Song Yan never thought she would experience a day of transmigrating into a book. Well, if she transmigrated, she transmigrated! The 1970s weren't that scary.
However, she didn't expec...
"Second Sister-in-law, I think I heard someone's voice." Chang Xiaohu's voice trembled slightly. "It sounds like Second Brother Zhuang's voice."
Chang Xiaohu's hearing is extraordinary; when he hears a voice, he's almost certain it's someone. "Are you sure it's your Second Brother Zhuang's voice?"
“I can identify a person just by listening to their voice, and I rarely make mistakes,” Chang Xiaohu said confidently.
Song Yan: "Listen more carefully!"
"At least four people encountered a pack of wolves. There seemed to be many wolves."
"Bang! Bang!" Two gunshots rang out. Song Yan and Aunt Wei both heard them.
"I heard someone shout 'Erzhuang!' He's been bitten by a wolf..."
Song Yan: "Can you tell how far it is?"
"I haven't tried it. But it must be at least three miles away!" Chang Xiaohu wasn't sure.
Song Yan wanted to go see him, but without Chang Xiaohu, it would be difficult for her to find someone. But what about her mother-in-law?
Aunt Wei immediately guessed Song Yan's thoughts: "Are you confident? Your marksmanship isn't good enough, can you drive away the wolves?" The old woman held onto Song Yan tightly, refusing to let go.
“I can do it. Start a fire, Xiao Hu, start a fire quickly! Get the sacks from the cart, they're full of wheat straw!” Song Yan said as he pulled out a machete from the basket and disappeared into the darkness.
Song Yan turned on her flashlight and haphazardly chopped at the straw. When she dumped the straw out, she dragged out quite a few branches. She couldn't possibly be that fast; they were all from her spatial storage.
With the wheat straw, the fire quickly grew larger. Aunt Wei and Chang Xiaohu added more firewood. There was snow on the ground; if the fire wasn't strong enough, the melting snow would extinguish it.
Only a large bonfire can frighten wild animals.
Chang Xiaohu threw the tree branch beside him into the fire, and when he turned around, there was a pile of tree branches as thick as an arm behind him.
The bonfire was so hot that people retreated.
"Second Sister-in-law, another one of them has been bitten by wolves." Chang Xiaohu had been listening intently to the sounds coming from the other side.
“Mom, take the machete. Xiao Hu has very good hearing. He can hear you as soon as you call out.” Song Yan put the machete into her mother-in-law’s hand.
Aunt Wei grabbed Song Yan, "No one is more important than yourself. If things get bad, come back quickly. We can stay by the fire and nothing might happen."
"I know."
Aunt Wei didn't want to let go; the wolf pack wasn't so easy to deal with.
Chang Xiaohu was very anxious, probably because he had heard that the situation was very bad.
"Mom, call me if you need anything," Song Yan instructed again before pulling Chang Xiaohu into the woods.
Shining a flashlight on himself, Song Yan then pulled out a machete and swung it at the tree branches blocking his way...
The snow was above knee-deep, and with the branches and withered grass, Chang Xiaohu had some difficulty walking. Song Yan, on the other hand, was much more agile…
I saw them! Pairs of creatures, some blue, some green, lurking in the dark forest, accompanied by howls that sent chills down my spine. I'd estimate around twenty!
Old Zeng said that the guns used by the militia now are outdated and have a short range.
Song Yan shoved the flashlight and machete into Chang Xiaohu's hands, "Climb the tree!"
"Second Sister-in-law!" How could Chang Xiaohu climb the tree himself and throw his second sister-in-law down?
"I won't be able to take care of you for a while. I can climb trees too. If I'm in danger, I'll climb a tree. Hurry up!" As he spoke, Song Yan left Chang Xiaohu behind.
Without Chang Xiaohu, Song Yan wouldn't have been able to find the person so quickly; Song Yan had been constantly accommodating Chang Xiaohu's pace. Now, Chang Xiaohu can't even keep up.
After leaving Chang Xiaohu, Song Yan quickly advanced a short distance and entered her spatial dimension. She threw away any unnecessary items she had on her person. She wasn't a sharpshooter; only by controlling the bullets with her mind within the spatial dimension could she achieve perfect accuracy.
However, there were no gunshots inside the space. Song Yan fired one shot outside and another shot inside the space.
Chang Xiaohu and the people being attacked all heard the gunshots, and a wolf fell down.
"Get down! I don't want to hurt you all!" Song Yan shouted.
Then, gunshots rang out continuously. Two wolves fell, then three, then four.
Wolves are also very intelligent animals; when they detect a threat, they move closer to Song Yan's location.
The gunshots continued, and the wolves continued to fall.
Everything took place in the dark. Song Yan fired two shots by instinct. A pair of blue eyes lowered, and Song Yan guessed that a horse had fallen down.
Song Yan entered the space, fixed his eyes on a pair of glowing eyes, fired a shot, and then fired two more shots in the same manner.
The group of people in the woods thought they were sure to be devoured by wolves that night, but they never expected to escape their predicament.
The joy of escaping death made them forget how many shots Song Yan had fired.
Since the wolf pack showed no intention of closing in on Song Yan, Song Yan stopped firing.
Wolves are indeed intelligent animals; when faced with a formidable enemy, they quickly showed signs of retreat and stopped trying to approach Song Yan.
A wolf howled...
Song Yan was also very nervous, wondering if the wolf was calling for more of its companions.
The wolf pack slowly retreated...
"Little Tiger, come here!" Song Yan called out, then slowly walked forward, waiting for Little Tiger to catch up...
Xiao Hu turned on his flashlight and walked forward with Song Yan...
"We're here, we're here..."
Chang Xiaohu: "It's the sound of a pot turning yellow..."
A pot of yellow? Song Yan took a moment to realize it was Wang Zhuzi…
"Song Zhiqing?"
"Brother, sister-in-law!"
With such accurate marksmanship, no one would have guessed it was Song Yan.
Wei Erzhuang, Wang Zhuzi, Chen Xiaodong's cousin Chen Xiaobei, Liu Sanzi, and one other person I don't recognize. Five people in total.
Wei Erzhuang: "He is Sun Zheng from the Hexi Brigade."
The common trait among the people in Qingshan Brigade was that they were poor.
When Wu Xiuyun handed over the bill, she was short 10 yuan, but she later paid the difference herself.
