Looking back in my twilight years, I have no regrets.
Shen Jifang is a centenarian with a full head of white hair and her face etched with the wrinkles of time, yet she remains remarkably spry. She has long since handed over the management of "Cheng'an Hall" entirely to her apprentices, while she herself remains in her courtyard in Jiangnan, enjoying her twilight years. Every morning, she takes a leisurely stroll in the courtyard, gazing at every blade of grass and tree, reminiscing about the past.
She recalled her grandparents, Shen Qingci and Su Yunqing, supporting each other in Ningguta and cherishing each other after returning to Jiangnan; she recalled her parents, Shen Chengyou and Wang Ruoxi, during the war-torn years on the border and their tender companionship after retiring to Jiangnan; she recalled her brother, Shen Jiye, being brave and fearless on the battlefield and leading the way in disaster relief in the south; she recalled her nephew, Shen Nian'an, being upright and outspoken in the court and his pure heart for the people; and she also recalled every detail of her life as a doctor, saving lives and healing the wounded.
Her life, though lacking any earth-shattering feats, was fulfilling and meaningful. She used her medical skills to help countless people, alleviating their suffering; she warmed everyone around her with her kindness and gentleness, upholding the Shen family's traditions. She never regretted her choices, because she knew that everything she did was in accordance with the teachings of her ancestors, contributing her own strength to the country and its people.
On this day, Shen Nian'an, along with her son Shen Chengze and grandson Shen Jiayan, returned to Jiangnan to visit her aunt. Shen Nian'an was already over seventy years old and had some difficulty walking. Shen Chengze also had a full head of white hair. Only Shen Jiayan was in his prime, with an upright posture and high spirits.
When Shen Jifang saw them, a relieved smile appeared on her face, and she quickly went to greet them: "Nian'an, Chengze, Jiayan, you're finally back!"
Shen Jiayan quickly stepped forward and helped Shen Jifang up: "Grandma, how are you? Your grandson misses you so much."
Shen Jifang patted his hand: "Good, good, your aunt is in good health. Come in and sit down, I've brewed some pre-Qingming Longjing tea for you."
The family sat around a stone bench in the courtyard. Shen Jifang looked at her children and grandchildren with deep emotion: "Our Shen family, generation after generation, has been doing its part for the country and its people. From your great-great-grandfather Shen Qing resigning from the imperial examination to serve the country, to your grandfather Shen Jiye guarding the border, to your father Shen Chengze assisting the government, and now you have become a pillar of the court. Your great-aunt is so proud of you all."
Shen Nian'an held her aunt's hand: "Aunt, you have sacrificed so much for our Shen family. Your medical skills, your kindness, and your perseverance are all role models for us to learn from. If it weren't for your unwavering commitment to the Shen family's traditions and the teachings of our ancestors, we wouldn't have achieved what we have today."
Shen Jiayan also said, "Grandma, I have always kept the stories of our ancestors that you told me in my heart. I will definitely take our ancestors as my role models, stay true to my original aspirations, live up to the expectations of my family and country, and do more for the country and its people."
Shen Jifang nodded, her eyes full of relief: "Good, good, with your words, I can rest assured. In my life, I have no regrets as I have seen you all succeed and as I have seen the Great Jing Kingdom live in peace and prosperity."
As the sun set, golden sunlight streamed into the courtyard, casting long shadows of the family. Shen Jifang gazed into the distance, a contented smile on her face. Looking back in her twilight years, she had no regrets—this was the best summary of her life.
