappeared. I couldn't contact her until yesterday, when she called me with strange phone calls and said a bunch of weird things. I suspect she's been kidnapped, so I asked you to help me locate her..."
Feng Ling said with a smile: "Are you lying to a three-year-old girl? I think what you are saying now is very strange. It makes me suspect that you have been kidnapped."
I was speechless. How could a man of my stature be kidnapped so easily? She smiled and said, "Anyway, I'm glad you came to me for help. The target is not far from your hotel, also in Lijiang, about 2 kilometers away. You can take a taxi there. It's called the July Half Apartment, Room 606."
I thanked him briefly, hung up, and walked Xiao Bingbing down the street, catching a taxi to what Feng Ling called "the July 15th Apartment." Fei Baijiang was tied to my back like a toy puppet. His thick skin made him perfect for use as a shield, so I had to take him with me!
Xiao Bingbing asked me where I was going, and I said I was going to find the murderer. She was a little skeptical. If the murderer could be found so easily, that would be too lame. Of course, I thought so too. However, since the positioning signal was coming from there, there must be something there. Otherwise, it would be too weird!
So, I had to go check it out no matter what.
It was a quick 2-kilometer taxi ride. I paid, got out, and walked to the apartment entrance. The manager, a grim-faced woman, asked if I was renting an apartment. I shook my head and said no, I was looking for someone in room 606.
The auntie in the apartment had a cold face and looked very fierce. But when she heard that I was looking for "No. 606", her eyes changed slightly: "There is no tenant in No. 606!" Then she turned and left.
I was stunned for a moment, then quickly chased after her: "Auntie, I'll just go up and take a look. I won't disturb you!"
The apartment lady turned around and looked at me, then looked at Xiao Bingbing who was following behind me, and then said expressionlessly: "You can go up, but this apartment is not responsible for anything that happens."
I said yes, and the apartment lady told me to follow her. We followed her up the stairs. As we passed the corner of the corridor between the fifth and sixth floors, a chilling chill hit us. I was frustrated. Why take the stairs when the elevator was working? Was the elevator broken?
Just when I thought of this, the auntie suddenly stopped moving. I looked forward and saw that she had arrived at 606. The auntie took out a big bunch of keys, locked and opened the door, turned around and said, "You can go in by yourselves." Then she walked downstairs.
After I watched her disappear into the corridor, I said to Xiao Bingbing, "The murderer is very likely in there. You have to be mentally prepared."
Xiao Bingbing tensed up and nodded.
So, we walked into the apartment's living room. The light inside was a little dim, so I touched the button on the wall and turned on the light, allowing me to see clearly inside. But there was nothing strange about it. The furniture and appliances were neatly arranged, the curtains were drawn, and the atmosphere was very quiet.
"Why is there no one here?" Xiao Bingbing looked around in confusion.
I found it strange, too. If no one was there, what was calling me? Could it be a ghost? I scanned the area with my Wisdom Eyes, but couldn't find any trace of a ghost. So, there were only two possibilities: one, perhaps Feng Ling misplaced the location and gave me the wrong one; the other, perhaps the murderer had anticipated being tracked and fled beforehand?
Putting aside whether Feng Ling made a positioning error, if the murderer had escaped beforehand, why was the entire living room and several large and small rooms inside so clean and tidy, with no signs of having been turned over at all? Instead, it felt like no one had lived there for a long time, and at most someone had come in to clean.
In other words, the second possibility does not exist. Then, Feng Ling must have made a mistake in positioning.
Xiao Bingbing and I returned to the apartment building and found the old lady. I asked her how long had apartment 606 been vacant? The old lady said with a sullen face, "About three months."
Three months? I frowned. This apartment is located on a busy street, where every inch of land is valuable. Nearby are bus stops, restaurants, supermarkets, KTVs, bars, and other convenient and lively places. It should be very crowded, perhaps even fully occupied. But how could this room be left empty for three months?
