Chapter 97 The Death of Li Wei

There are too many zombies; they keep coming from all directions, and you can't kill them all.

Li Wei and his group of eight were instantly separated by the horde of zombies.

"Back to back! Don't spread out!" Li Wei roared, his metal superpower conjuring several throwing knives that pierced the heads of several zombies, but more immediately pounced on them.

A fire-type ability user desperately spewed fire, scorching a patch in front of him and billowing black smoke. But two fast zombies from his side and rear seized the opportunity to pounce, tearing his combat suit with their claws. The smell of blood fueled even more zombies into a frenzy.

"Ah! Help me!" he screamed.

A nearby earth-type ability user tried to use an earthen wall to create a barrier, but it was only halfway up when it was smashed down by several powerful zombies, sending debris flying everywhere.

"Captain! We can't hold on any longer!"

"Get back to the vehicle! Quickly!"

Li Wei's face was ashen. Metal around him transformed into sharp, spinning blades, shredding the approaching zombies as he desperately tried to carve a bloody path. But the zombies surged forward relentlessly, giving him no chance to catch his breath.

On the other side, the strength-type superhuman had just smashed the head of a zombie when three zombies grabbed his arms and legs at the same time, biting him with their foul-smelling mouths. He struggled fiercely, unleashing his superpowers to shake them off, but he already had several bloody cuts on his body.

"Medicine! Antidote!" someone shouted.

In the chaos, there was no time to grab anything. One team member was completely dragged down by the horde of zombies; his screams were drowned out by the roars, and he soon fell silent.

Li Wei's eyes were red. He looked towards Ruan Ning's side and saw the three of them and a dog leaning against the SUV, surrounded by a strange vacuum. The zombies were clearly roaring in that direction, but they seemed to be blocked by an invisible wall, only going around them and then rushing towards them.

"It's a mental barrier!" Li Wei gritted his teeth; he finally understood how vast the difference in strength was. His opponent could not only lure monsters, but also precisely control them to keep them away from him.

"Charge! Break through their barrier!" Li Wei roared, unleashing his full metal power, transforming into a metal storm that shredded the zombies in front of him as he charged towards Ruan Ning. He knew that if they didn't deal with Ruan Ning, they would all die here.

However, he had only taken a few steps when the ground beneath his feet suddenly became muddy and slippery—Ruan Ning glanced at him from afar, and the residual sewage on the ground and the moisture in the air were instantly drawn together, forming a slippery swamp.

Li Wei slipped, disrupting the rhythm of the metal storm. Several zombies seized the opportunity to pounce!

"Captain, watch out!" A wind-type team member managed to blow away a few of them, but he himself got his back scratched.

Li Wei steadied himself, his body protected by metal shields that clanged against the zombies' claws and bites, but his face was deathly pale. Of the eight men he had brought, three had already fallen in just a few minutes, and the rest were all wounded, surrounded by the horde of zombies and unable to move an inch.

Meanwhile, on Ruan Ning's side, Zhou Min and Lin Yan only needed to occasionally take care of one or two zombies that accidentally got too close to escape the net, while Da Huo sat leisurely, only growling at the zombies that rushed towards the barrier to intimidate them.

"Break through! Get in the car! Go!" he roared hoarsely, his metal superpowers erupting wildly, condensing dozens of high-speed spinning flying blades without regard for consumption, forcefully clearing a brief bloody path in front of himself and the nearest team members.

"Let's go!" He shoved the injured fire-type team member next to him.

The four remaining able-bodied men scrambled towards their two SUVs. Three of their companions' corpses lay on the ground, being devoured by zombies.

An earth-elemental team member desperately raised earthen walls behind him in an attempt to block the pursuers, but the walls were pushed down and collapsed by the horde of zombies as soon as they were raised.

"Quick! Drive!"

Li Wei was the first to rush to the car, open the door, and the metal blades were still slashing at the zombies that pounced on him. Another wind-elemental team member followed him inside.

The other two rushed towards another car. Just as one of them opened the door, a zombie hiding under the car lunged out and bit his calf!

"Ah—!" he screamed as he was dragged to the ground and instantly overwhelmed by several zombies.

The last team member was so terrified that he frantically pulled open the car door and started the engine.

Li Wei's car started up, the tires screeching against the ground. He reversed abruptly, knocking several zombies away, then turned and sped off towards the highway outside the county. Another car followed closely behind.

Like stray dogs, the two vehicles crashed through the zombies and sped out of the county town.

Inside the car, Li Wei was panting heavily, his face splattered with blood—he couldn't tell if it was his own or his comrade's. He glanced at the rearview mirror; another car had followed, but the driver was deathly pale, clearly terrified.

"Did you shake them off?" asked the wind-element teammate next to him, still shaken.

Just as Li Wei was about to speak, his pupils suddenly contracted sharply.

In the rearview mirror, a gray shadow darted out of the roadside woods like a ghost! It was incredibly fast, running on all fours with contorted but swift movements, rapidly approaching the car behind!

It's a second-tier speed-type zombie!

"Watch out behind you!" Li Wei shouted into the communicator.

The team members in the car behind also saw it in their rearview mirror and were so frightened that they swerved to avoid it. But the speed zombie was too fast; it leaped forward like a cheetah hunting its prey and slammed into the side and rear of the car!

With a loud crash, the car was jolted and nearly overturned.

The speed-type zombie's sharp claws gripped the edge of the car window, its rotting face pressed against the glass, frantically scratching and ramming. The team members inside screamed in terror, and the car swerved in an S-shape on the road.

Li Wei gritted his teeth and tried to slow down to help.

But then, something even more despairing happened. From the direction of the county town, the dark horde of corpses, like a pack of hyenas attracted by the scent of blood, actually came chasing after them! Although their speed varied, that gray-black wave was spreading along the road in the direction they had fled!

"Damn it!" Li Wei's face turned deathly pale. He knew he couldn't stop. If they were surrounded by the horde of zombies again, they would surely die.

The team members in the car behind also saw the approaching horde of zombies and completely panicked. He slammed on the gas, the car wobbling as it accelerated, trying to shake off the speeding zombies clinging to it, but in his panic, the tires ran over a piece of gravel, and the car lurched violently!

With that jolt, the speed zombie seized the opportunity, smashing the passenger-side window with a claw and reaching its rotting arm inside!

"Ah—!" A bloodcurdling scream came from inside the car.

The car went completely out of control, crashing into a dead tree by the roadside and coming to a stop. The speed zombies and several ordinary zombies that had caught up from behind instantly engulfed the car. The screams quickly faded, leaving only the grating gnawing sounds and the shattering of glass.

When Li Wei saw this scene in the rearview mirror, his heart felt like it had been drenched in ice water. He gritted his teeth and floored the accelerator, wanting nothing more than to get as far away from this hell as possible.

However, the horde of zombies did not give up. The faster zombies, especially a few mutated ones, were still relentlessly pursuing them, and the distance was closing! Even more terrifying, at the bend in the road ahead, it seemed that a scattered group of zombies had been attracted by the commotion and staggered out, blocking the way.

There were obstacles blocking their way ahead and pursuers behind.

Li Wei had to slow down, constantly firing metal blades to clear obstacles ahead, but the efficiency was decreasing. The wind-elemental teammate beside him was also desperately activating his wind blades, but both of them were at their limit, their abilities nearing depletion.

"Captain! I can't go on..." The wind-elemental team member looked ashen.

Li Wei didn't say anything, just drove with red eyes. He knew there was no escape.

The car was finally jolted to a stop by several zombies that pounced from the farmland beside it. Immediately afterward, more zombies rushed forward, frantically pounding on the car body and windows.

"Fight them!" Li Wei roared, pulling open the car door. His metal-based superpowers erupted one last time, transforming into countless fine needles that shot outwards. The wind-type team members also staggered out of the car, unleashing their last few weak wind blades.

But there were too many zombies. They were swallowed up in an instant.

The sounds of metal clashing, wind blades whistling, and human roars and screams were quickly drowned out by the excited howls of zombies and the sounds of flesh being torn apart.

After a final, abrupt groan, only two wrecked cars remained on the road, along with a horde of zombies engrossed in their meal, emitting satisfied groans. The main horde of zombies had slowly spread to this place, turning it into a new feast for the dead.
