Chapter 393 Sending a Thank-You Letter

On the way back, there were more villagers on the oxcart than on the way to the county town.

Many villagers would set off early in the morning to queue up at the supply and marketing cooperative to buy goods during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival. After buying the goods, some would still walk home, while others would choose to take an oxcart home.

Two women from the same village, who had brought their children, bought melon seeds and candy. They were happy because the children were quite greedy and they wanted to give them some to eat on the way.

The rural dirt roads were bumpy and uneven, causing the car to jolt along. Halfway there, a five or six-year-old boy who was lying in his grandmother's arms eating candy suddenly started breathing rapidly.

When Luo Jingyan noticed him, she saw that his face was bluish-purple, he was having difficulty breathing, and his mouth was open as if he wanted to cough but couldn't, looking very uncomfortable.

His grandmother, Aunt Jin, patted his chest forcefully: "Shuanzi, did you choke? Please be careful, nothing bad will happen to you. Grandma will pat your chest to help you feel better. Oh, I knew I shouldn't have let you eat candy in the car."

But after she patted Xiao Shuanzi's chest several times, Xiao Shuanzi not only did not get better, but became even more uncomfortable.

Someone in the car blurted out, "The child has something stuck in his throat. You can just use your hand to clear it out."

Aunt Jin quickly tried to gag Xiao Shuanzi's throat, but it didn't work.

"Pick him up and squat down as hard as you can, and he'll be down."

Grandpa Zhang had already stopped the car, and Aunt Jin was about to pick up Xiao Shuanzi and shake his body a few times to let the thing stuck in his throat slide down his esophagus.

The bus was crowded and noisy. Luo Jingyan then realized that Xiao Shuanzi's symptoms were not food stuck in his throat, but rather very likely food stuck in his trachea.

She stood up to stop Aunt Jin: "Auntie, please don't squat like that on the child. The food in his mouth isn't stuck in his esophagus, it's stuck in his trachea. If you squat like that, the food will slide deeper and deeper down his trachea, and it could kill the child."

Aunt Jin panicked even more upon hearing this and asked Luo Jingyan, "Girl, how did you know?"

“Auntie, if the child had food stuck in his esophagus, he would have swallowed it by himself long ago and wouldn’t have difficulty breathing. He clearly has a problem with his trachea, which is why he’s having trouble breathing.”

Aunt Jin was at a loss for what to do. She was in a situation where she was confused and didn't know what to do.

However, the people around her were divided into two camps. One camp believed that the child's food was stuck in his esophagus, and that patting his chest and squatting down to help the food move down would solve the problem.

Some found Luo Jingyan's words novel and reasonable, and agreed with her. Others, however, were confused and remained bewildered.

Luo Jingyan said, "Aunt Jin, the child is in great pain right now. His life is at stake. I do know a first aid method. If you trust me, let me help him expel the stuff from his trachea. If it gets any later, his life may be in danger."

Aunt Jin felt that Luo Jingyan wouldn't joke about the child's life, so she agreed.

Although some others didn't believe Luo Jingyan, they didn't dare to speak carelessly about matters of life and death. Otherwise, if something really happened to the child, none of them could bear the responsibility. On the contrary, if Luo Jingyan insisted on taking the lead and caused a death, it would be Luo Jingyan's own trouble. As bystanders, they could just quietly watch the show.

Luo Jingyan took the child from Aunt Jin's arms, turned him around so his back was to her, bent down, and tightly wrapped her arms around Xiao Shuanzi's chest, squeezing hard. In just two squeezes, the fruit candy stuck in Xiao Shuanzi's trachea was expelled, and he could breathe again. He gasped for fresh air and gradually returned to normal. Aunt Jin finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Perhaps because he had been in so much pain, now that he could breathe freely, he suddenly threw himself into Aunt Jin's arms and started crying.

"Waaaaah, Grandma, I felt so awful just now. I thought I was going to die."

Aunt Jin had tears on her face, some from fright and some from joy at her child's narrow escape.

She patted Xiao Shuanzi's back to comfort him, "It's alright, it's alright, it was Sister Luo who saved you."

Xiao Shuanzi turned his head to look at Luo Jingyan, and Aunt Jin said, "Sister saved you, quickly thank sister."

Xiao Shuanzi nodded to Luo Jingyan: "Thank you, sister."

"You're welcome." Luo Jingyan was happy that she had saved a life.

Grandma Xue was stunned to see her granddaughter-in-law save someone in an emergency.

She already thought her granddaughter-in-law was good enough—she was beautiful, could cook delicious meals, and was skilled in martial arts. But today, she was truly amazed.

She wondered what other skills her granddaughter-in-law possessed that she hadn't seen before.

What a wonderful granddaughter-in-law!

After the incident subsided, everyone boarded the oxcart and continued their journey back to the village.

Aunt Jin took out a bag of fruit candies and gave it to Luo Jingyan.

"Girl, you saved my grandson's life. I don't have anything good to give you right now, so take these candies to sweeten your mouth. When we get home, we'll go to your house to thank you."

Luo Jingyan waved her hand: "No need, Auntie. You're being too polite. Ever since I came to our Shengli Brigade, I've considered myself a member of this team. You're all my family. I'm just helping my family, why should I ask for thanks?"

Everyone on the bus praised Luo Jingyan for her sweet talk and skill, and also admired her abilities.

Not only is he a brewing technician, but he can also drive a tractor and save lives in ways they don't know.
