The St. Williams Metropolitan Cathedral is indeed a Christian church, so although it looks much larger than the Catholic Church in San Fernando from the outside, its interior decoration is much simpler than that Catholic Church.

After all, due to the differences in doctrine, there are huge differences in the interior decoration of Catholic churches and Christian churches.

But no matter what, Catholicism and Christianity, that is, Protestantism, both belong to Christianity. It’s just that in China, due to translation, Protestantism is called "Christianity". In fact, the correct name for Catholicism should be "Roman Catholicism". As for the other one of the three major Christian sects, it is Eastern Orthodoxy.

In fact, the difference between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism can be distinguished from the decoration inside the church. The interior decoration of Roman Catholic churches is mostly magnificent, whether it is the walls, glass or dome, there are paintings everywhere.

In contrast, the interior decoration of Protestant churches is much simpler. It is said that this is because they are worried that believers will be distracted by the gorgeous decoration inside the church and unable to believe in Christ Jesus wholeheartedly, so they make the interior decoration of the church very simple.

Additionally, the person in charge of a Catholic church is usually called a priest, while the person in charge of a Protestant church is usually called a pastor.

However, these two types of churches also have something in common, that is, they have tombs related to the churches.

Whether it is Catholic or Protestant, there are generally three types of relationships between churches and tombs. The first type is that the cemetery is outside the church, the second type is that the tomb is in the basement under the church, and the third type is that the coffin is placed directly on the floor of the church.

The first type of tombs are mostly used to bury ordinary believers; the second type of tombs are mostly used to bury important believers; as for the third type, where the coffin is placed directly on the church floor, only extremely important figures who have made great contributions to the church can enjoy this high honor after their death.

Of course, not all churches have crypts. Some churches that were built very early could not build crypts under the church due to the limitations of construction technology or local conditions at the time. For example, the Catholic Church in San Fernando is such a case.

As for the St. Williams Metropolitan Cathedral, because it was built in only about a century, construction technology was no longer a problem, so there is a large and deep underground crypt under the cathedral, which has three floors and is nearly ten meters deep.

Even Yang Jing, after entering the underground crypt of the cathedral, could not help but be a little surprised by the grandeur of the cathedral. You know, this cathedral was built around 1900. It is a miracle that such a huge three-story basement could be built more than a hundred years ago. Moreover, the Philippines is a country with many earthquakes. For more than a hundred years, this cathedral has been able to remain intact.

There is still a big gap between Western and Eastern thinking. For example, their views on cemeteries are completely different.

In the minds of Oriental people, especially Chinese people, the more remote the cemetery is, the better. There is a difference between yin and yang, and the living cannot be too close to the dead, otherwise something bad will happen.

In the eyes of Westerners, cemeteries are sacred places, and most Westerners build their homes near cemeteries in order to receive blessings from their ancestors. In churches, tombs are even built directly under the church floor.

Although Yang Jing did not believe in ghosts and gods, he grew up in China and had heard many stories about ghosts and gods. Even though he did not believe in gods anymore, he could not help but feel his hair stand on end when he suddenly entered this gloomy underground tomb.

The basement is made of brick and stone structure, with arches formed between the thick brick and stone columns. These densely packed arches are responsible for supporting the weight of the building above. The four walls of the basement are not made of cement as Yang Jing imagined, but are also brick and stone walls.

This made Yang Jing feel very strange. The cathedral itself was located by the river, and the groundwater level should be very high. If a basement was built in such a place without proper waterproofing, the basement would have been submerged by the bubbling groundwater long ago.

But there was nothing wrong here. Even in the third basement which was more than ten meters underground, apart from feeling very damp and cold, there was no water stain in the basement.
